Deck the Halls!

We must admit: when someone says “festive”, everyone at Starbright Floral Design in NYC thinks FLOWERS! Yet we realize that for some, the holiday season might not be the time that they think of how floral blooms can enhance their cheerful decor — that’s why we wanted to share how we brighten up Manhattan, each and every December.

We’d love to help make your winter a fun and festive season!

Many of our clients used to be addicted to poinsettia plants this time of year, and we understand why. With their ubiquitous presence all throughout New York City, poinsettias are an easy flower to reach for if you aren’t aware of more decadent options. But, rest easy in knowing that the brilliant floral designers at Starbright Floral Design have a few tricks up their sleeves to transform NYC spaces from ho-hum to Ho! Ho! Ho!

One flower that we love to incorporate into holiday decor is the amaryllis. Stunning on their own, these tall flowers add excitement and drama to any setting in New York City. Coming in an array of reds, from fire engine to burgundy, the amaryllis flowers seems like they were custom made for Christmas, with even a candy cane option of red and white striped available from your favorite local NYC florist!

Stately amaryllis brings heightened elegance to holiday decor.

Hydrangeas, roses and carnations also provide fantastic floral canvases for the holidays in NYC. Especially when grouped with their own but in differing hues, these flowers add that floral decadence that many are looking for in Manhattan. In particular, we love to see lush red roses paired with crisp white roses, that leave many dreaming of a gorgeous Christmas.

Vibrant red roses combined with rich greens and berries creates a lush holiday centerpiece.

With their abundance of blooms, hydrangeas are a wonderful flower to chose to deck your halls. With their incredible selection of colors, including silvers mixed with reds or deep purples, Starbright floral designers have found that these flowers prove to be the life of any party in New York City.

Of course, there are more unusual options available as well for your festive floral decor. Ilex berries in particular have an excellent combination of rich red berries on soaring stems that add elegance to every space in Manhattan and beyond. Starbright’s designers love to feature them standing proudly in a vase to maximize their visual impact.

Eye-catching berries take center stage with soft succulents enhancing the differing textures.

Then there is one of our favorite blooms, classic white lilies. These flowers last a long time, have a lovely scent and mix perfectly with red flowers, like roses or carnations, for a joyous holiday feel. We think that white lilies are one of the most lovely flowers to use at any time of year, but their snowy white petals match the festivity in the air in New York City!

One the things about this season that we at Starbright love is how flowers can capture so many emotions and highlight the beauty of winter. If you’re thinking that some stunning floral bouquets might add that extra bit of holiday magic into your decor in NYC, we’d love to be of assistance and help make your days be extra merry and bright!

Have a Starbright-ful Thanksgiving!

Everyone at Starbright Floral Design is always thankful our clients are our friends and our days are filled with flowers. We love what we do in New York City and are so passionate about floral design because we know our work brings smiles to others. And that’s our favorite thing!

In preparation of this Thanksgiving, we’ve been cooking up a floral feast for your senses. If you’re still looking for a bit of inspiration for a centerpiece filled with flowers, we have some ideas for you and would be delighted to deliver any and all of these incredible floral compositions to you in NYC and beyond!

Cornucopias, also know as “horns of plenty”, can trace their origins back to classical antiquity. But here in New York City and all throughout America, these time-honored creations are ubiquitous at Thanksgiving. Of course, the version that Starbright’s visionary designers crafted is abounding with flowers, and we would hope that you’d want it no other way!

Starbright took special care to ensure that the best of autumn’s colors shined in this gorgeous floral composition.
Starbright took special care to ensure that the best of autumn’s colors shined in this gorgeous floral composition.

Filled with sunflowers, roses and additional flowers like calla lilies, we think that our Cornucopias bring a sense of bounty to any gathering. Perfect as a centerpiece or as a statement elsewhere in your home or business in NYC, Cornucopias evoke a sense of welcoming community through their rich composition and lush abundance.

