We Love Cherry Blossoms in the Springtime!

Is there anything more delightful than cherry blossoms to celebrate the arrival of spring? At Starbright, we cherish this time of year when those beautiful blooms open up to announce that finally, finally…we are witnessing the glorious rebirth of spring!

Cherry blossoms bountiful blooms make this a breathtaking bouquet!

About 1,300 years ago, people started picnicking under cherry blossoms, and we couldn’t image a more splendid way to spend an afternoon in NYC. Beginning in the Nara Period in Japanese history (710-794) and continuing through today, enjoying the magnificence of these flowers in their peak season is a treasured pastime by anyone who has enjoyed their loveliness.

Today, the Japanese gather to have flower-viewing parties to relish in the cherry blossoms as they arrive each spring and at Starbright, we do too! Our party takes place in our Manhattan flower and plant emporium and it is a celebration of the striking display of blooms that visit us on their way to a new home.

The richness of the cherry blossoms are always a delight.

Cherry blossoms in Japan are deeply symbolic and in New York City they are admired as a harbinger of spring, along with endless elegance. In Japan, the beauty and fragility of the cherry blossoms are seen as metaphors for mortality, as well as for the graceful acceptance of what life hands you, whether that’s an unexpected frost or some cheerful sunshine.

The Brooklyn Botanical Garden in New York City will be celebrating the arrival of cherry blossoms at the end of the month, with their annual Sakura Matsuri festival, where they have over 60 events and performances taking place around cherry blossoms. There are many other celebrations throughout the country to mark the arrival of cherry blossoms, but of course, everyone at Starbright loves to stay close to NYC this time of year. The reason we adore New York City’s cherry blossom festivals, in particular, is that we can’t wait to create a stunning masterpiece out of cherry blossoms once we’ve had the chance to visit a festival and are inspired by the brilliance of nature.

More cherry blossoms together means…more beauty to enjoy!

While cherry blossoms can be eaten in moderation, our favorite way to enjoy them is while they are on fresh branches that can stand tall in elegant vases. Their waving blooms are a source of incredible enjoyment and fascination for us at Starbright, where we relish in the natural beauty of one of nature’s most opulent creations.

Of course, to celebrate the cherry blossom season, the brilliant designers at Starbright have been busy creating masterpieces that highlight the soft pinks and gentle whites of the flowers. We adore showcasing them by themselves in Manhattan, as cherry blossoms look incredible on their own. The denseness of each bloom delightfully weighs down the tree bough they are on, giving the entire composition of cherry blossoms a look of rich lushness that’s impossible to resist.

The natural weaving of the branches makes each cherry blossom bouquet uniquely perfect.

We hope as always, that you have the opportunity to enjoy the cherry blossoms in full bloom in a park or festival near you. The renewal of spring is a time of year that everyone at Starbright cherishes — and hope you do, too!

If you’re finding yourself in need of cherry blossoms to lighten up your life, everyone at Starbright is ready to bring this luscious flower into your life! We would love to beflower your home and office with these dazzling seasonal flowers and are just waiting for your call!

Boho Chic Makes a Debut at Starbright!

The effortless elegance of boho chic in New York City is a silhouette that the brilliant designers at Starbright wanted to translate into flowers. Combining flowers and fashion may seem incongruous, but at Starbright, we would advocate that perhaps there is no finer pairing in NYC.

Fashion is, after all, the deconstruction and reconstruction around ideas of style that will fit the human form. Flowers and their many variations from roses to amaryllis, to tulips and orchids and so many more, find themselves placed with other beautiful varieties to form stunning compositions over and over again, in countless ways.

Being inspired by the grace of the effervescent fashion of New York City, everyone at Starbright is excited to unveil our newest addition to the Starbright website: Boho Chic where we cultivate an appreciation for the effortless and subtle beauty of nature.

One of the first ways we did that was by creating Starbright’s own Regal Profusion. With florals dancing in decadent fuchsia, this is a bouquet that will enliven every space and brighten any decor. Filled with rich calla lilies, tulips, orchids and Starbright’s carefully curated stock flowers, our Regal Profusion marries the whimsy of boho chic with the decadence of easy glamour in one vase.

Starbright’s Regal Profusion is decadence in a vase.
Starbright’s Regal Profusion is decadence in a vase.

