The Story Behind Administrative Professionals Week

For every joyful holiday that we celebrate in New York City, there is a wonderful history as to why we do. From Christmas to Easter, New Year’s and Memorial Day, there are reasons why those dates have been chosen to honor those occasions, and at Starbright, we love to know what the story is behind any occasion for flowers!

Administrative Professionals Week is the perfect time for a bouquet. It’s also a holiday that has a long history behind it, which explains why we take this week to exalt our incredible secretaries, administrative assistants, receptionists, and other administrative support professionals in NYC.

Starbright’s Bohemian Rhapsody is a wonderful way to celebrate the Administrative Professionals in your life!

Launched in 1952 at the behest of National Secretaries Association (now the International Association of Administrative Professionals) and public relations executives, the week was set aside to celebrate the incredible work that secretaries, administrative assistants, receptionists, and other administrative support professionals do every day in New York City.

The group who petitioned to create Administrative Professionals Week wanted more people to enter the secretarial field, as they thought it was a wonderful career choice. Additionally, with lower birth-rates and a booming economy at the time, the profession needed more attention in a bid to attract the best and the brightest to the field. The week in honor of the administrative assistant profession was designed to raise awareness of the tremendous work that they do every day — and to promote the industry to others.

The U.S. Secretary of Commerce in 1952 was Charles Sawyer and he bestowed national recognition upon the National Secretaries Association by designating a week for the celebrations to take place. Though the week had originally been recognized in June, the timing was changed to be the last week of April, which at Starbright we think is perfect, because all the flowers are abloom!

Today, the holiday is widely observed both domestically in the United States and abroad. Typically marked with performances, flowers and other gifts, it is the best time of year to show the secretaries, administrative assistants, receptionists, and other administrative support professionals how much you value the indispensable work they do every day.

An entire week was set aside to have an opportunity to fete administrative professionals so that there would be enough time to take them out to lunch at different venues. And while we strongly support administration professionals being recognized for their contributions, at Starbright we’re a little biased and think that they would love some flowers, too!

Known as Administrative Professionals Week, with Administrative Professionals Day taking place on April 26th, this week gives us a time to honor the incredible work that secretaries, administrative assistants, receptionists, and other administrative support professionals do every day in New York City.

Boho Chic Makes a Debut at Starbright!

The effortless elegance of boho chic in New York City is a silhouette that the brilliant designers at Starbright wanted to translate into flowers. Combining flowers and fashion may seem incongruous, but at Starbright, we would advocate that perhaps there is no finer pairing in NYC.

Fashion is, after all, the deconstruction and reconstruction around ideas of style that will fit the human form. Flowers and their many variations from roses to amaryllis, to tulips and orchids and so many more, find themselves placed with other beautiful varieties to form stunning compositions over and over again, in countless ways.

Being inspired by the grace of the effervescent fashion of New York City, everyone at Starbright is excited to unveil our newest addition to the Starbright website: Boho Chic where we cultivate an appreciation for the effortless and subtle beauty of nature.

Pantone Announces the 2017 Color of the Year!

With the fresh start of 2017, everyone at Starbright is thrilled with the new color of the year from Pantone called Greenery. And as (we hope!) your favorite florists in NYC, of course we would adore this color. A refreshing combination of greens and yellows, Greenery represents the optimism and all that is possible in 2017.

According to Pantone, Greenery is supposed to symbolize new beginnings, and in the spirit of Greenery, our floral crafters wanted to make that a reality for New York City. One of the ways that we’re doing that is by creating sumptuous flower bouquets in our Emerald Isle collection that incorporate Greenery into the mix. Of course, there is a bit of greenery to go with the Greenery!

Our lush Highlander floral composition is one example of how we’re bringing Greenery to Manhattan. An abundance of greens allows the different textures and hues of the flowers that are incorporated in the composition to take center stage, which will make a tremendous statement in a home of office in NYC. The grounding rocks at the base of the vase provide an unexpected richness and the surprising pop of white and burgundy orchids perfectly complements the beautiful Greenery.

Pantone notes that Greenery is evocative of the zesty, fresh breath of spring air and Starbright’s New York City florists adore this notion. Everyone at Starbright in NYC wanted to honor that spirit of vigor and peace by blending verdant Greenery with soothing, snowy whites. Starbright’s Calla River of Hope united these ideas of meditative zen in a crystal clear square vase, with the inspiration leaping outside the box! Our calla lilies rest peacefully alongside one edge, while lively blades of grass perk up the other side of the vase. Softening river stones at the base of the composition creates a beautiful foundation for all of this magic to spring from.