In the spirit of welcoming everyone for a feast, we have also been busy crafting autumnal wreathes, bedecked in flowers. Lovely as an accent on a front door inside or outside in New York City, our wreaths are created to please the eye as much as your Thanksgiving meal will excite the palate.

Wreaths by Starbright bring together corn and wheat to evoke of the harvest.

Of course, there is nothing more apropos than a turkey for Thanksgiving anywhere in New York City and beyond. We wanted to build a floral delight that would last long after the Thanksgiving meal had been devoured and thought a faux turkey would be just the thing to brighten everyone’s day.

A Thanksgiving turkey…the Starbright way!
A Thanksgiving turkey…the Starbright way!

Made with fresh foliage and flowers with a base of fresh, rust toned chrysanthemums, this turkey has been certified as cruelty-free. It’s a great addition for every Thanksgiving celebration, near in NYC or far, that wants to add a bit of whimsy through floral décor.

We know some of our beloved friends don’t adore the cold in New York City and wish that they were someplace warmer for the holidays. It was with them in mind that we created our Tropical Thanksgiving masterpiece.

Calla lilies and mosses beflower our tropical coconuts.
Calla lilies and mosses beflower our tropical coconuts.

Built out of coconuts and adorned with flowers and mosses, our Tropical Thanksgiving is a great gift for a host who wishes that they were celebrating someplace warmer. We were delighted to be asked to create something that would remind the recipient more of Bermuda than NYC and think that the russet calla lilies pay tribute to our turkiest of holidays.

If you’re just realizing that although you have your menu planned out but maybe not the flowers to adorn your Thanksgiving table, give us a ring! We’ll make sure that just the right composition arrives safely at your door…before your guests! Here’s to a wonderful Thanksgiving, filled with laughter and love. Happy Thanksgiving, from all of us at Starbright.

Starbright’s Philanthropic Gifts to NYC

At Starbright Floral Design, we understand just how much a gorgeous bouquet of tenderly curated flowers can brighten someone’s day. That’s why we take great pride in being a part of incredible charitable events in New York City throughout the year. In the last week, we were fortunate to be invited to adorn two different spaces with that special Starbright magic and we wanted to share our floral vision with you!

Starbright Adorns the Parent-Child Home Program

Everyone at Starbright Floral Design was thrilled to lend a hand to help celebrate the Parent-Child Home Program’s annual Literacy Champions Gala at the Mandarin Oriental in New York City. The Parent-Child Home Program helps our communities in NYC by providing under-resourced families with the necessary skills and tools to help their children thrive in school and in life.

The event was organized to support the organization expand into more communities within New York City and Starbright happily donated flowers to adorn the space for the Parent-Child Home Program so that more funds could be raised without this outstanding non-profit incurring an expense for the décor.

Over 300 people were in attendance at this fantastic event and Starbright’s imaginative floral designers wanted to WOW every person. To do that, we wove white roses with snow colored hydrangea and calla lilies to create a stunning first impression at the step-and-repeat wall at the entrance to the event. The roses and hydrangea were used again to create low, lush centerpieces for the tables, which allowed for spirited conversations with the soft scent of beauty in the air.

Starbright's stunning arrangements welcomed everyone to the Parent-Child Home Program.

The Parent-Child Home Program helps underserved children in NYC be school-ready by having intensive home visits with them and bringing a weekly gift of books and educational materials. They do such incredible work for NYC and Starbright was delighted to play a part in ensuring a brighter future for our youth through our support and donation.

The lovely centerpieces echoed the floral compositions at the entrance.

Starbright Sponsors the Drama League of New York’s Fundraiser

During the same week, the Drama League of New York invited us to be a sponsor for their Musical Celebration of Broadway Honoring David Hyde Pierce at the historical Plaza Hotel in NYC and we were elated to accept.