Not to be outdone by fuchsia, Starbright’s artisanal designers dreamed another dream in creating our own Bohemian Rhapsody for New York City. Composed of lush roses and languid calla lilies, this nosegay is one that is sure to delight the most discerning in Manhattan. Starbright’s designers made sure to evoke the flowing splendor that defines boho chic and is so adored in NYC by combining the vibrant hues of royalty, including violet, magenta and merlot into one magnificent creation.

A Bohemian Rhapsody in NYC is a gorgeous reminder of the loveliness in the world.
A Bohemian Rhapsody in NYC is a gorgeous reminder of the loveliness in the world.

But what — you may be asking — is any boho chic tribute in NYC if it does not elicit the English charm that has always weaved its way into the coveted style of boho chic throughout the world? But fear not, brave reader! At Starbright, we cherish the fantastical juxtapositions that our neighbors across the pond from New York City revel in creating, out of flowers and more. We chose to honor that delightful mischievousness in flowers in our English Charm bouquet, where we brought dense roses and spritely dahlias together in a single vase to utterly bewitch everyone in New York City.

English Charm is a riot of floral beauties.
English Charm is a riot of floral beauties.

At Starbright, we hope to awaken the senses to the giddy happiness that is conjured by our Boho Chic collection, where we strive to bring a profusion of our favorite flowers together for your enjoyment and perusal. In the end, it is beauty in the eye of the beholder that each composition seeks to lure into an incredible story of enchantment, and we welcome you to do that by discovering our newly curated Boho Chic section.

If these bouquets have tickled your fancy or inspired you with an idea of your own making, everyone at Starbright in NYC is standing by to bring your wishes alive through flowers. We can’t wait to make all your floral dreams come true!

NYC-Peony Flowers Are Back!

A little known fact of Paul Revere’s famous ride is that it was the second excited shouting ride he had taken.  His first such ride was in late April,  in which he hurriedly rode around town to spread the news: “The Peonies are coming, the peonies are coming, the peonies are coming!”.   The news helped people forget the issues of the day.  New Yorkers rejoice!  Peonies have arrived.  The unmatched beauty and uniqeness of the Peony have inspired NYC floral designers to create some incredibly beautiful flower arrangements.

Perfect Peony in NYC
Perfect Peony in NYC

Peony derives its name from the GreekPaeon; physician of the gods.  If anything can cure the ills of winter it’s the site of a peony flower.  Its majestic blooms of white, pink and red have aptly earned it the nick name “King of Flowers”.

In the language of flowers a display of Peony expresses bashfulness.   The meaning is an oddity considering the flamboyance of the flower.   Any arrangement containing Peonies shouts out “take notice of me!.”

In today’s global community and travel, Peonies are available throughout the year.  However, their vibrancy and quality peak in spring.

Starbright is fortunate to be situated in New York City’s Flower Market making the “King Flower” available to our clientele.  Let Starbright Floral NYC help liberate those spring smiles from the winter blues with Peony flower delivery in NYC.

Lazarus Rose-The Rose that Grows

Starbright Floral Design issued a press release today proudly announcing the long-awaited arrival of the Lazarus Rose.  The Lazarus Rose is a genetically engineered rose developed by Starbright that grows roots and is ready to be replanted in practically any pot or garden.  It is the dawn of a new day for rose buyers in NYC.  No longer will the roses purchased for a loved one today be contributing to the City’s gigantic trash problem tomorrow.  Rather than becoming a neighborhood blight the Lazarus rose is destined to beautify our great city with thousands of new rose bushes in its first year alone.  The full press release is being republished herein for informational purposes:

PRESS RELEASE

Starbright Floral Design Kicks Off the “Lazarus Rose”. The Most Significant Product Launch since the advent of air travel and genetic engineered plants.
NEW YORK — April 1, 2015 — At a press conference at Starbright headquarters in the heart of New York City’s historic flower district, Nic Faitos , Starbright’s Managing Partner, in association with the Dutch Flower Marketing Association (an industry group whose mission is to promote flower buying throughout the world), announced the availability of the “Lazarus Rose”. A new rose variety that allows the recipient to plant the stem in a garden once the bloom from the arrangement has wilted and create a new rose awaiting to be planted. The concept was conceived by the creative minds of the Go Green Project and designed through many years of collaboration between the finest botanists in the world with Dr. Nisan Sakasi as the lead scientist.
Today’s announcement that the “Lazarus Rose” is available to retail customers of Starbright and volume licensing customers marks the beginning of the most significant product launch in our company’s history and perhaps since Barbara McClintock’s discovery of “Jumping Genes”. The “Lazarus Rose” will be available to retail customers effective immediately. Availability to NYC organizations with volume license agreements will begin shortly but initial supplies are limited to retail customers with Starbright Loyalty Club membership. Volume customers will be supplied for orders FOB New York City for delivery before Mother’s Day and beyond.
Through chromosome engineering, more fully discussed in the science section herein, Turkey’s premier botanist Dr. Nisan Sakasi was able to develop a rose which begins to regenerate as soon as it is clipped. The result is the growth of roots at the cutting site. Currently the Lazarus Rose is limited to the Afrilu Wawaye variety of rose. Accordingly, the price of the Lazarus Rose is for upscale clientele.
Customer feedback through Starbright’s web site, starflor.com , guided product development. “This is a game changing product,” Faitos said. “It’s an incredible step forward in the floral industry with ramifications that are yet unknown but undoubtedly far-reaching. Accordingly, in a press release under separate cover, we’ve announced the formation of a joint venture between Starbright and The Dutch Flower Marketing Association to fully explore the wide-ranging uses of this exciting innovation.” Said Faitos.
First Users See Clear Business Value
Joining Faitos at Starbright’s headquarters was Poisson D’Avril, the president of the Hospitality and Tourism Association of Greater New York.
“In the highly competitive and fast-moving hospitality industry, our advantage comes first from our people and second from everything NYC has to offer. You can add the Lazarus Rose to the list of incomparable NYC attractions.” Said D’Avril. “Nic has allowed several of our higher end venues offer the Lazarus Rose prior to its official release. The response has been extraordinary. Finally, something to give to that person who has everything!”
Original Science
“The ovules of a rose are mega sporangia and typically develop into female gametophytes. These gametophytes give rise to egg cells which, in a typical rose holds the pollen.” Said Dr. Nisan Sakasi. “In the transgenic rose, called the Lazarus Rose, through chromosome engineering, our team was able to develop a rose that has characteristics of an African Violet and behaves like a clipping from an African Violet. The mature egg cells of the African Violet and the Rose are split through chemical mutagens and combined through protoplast fusion. The genetic recombination leads the rose to react just like African Violet clippings that are placed in a propagating agent. The agent used with the rose is simply water with a few pieces of horticultural charcoal placed in the bottom of the container.” Said Dr. Nisan Sakasi. Transcripts of Dr. Nisan Sakasi full procedures are available upon request.
On the Road to the Future
“During the last decade, Starbright has built an impeccable reputation in the floral industry with unsurpassed customer service.” Faitos said. “Although we have been at the forefront of technology, the new product announced today is the most innovative product we’ve ever been involved with, and I believe it signals the beginning of a new wave of innovation that will have a profound impact during the next decade.” Said Nic Faitos, President of Starbright Floral Design.
Located in the heart of NYC’s flower district and founded in 1994, Starbright Floral Design has established the gold standard for customer service within the floral industry. The Company has grown steadily every year since its inception. The Lazarus Rose and other innovative products being worked on currently, has Starbright on the threshold of exponential growth for the coming years.

Spring has Sprung-Springtime Flowers in NYC by Starbright Floral Design NYC

Visit our website for amazing tulip choices!
Tulips are at that peak of their season. The Dutch varieties come in amazing colors!

New Yorkers it is time to rejoice. Spring flowers are here to whisk away the winter blues. Bright colored blossoms a plenty.  A plethora of flowers to choose from. Where do I start?  A good place would be with perhaps the most symbolic and popular images of spring; the Dutch Tulip.

Originally a wildflower growing in Central Asia, the Tulip was introduced in Europe and the Netherlands in the 17th century.  Colors, textures and shapes never seen before contributed to the Tulip’s meteoric rise in popularity amongst Europe’s elite.

Today they are commercially available all year long but their vibrancy and quality are peaking in springtime.

Starbright is fortunate to be situated in New York’s Flower Market making every variety and color Tulip available to our clientele.  Let Starbright Floral NYC help liberate those spring smiles from the winter blues with flower delivery in NYC.  Choose from a vast array of springtime NYC flowers from Starbright’s Springtime Collection.

The Queen of Fall Flowers – The Chrysanthemum….

The chrysantemum is the flower that welcomes the fall season every year since the start of time…

Florists can tell that it’s autumn when chrysanthemums show up in the market. Their large, full heads are the embodiment of the last offerings of the warmer weather, and they are generally found in typical autumn colors- golds, bronzes, reds, oranges and yellows. Some chrysanthemums even lean towards brown, and the green varieties help unify both summer and autumn designs. Chrysanthemums, which are the most widely grown potted plant in the U.S., bloom towards late summer and throughout fall, further making them a perfect symbol of the season.