One of our favorite things at Starbright is how flowers can be designed to create so many different sentiments in NYC. Being true to the Greenery theme encouraged Starbright designers to dream of new and fascinating creations for our beloved New York City clients.

One of the ways we honored the Pantone color of the year of Greenery was by featuring green cymbium orchids to stand by themselves in our Zensational creation. Generally mixed into other compositions, the Greenery theme encouraged Starbright floral designers to consider color in a new light and use this terrific orchid in an exciting way. The green cymbium orchid is a proud and elegant flower that, on its own, is quite striking and dramatic. Everyone at Starbright was thrilled to have this beauty shine for others to admire.

Beginning to Look Like Chrismukkah!

With the holidays just around the corner, all of us at Starbright Floral Design in NYC couldn’t be more excited that Christmas and Hannukah share December 25th this year! To get into the holiday spirit, we wanted to share some dazzling, festive flower ideas that we know would bring your home comfort and joy this season.

Drama and splendor through flowers make the holidays feel that much more festive.

Amaryllis is one of our favorite holiday flowers to build into creations for New York City, and with its stunning height and rich hues, it’s easy to see why. When combined with long calla lilies and filled in with sumptuous pine greenery, this composition becomes a star at every holiday gathering.

Another way Starbright designers celebrate the Yuletide in NYC is to craft low centerpieces to feast over. With a single candle flickering to illuminate the grace of the seasonal delights like dense evergreen foliage combined with lush, snowy-white hydrangea and calla lilies, we think this would be a smashing success to add to any holiday table this year.

Starbright designers relish evoking the end of year jubilee celebrations through flowers in Manhattan. They do this by creating a perfectly assembled compilation of the season’s greatest florals. Have a Starbright-ful Thanksgiving!

Everyone at Starbright Floral Design is always thankful our clients are our friends and our days are filled with flowers. We love what we do in New York City and are so passionate about floral design because we know our work brings smiles to others. And that’s our favorite thing!

In preparation of this Thanksgiving, we’ve been cooking up a floral feast for your senses. If you’re still looking for a bit of inspiration for a centerpiece filled with flowers, we have some ideas for you and would be delighted to deliver any and all of these incredible floral compositions to you in NYC and beyond!

Cornucopias, also know as “horns of plenty”, can trace their origins back to classical antiquity. But here in New York City and all throughout America, these time-honored creations are ubiquitous at Thanksgiving. Of course, the version that Starbright’s visionary designers crafted is abounding with flowers, and we would hope that you’d want it no other way!

Starbright took special care to ensure that the best of autumn’s colors shined in this gorgeous floral composition.

Filled with sunflowers, roses and additional flowers like calla lilies, we think that our Cornucopias bring a sense of bounty to any gathering. Perfect as a centerpiece or as a statement elsewhere in your home or business in NYC, Cornucopias evoke a sense of welcoming community through their rich composition and lush abundance.

Made with fresh foliage and flowers with a base of fresh, rust toned chrysanthemums, this turkey has been certified as cruelty-free. It’s a great addition for every Thanksgiving celebration, near in NYC or far, that wants to add a bit of whimsy through floral décor.

We know some of our beloved friends don’t adore the cold in New York City and wish that they were someplace warmer for the holidays. It was with them in mind that we created our Tropical Thanksgiving masterpiece.

We were delighted to be asked to create something that would remind the recipient more of Bermuda than NYC and think that the russet calla lilies pay tribute to our turkiest of holidays.

BOO-tiful Bouquets for Halloween!

If there’s one thing we know at Starbright Floral Design, it’s how to make a stunning statement with flowers and Halloween is no exception! We love getting into the Halloween spirit here in NYC and wanted to share some inspiration with you on how to use flowers, pumpkins and a few well-placed props to give your decor that pop that will make it look like it might go bump in the night…

Pumpkins and Halloween are perfect together. We strive to create an eerie elegance in our Halloween displays and pumpkins are a fantastic foil that allow us to do just that. Using them to enhance our floral compositions is one of our favorite ways to evoke that spooky spirit that everyone is searching for this time of year, in New York City and beyond.

The rich coloring of pumpkins provides a great background for flowers and greenery that we at Starbright relish. Lush succulents and king protea flowers brighten up this humble gourd and transform it into a festive Halloween centerpiece. We framed this pumpkin with harvest corn to evoke a nostalgic yet refined ambiance, wonderful for the autumn season.

Twilight lavender calla lily flowers create a vivid exclamation point on our scary squash, while the draped succulents known as amaranthus give a creepy-crawly sensation as they ooze down the pumpkin’s side. A burst of color through the hypericum berries on the side evoke the orange of the pumpkin while making you wonder if they are poisoned or not.