Since 1916, the Drama League of New York has been at the forefront of the American Theater community, as they provide talent, audience and prosperous support. As one of the nation’s oldest continuously-operating, not-for-profit arts advocacy and education organizations, Starbright was only too happy to contribute by donating fresh blooms for the Drama League to enliven the atmosphere for their event.

The sumptuous black-tie gala in New York City entertained 300 guests and raised over $765,000 — a fundraising record! All funds will support the educational training programs of The Drama League Directors Project and the dazzling flowers Starbright provided were taken home by the guests so they could continue to relish in the floral glory.

The lavish flowers celebrated the Drama League's spectacular evening.

Through its programs, initiatives and events, The Drama League serves over 3,000 artists and 15,000 audience members each season with over 150 events and programs in New York. It was a distinct honor to be invited to be part of their celebratory evening, and we look forward to many more lavish evenings with the Drama League of New York, where their talent blows us away and we hope, our flowers inspire them ever more.

Starbright Visits Columbia University for Nuestra Magia

Everyone at Starbright wanted to bring a bit of beauty to your day and thought the best way was to share with you where our flowers have been and where we’ll be, in our gorgeous hometown of New York City.

We are very excited to be sharing our flowers in bloom with Bloomingdale’s at 6 59th Street in NYC for a floral arranging class! Limited to 45 attendees, a Starbright designer will lead the intimate gathering on November 19th at 1pm in the Housewares Department.

Meet us at Bloomingdale's for a fantastic flower arranging adventure!
Meet us at Bloomingdale’s for a fantastic flower arranging adventure!

The focus of the afternoon will be on how to flawlessly arrange flowers in a vase, with beauty, elegance and pizzazz. We’ll share tips and tricks on creating a floral bouquet that will take your breath away. A $25 reservation fee for the class will be created towards any purchase in the Homes section – and of course, the stunning floral composition that you create will also be going home with you. We hope to see you there and that this will be the first of much collaboration with Bloomingdale’s!

Two weeks ago, Starbright Floral Design had the distinct honor of being invited to adorn Columbia University for the Latinx Heritage Month Showcase of Nuestra Latina in New York City. Heralded as a groundbreaking platform for students of Columbia and Barnard to reflect on the issues faced by the Latinx community, the Showcase was also open to members of the public and very well attended.

The students put together an incredible event that featured music, dance and poetry, which was evocative of the diversity that the Latinx community cherishes in NYC and beyond. Starbright was thrilled to be part of this magical evening and provided the fresh flowers and lush plants to create a tropical oasis in the midst of Manhattan.

Our brilliant floral composers at Starbright sourced moss colored hydrangea to be the base of the bouquets for Nuestra Latina, so that our rich golden orchids, touched with a hint of tiger-print petals, could be the standout feature of the flowers to catch everyone’s eye.

Starbright's flowers created a lush, tropical oasis.

We were also delighted to weave Pin Cushion Protea and Anthurium together to create a tropical atmosphere for the programs of the Latinx Heritage Month to gently rest upon. Starbright’s floral designers knew that this combination of flowers would evoke the festive ambiance while letting the graphics created by the students be the focus.

Starbright wanted to make sure the entire venue was filled with the Latinx ambiance so we positioned two verdant  Areca Palm trees on the stage. Since palm trees are indigenous to many of the same countries that were being celebrated that evening, we thought it was only fitting include those towering palm trees to help the evening feel more reminiscent of the cultures being celebrated.

Between the flowers and the plants that Starbright happily provided for the students at Columbia, the performers were encased in the spirit of the evening. Later, they told us that our involvement with their event made their night feel like the celebratory success that it was and we couldn’t be happier to have been part of such an enchanted evening.

One of the traditions that we hold most dear at Starbright is being a good friend and neighbor to everyone in New York City. We were elated to be at this event at Columbia University and to be a part of the fabric of this amazing institution and all of the events that we eagerly participate in year round.

BOO-tiful Bouquets for Halloween!