There are over one thousand varieties of chrysanthemum, which are part of the family Asteraceae. There are actually such an abundance of varieties within that category that they are further divided into thirteen sub-families. Sunflowers, spider and football mums, aster, carnations, gerbers, chamomile and daisies are all part of the Asteracea family! How they are further grouped is dependent upon the shape of the petals, which may lay flat, curl underneath themselves, be reflexed, or even only partially closed in the middle of the petal.

The chrysanthemum pictured is called a football mum, so named for its popularity in use for mothers’ corsages at American football games. Its petals, which are a dark orangey bronze, are a much lighter shade on their underside- a yellow-beige- which make it a visually interesting and quite attractive flower. Although one of the longest-lasting flowers available for floral design, (and gardening,) chrysanthemums have gotten a “bad rap,” in Europe, where they are widely used as funeral flowers, due to their inexpensive cost. In Japan, however, chrysanthemums have been cultivated for so long that they hold a revered place in Japanese history. The emperor’s throne is called the Chrysanthemum Throne, and the highest level of chivalry awarded to Japanese military is called the Imperial Order of the Chrysanthemum.

So next time you call Starbright for a fall arrangement, consider requesting that chrysanthemums be included. There is no more perfect flower than the “Queen of Fall Flowers.” In case you’re wondering, Aster, a member of this same family, is the September birth flower; chrysanthemums are the birth flower for November, officially bringing autumn to a close as the season gives way to winter.

One of the best orders our designers can be asked to fill is a seasonal arrangement. If you call  (800) 520/8999 or place your order online at www.starbrightnyc.com, during fall, we will be sure to make it all things autumnal, be that through the colors or the quintessential chrysanthemum!

Celebrating the Cymbidium Orchid…

Green Cymbidium Orchids floating atop polished river stones.

From time to time a flower variety comes around that earns the top spot at Starbright Floral Design as the gold-standard in most of our floral compositions.  Orchids have earned their rightful place in the sun at Starbright and you can expect to see one of the many varieties of orchids in pretty much every flower display that we create.  There are more varieties of orchids in our world than one can even imagine.  The cymbidium orchid is prominently featured throughout the year in many of our flower centerpieces for event and in floral arrangements that are sent as gifts. This orchid rightly deserves its position in the forefront of floral design, for it is beautiful, versatile and comes in a wide array of colors.

Cymbidiums grow from a large plant with enough long, slender leaves that it often looks bushy. A single stem will show anywhere from seven to fifteen flowers. On its own, a single stem makes quite a statement, especially when used in a very simple arrangement. For some clients, we will occasionally place polished river stones at the base of the vase, maybe a swirl of lily grass atop those, and then the cymbidium fills the rest of the vase. Outside of the vase, a cymbidium will hold its own when placed simply with some curly willow branches or a broad tropical leaf.  Entire stems of cymbidium can also be used in taller arrangements, usually of the scale and type that would be appropriate for a corporate event or large celebration.  In these instances, cymbidiums ramp up the sumptuousness of the arrangement.

Additionally, the individual blooms of a cymbidium can be cut from the main stem and put in water tubes, to then be used in a medium or short arrangement, or even in bouquets. Often Starbright has used white, cream or green cymbidiums in traditional bridal bouquets. Cymbidium blooms are a favorite for corsages and boutonnieres, for they are simultaneously delicate and bold enough to make a statement. Using cymbidiums for personal flowers-to-wear has an extra benefit, as cymbidium have one of the most delicious, clean scents of any flower. The individual blooms can also be used for a simple, quick accent decor which we loosely refer to as a “floaty.” This involves a small, short vase, probably no more than four or five inches in diameter and four inches tall, with a half-inch of water at the bottom in which the cymbidium rests. Stones, gems, sand and a variety of other materials can be placed under the cymbidium for additional color or texture.

A full cymbidium orchid stem inside a vase with polished river stones and willow branches as an accent.

Cymbidium orchids are a flower which has been prized for a long time. In ancient Greece, they were a symbol of beauty and strength. It was believed that if a man ate large cymbidium tubers, he would have a boy, and if he ate small shoots, he and his wife would have a girl. In Victorian times, cymbidiums came to symbolize luxury. The star-shaped flower, whether used as a whole stem or an individual bloom, certainly adds elegance to any arrangement.