But not all pumpkins need to be scary! We carved one up to give it a friendly grin and added a mix of festive fall flowers including dahlias to give the jack o’lantern a perfect coif. Part of the elegance of this floral composition is hidden by the pumpkin itself, for a vase can be stored inside the pumpkin and filled with fresh water to keep your flowers looking fresher for much longer.

At Starbright, we love to delight our clients with the unexpected and so we had a wonderful time building this luscious composition. We combined a traditional gourd with an eccentric one to highlight the unique attributes of the green squash. The fun sprays of verdant branches built heightened interest in this composition, with the succulents softening the entire look.

One of our clients was looking for something to spook on sight and we had just the special visitor to liven up an otherwise friendly bouquet. A spray of mango toned calla lilies echoed the spiderwebs that wove their way through the flower composition of calla lilies and euphorbia. We’re sure that whoever received this bouquet was given quite a fright!

Halloween is one of Starbright’s favorite times to feature whimsical components in our compositions to make a spooky statement. If you’ve carved your pumpkins and hung up the decorations but there’s still something missing, stop by our shop in Manhattan on Halloween. November Birth Flower: Chrysanthemums, flower with an identity crisis…

Chrysanthemums were first cultivated in China as a flowering herb in the 15th Century BC. The flower was brought to Japan in the 8th Century and the Emperor adopted the flower as his official seal. The flower was brought to Europe in the 17th Century and named from the Greek for “Gold Flower”, a reflection of its original color.

These days the flowers come in various forms and can be daisy-like, decorative pompons, or buttons. In addition to the traditional yellow, other colors are available such as white, purple and red.

In the United States, Chrysanthemums are identified as cheerful holiday flowers. Fall arrangements and Thanksgiving Day Flowers in NYC and throughout the country incorporate Chrysanthemums in their decor. However, many European countries (France, Italy, Spain, Hungary and Croatia) have identified Chrysanthemums with death. Accordingly, their use in floral arrangements is limited to funerals or on graves.

Other Uses:

Be sure to bring Chrysanthemums with you when taking a walk in the jungle. The flower is considered a natural source as an insect repellent. The Pyrethins when extracted and applied on the skin in an oil suspension or as a powder can be lethal to insects such as mosquitoes. The Chinese have used the flower for its antiseptic and antibiotic qualities for centuries.

Flowers: The Feel-Good Medicine Series. Part One: Color

Many theories have been put forth trying to explain the relationship (the cause and effect) between flowers and the blissful emotions they generate. Today we begin a blog series that will take us on a journey through the therapeutic world of flowers in search of the answer to the question. Why do flowers make us feel good?

COLOR:

The first theory of why flowers make us feel so good is rooted in the psychological effects of color. Several ancient cultures (the Chinese, the Egyptians) believed they could heal ailments using color. This is known as Chromo-therapy. Still used in today’s holistic medicine, color has been shown to have an impact on one’s mood…

Blue brings calmness and serenity. There seems to be a mental association between night and the color blue. Several municipalities have even seized on the theory and installed blue street lighting. In 2000 Glasgow installed blue lighting to improve its landscape. It was later reported that the crime rate was reduced in areas that had blue lighting! In a similar effort to reduce agressive driving, Tokyo installed 152 blue lights on a stretch of highway in 2001.

Green is the color that symbolizes nature and the natural world. Researchers have found that green can invoke feelings of good fortune, health and tranquility.

Red is a bright, warm color that evokes strong emotions. Red is often associated with love, warmth and comfort. Red is also considered a strong, even angry color, that creates intense feelings, even excitement. Consider the many ways that the color red is used in a phrase or colloquialism: red-neck, red-hot, red-handed, paint-the-town-red, seeing-red, the-red-eye.

Every color imaginable is represented by one flower or another. Although it is clear from study after study that color has an effect on people’s moods, these effects are not always positive. What is certain is that any flower in any color will have a positive effect on those who receive and enjoy them. It might be a bit of a leap to say that flowers of one particular color have a more positive effect than flowers of another color.

The moral of the story? Send someone flowers! If you know their favorite color, then that is great! If not, all the colors are beautiful and you can send those. Flowers do make people happy and the bright vivid colors bring us joy and happiness. They lift us up, the help our spirits rise and most of all they make us smile. Send someone flowers today and sit back and wait for the phone to ring. The enthusiasm that comes through the telephone line will astound you! What other research do you really need in order to prove the point? That loud over-the-top, super-giddy “thank youuuuuuuuuu!” is research enough!