If there’s one thing we know at Starbright Floral Design, it’s how to make a stunning statement with flowers and Halloween is no exception! We love getting into the Halloween spirit here in NYC and wanted to share some inspiration with you on how to use flowers, pumpkins and a few well-placed props to give your decor that pop that will make it look like it might go bump in the night…

Pumpkins and Halloween are perfect together. We strive to create an eerie elegance in our Halloween displays and pumpkins are a fantastic foil that allow us to do just that. Using them to enhance our floral compositions is one of our favorite ways to evoke that spooky spirit that everyone is searching for this time of year, in New York City and beyond.

The rich coloring of pumpkins provides a great background for flowers and greenery that we at Starbright relish. Lush succulents and king protea flowers brighten up this humble gourd and transform it into a festive Halloween centerpiece. We framed this pumpkin with harvest corn to evoke a nostalgic yet refined ambiance, wonderful for the autumn season.

sfd6

Twilight lavender calla lily flowers create a vivid exclamation point on our scary squash, while the draped succulents known as amaranthus give a creepy-crawly sensation as they ooze down the pumpkin’s side. A burst of color through the hypericum berries on the side evoke the orange of the pumpkin while making you wonder if they are poisoned or not.

sfd1

But not all pumpkins need to be scary! We carved one up to give it a friendly grin and added a mix of festive fall flowers including dahlias to give the jack o’lantern a perfect coif. Part of the elegance of this floral composition is hidden by the pumpkin itself, for a vase can be stored inside the pumpkin and filled with fresh water to keep your flowers looking fresher for much longer.

sfd2

At Starbright, we love to delight our clients with the unexpected and so we had a wonderful time building this luscious composition. We combined a traditional gourd with an eccentric one to highlight the unique attributes of the green squash. The fun sprays of verdant branches built heightened interest in this composition, with the succulents softening the entire look.

sfd5

One of our clients was looking for something to spook on sight and we had just the special visitor to liven up an otherwise friendly bouquet. A spray of mango toned calla lilies echoed the spiderwebs that wove their way through the flower composition of calla lilies and euphorbia. We’re sure that whoever received this bouquet was given quite a fright!

sfd3

Halloween is one of Starbright’s favorite times to feature whimsical components in our compositions to make a spooky statement. If you’ve carved your pumpkins and hung up the decorations but there’s still something missing, stop by our shop in Manhattan on Halloween. You’ll be able to find that missing floral masterpiece while seeing the staff of Starbright dressed up for the day. We’ll be giving away candy while we create chilling delights!

Starbright and the City

At Starbright Floral Design, we stop to smell the flowers every day. Even though we do, we also find our schedule bountiful with events. We wanted to share with our friends and colleagues what we’ve been up to these past few days. Sometime, somewhere, we hope that you are at a special gathering decorated with our amazing blooms and robust accents.

Starbright was delighted to be invited to enhance the beauty that is the Oculus at the World Trade Center, located in lower Manhattan. Our client was Advertising Week and they had the distinct honor of hosting the first ever event at the Santiago Calatrava designed space that is referred to as a “bird in flight”.

Starbright bedecked the Oculus with lush, willowy palm trees.

The event took place at the Grand Staircase of the Oculus in New York City, which was built with white Italian marble. Advertising Week, which brings the best and brightest of the marketing and entertainment fields together for one week in NYC, wanted to highlight the serenity of the space while evoking the fresh and innovative practices that they are known for creating in their industry. As soon as Advertising Week described their vision for the event, we at Starbright Floral Design knew that lush palm trees would the perfect accompaniment to the evening.

The awe-inspiring vaulted ceiling at the Oculus is the focal point that we wanted to enhance.
The awe-inspiring vaulted ceiling at the Oculus is the focal point that we wanted to enhance.

As some of our clients may not know, not only does Starbright Floral Design create custom floral displays in venues across New York City, we are also able to send our carefully curated plants to be rented for an evening, which is what Advertising Week decided to do in this case. We were thrilled to be a small part of this amazing evening in NYC and look forward to being a partner with Advertising Week for future events.

This past week Starbright also had the privilege of beautifying the Baryshnikov Arts Center in Manhattan for their annual gala, the Fall Fete. The Fall Fete was created to raise funds to support performances and residencies at BAC, while also having a magical evening in NYC with those who are passionate about the arts.

Starbright had been requested to create floral accents that would enhance the elegance of the Center’s Ballroom for the sumptuous dinner, without causing difficulty for guests who wanted to converse while they dined. We rose to the challenge by crafting a runner of blooms and greenery that ran the 18-foot length of each table. Composed of an array of fuchsia calla lilies, orchids, orange pincushion protea flowers and purple eucalyptus, the runner was pin-spot lit from above to enhance the display and create an intimate and inviting atmosphere for the private gala.

Verdant greens provided the perfect background emphasize the floral arrangements.

Our dramatic arrangements that accompanied the photo area for the event were created to create a heightened effect that would make an impact, both visually and emotionally, as guests entered the venue. Staying true to the theme of the evening, these displays were made of a blend of fuchsia calla lilies, orchids and orange pincushion protea flowers, with purple eucalyptus and succulents that took guests’ breath away.

These arrangements created an elevated elegance for photography at the step and repeat wall.

For many of our events, we create variations on a floral theme, and the evening at the Baryshnikov Arts Center in Manhattan was no exception. We crafted another floral runner for the bar, where the delicate, soft curve of the calla lily’s petal could be admired up close.

The length of the bar was lined with calla lilies mixed with greens.

We pride ourselves as florists on remembering the smallest details to ensure the biggest impact in our arrangements. That is why, for the dinner at the Baryshnikov Arts Center in NYC, we added tangerine ribbons to our displays in the lavatories to make sure that elegance abounded wherever guests glanced.

Starbright Floral Design at Harvest in the Square

Starbright Floral Design was thrilled to be an official sponsor of the 21st annual Harvest in the Square that took place in Manhattan on September 22, 2016. This year was, as in previous years, a huge success. Harvest in the Square is a fantastic evening when more than 45 food vendors and 12 wineries come together under a beautiful tent in Union Square to provide an unforgettable evening for attendees by giving them a taste of the best of what each of them have to offer.

hits1aStarbright Floral Design transformed Union Square Park with festive fall foliage.

In addition to showcasing the broad array of culinary masterpieces that Union Square offers, Harvest in the Square also raises funds for the Union Square Partnership. The Union Square Partnership is a community-based nonprofit that is a group of local businesses which have joined together in order to ensure that Union Square in NYC is a beautiful and welcoming space for all who visit. Harvest in the Square is the culminating event of the year and is considered by many to be the preeminent food and wine tasting event in New York City.

A blend of sunflowers, chrysanthemums, wheat and barley moss created a rustic elegance atmosphere for soiree.

Starbright had the distinct honor of decorating the entire venue for Harvest in the Square. We crafted thousands of flowers into centerpieces and decor throughout Union Square Park while staying true to the Harvest theme.

We focused on incorporating sunflowers, wildflowers and other rustic touches to keep in step with the autumnal motif of the evening. Our centerpieces were showcased in wicker baskets and we used calla lilies to add a touch of whimsy and elegance. Starbright was able to incorporate one of our favorite flowers, the orchid, into the arrangements by sourcing incredibly beautiful and unusual orange orchids to make an incredible statement.

Dramatic orange calla lilies were a stunning focal point in the centerpieces.

Starbright also crafted the floral displays for each table at Harvest in the Square. We blended deep violet Licianthus with wild clover and greens to create a subdued display. Our intention was to subtly evoke the theme while letting the attention stay focused on the delicious offerings.

hits6

Starbright’s reserved table displays kept the focus on the culinary delights.

Harvest in the Square attracts a large crowd each year and 2016 was no exception. With over 1,200 attendees, we were excited to offer each one a signature Starbright bouquet. Composed of Roses, Gerbera Daisies and Solidago, the attendees were delighted with this unexpected memento from the event that a team of nine designers at the Starbright shop had composed, using over 5,000 fresh blooms.

hits5

Julie McGonigle from Starbright oversaw the operations for the event.

The entire team at Starbright Floral Design was delighted to play a part in this year’s Harvest in the Square. Our three designers who were onsite for the event were crafting floral displays the entire day and the feedback we received was that the attendees thought the creations were spectacular.

Having raised over five million dollars since the event’s inception, we take great pride in knowing our contribution will help in maintaining and beautifying one of the great gems of New York City: Union Square Park. We’re already looking forward to next year!

August Birth Flowers in NYC: Gladiolus

Gladiolus

Gladiolus has been dubbed the flower of the Gladiators.   It represents strength of character, sincerity, generosity.  In the Victorian age with its secret language of flowers it was said to represent “love at first sight”. Gladiolus derives its name from the latin word for sword and is sometimes called the sword lily.  As a member of the iris family it contains about 260 species.   Only about 10 are native to Europe the rest are native to southern Africa.  The species vary from very small to the spectacular giant flower spikes you see in floral designs. The flower stalk of the Gladiolus contains an extended row of trumpet-shaped, fragrant flowers, all of which face in one direction. Their colors include pink to reddish or light purple with white, contrasting markings, or white to cream or orange to red.

Once upon a time Gladiolus were viewed as an upscale, highly sought after flower but fell into the sympathy arrangement niche.  However, we’ve recently seen a resurgence of the Gladiolus in NYC.    Many upscale restaurants and hotels in NYC have once again incorporated the Gladiolus in their floral decor.

Roses, Roses, Roses: June’s Birth Flower

Roses in NYC are as plentiful as NYC birthdays.  Every year millions of roses are gifted in NYC for any number of occasions.  In June, the appropriate floral gift is the rose as it is June’s birth flower.  Rich in popularity as a symbol of love and romance it hasn’t always been so.   In fact, the rose was first looked upon as a symbol of war.  A civil war that raged on from 1455-1487 between the House of York and the House of Lancaster.   The House of York adopted a white rose, the House of Lancaster was represented by a red rose. The war has been dubbed “The War of the Roses”.  The winner of this war, Tudor Henry VII (The Tudors), merged his Lancastrian rose with the rose of his York bride and thus the creation of the Tudor Rose, the Rose of England.

Roses
Roses, Roses, Roses in NYC

In later years the rose evolved into a form of language creating a secret means of communication between lovers.   In the mid 18th century the wife of the British ambassador in Constantinople described this language in her letters.  Largely due to the publication of her letters after her death, we have the code necessary to decipher the intricate language of roses.  For example if you want to ask your love interest “will you love me?”, send an open white rose.    Want to ask  “Don’t you love me any more?” , send an open yellow rose.      Want to say “I respect and look up to you” then send a bouquet of white roses.   Red roses signify  “forever I Love You”.  However a bouquet of red and white roses state “Together we are one and united”.  Want to declare your attraction to someone but don’t want to go as far as declaring your undying love, then purple roses are the way to go.  Colors alone aren’t enough to deliver the complex messages of love.  In combination with the colors, the number and degree of bloom of the roses have also been assigned meaning.  A dozen roses says  “Be Mine”.   Thirteen roses tells someone we’ll be friends forever.  Three dozen roses expresses “I’m head over heels in love!”.  Six dozen roses or more says “my love for you is limitless”.  In addition to its Victorian assigned message, this last one says “I’m a Starbright Gold club member”!!!.

Regardless of its diverse assigned meanings, the one constant is the rose’s undeniable beauty.  The recipient of a beautiful arrangement of roses is always appreciative.
