The Start of Springtime

Of all of the seasons in New York City, there is none more filled with beautiful flowers than spring. From budding magnolia trees to burgeoning tulips, daffodils and other floral treasures, we confess — it is the favorite season of us here at Starbright!

Fresh florals are an enchanting way to welcome the new season, and though parts of New York City might still be twinkling with patches of snow, we know that green fields and gorgeous flowers waving in the wind are moments away. To help usher in spring, the endlessly creative flower designers at Starbright created some new delights to tickle your floral fancies.

Starbright’s Spring Fling is a lush celebration of the vernal equinox and it’s easy to see why. Composed of dense roses and decadent lilacs, this bouquet is the perfect accompaniment to spring in New York City. The delicious lilies will delicately scent the room, while the symphony of floral colors proclaims the wondrous return of spring for all who see the bouquet in NYC.

Starbright’s Spring Fling is a joyous jubilee of springtime colors and scents.

With spring comes the renewal of our fields and grasses in New York City; from bountiful parks to rolling meadows and best of all — these are usually covered with tulips! Tulips are the epitome of spring to us at Starbright and to revel in these longer days, our Starbright florists created a sensational tribute to our adored season. Pixie’s Promise is abounding in vibrant yellow tulips, anchored with verdant succulents and presented in a clear crystal vase, making this stunning bouquet a wonderful way to welcome spring in NYC.

Pixie’s Promise from Starbright evokes the beauty of spring.

With the longer days and milder weather, spring in New York City is a time to cherish. We are so excited to look ahead to the warmer days that will be filled with flowers and the sunshine — of course, we needed to convey these sentiments with flowers!

Springtime is magical in NYC. It’s a mystical time of rebirth and renewal that we all hope for during the long, cold winters in Manhattan. Now that spring has finally arrived, we wanted to honor that bucolic elegance that leaves everyone at Starbright spellbound. It is with those thoughts in mind that our artisanal Starbright florists created the ever-lovely Rustic Spring bouquet.

Starbright’s Rustic Spring brings together everything dazzling for the season.

Combining roses at their peak ripeness with sweet lilac blooms, Starbright’s Rustic Spring promises to bring the picturesque style of spring into your New York City home or office. The alluring scent of lilacs evokes days of fresh breezes and budding flowers while the roses bring to mind the ever-richening landscape in NYC.

With all of New York City abloom, there is no other place in the world like spring in Manhattan. We cherish this time with our friends and clients as everyone at Starbright toils to honor this most magnificent of seasons. If we have captured your fancy with one of our flights of flowers, we would love to hear from you! Call or stop by our overflowing plant and flower emporium in New York City — we would adore seeing you as we welcome spring!

Boho Chic Makes a Debut at Starbright!

The effortless elegance of boho chic in New York City is a silhouette that the brilliant designers at Starbright wanted to translate into flowers. Combining flowers and fashion may seem incongruous, but at Starbright, we would advocate that perhaps there is no finer pairing in NYC.

Fashion is, after all, the deconstruction and reconstruction around ideas of style that will fit the human form. Flowers and their many variations from roses to amaryllis, to tulips and orchids and so many more, find themselves placed with other beautiful varieties to form stunning compositions over and over again, in countless ways.

Being inspired by the grace of the effervescent fashion of New York City, everyone at Starbright is excited to unveil our newest addition to the Starbright website: Boho Chic where we cultivate an appreciation for the effortless and subtle beauty of nature.

One of the first ways we did that was by creating Starbright’s own Regal Profusion. With florals dancing in decadent fuchsia, this is a bouquet that will enliven every space and brighten any decor. Filled with rich calla lilies, tulips, orchids and Starbright’s carefully curated stock flowers, our Regal Profusion marries the whimsy of boho chic with the decadence of easy glamour in one vase.

Starbright’s Regal Profusion is decadence in a vase.
Starbright’s Regal Profusion is decadence in a vase.

Not to be outdone by fuchsia, Starbright’s artisanal designers dreamed another dream in creating our own Bohemian Rhapsody for New York City. Composed of lush roses and languid calla lilies, this nosegay is one that is sure to delight the most discerning in Manhattan. Starbright’s designers made sure to evoke the flowing splendor that defines boho chic and is so adored in NYC by combining the vibrant hues of royalty, including violet, magenta and merlot into one magnificent creation.

A Bohemian Rhapsody in NYC is a gorgeous reminder of the loveliness in the world.

But what — you may be asking — is any boho chic tribute in NYC if it does not elicit the English charm that has always weaved its way into the coveted style of boho chic throughout the world? But fear not, brave reader! At Starbright, we cherish the fantastical juxtapositions that our neighbors across the pond from New York City revel in creating, out of flowers and more. We chose to honor that delightful mischievousness in flowers in our English Charm bouquet, where we brought dense roses and spritely dahlias together in a single vase to utterly bewitch everyone in New York City.

English Charm is a riot of floral beauties.

At Starbright, we hope to awaken the senses to the giddy happiness that is conjured by our Boho Chic collection, where we strive to bring a profusion of our favorite flowers together for your enjoyment and perusal. In the end, it is beauty in the eye of the beholder that each composition seeks to lure into an incredible story of enchantment, and we welcome you to do that by discovering our newly curated Boho Chic section.

If these bouquets have tickled your fancy or inspired you with an idea of your own making, everyone at Starbright in NYC is standing by to bring your wishes alive through flowers. We can’t wait to make all your floral dreams come true!

Bidding Adieu to Valentine’s…for now!

You’ll forgive us, dear reader (we hope!) if we linger on the holiday of love for just a bit longer…

We admit, at Starbright there’s nothing like the language of love expressed through perfectly curated blooms and Valentine’s Day is one of our most favorite times of year in New York City. The love! The passion! The artful ways lovers choose to celebrate their special union. At Starbright, our hearts are set aflutter just reminiscing about all the wonderful touches our romantic Romeos — and Juliets — added to their bouquets to express their adoration this year in New York City.

InStyle

InStyle magazine was on-hand at Starbright’s NYC flower and plant emporium for this year’s Valentine’s Day to chat with some of the gentlemen who came to pay us a call. Terming them “hot guys” — and who are we to argue — InStyle captured the bouquets these intrepid New Yorkers had crafted for their love, along with the story on why those particular flowers were chosen. Ranging from decadent red roses to intricate wildflowers and lilies, there was a huge variety of flowers that these New York men chose, but no matter the request, Starbright was ready to fulfill their floral dreams.

InStyle said, "Alex (24) who gets flowers for his lady once a week got a large bouquet of red roses for Valentine's Day. He says getting flowers for her is a fresh display of his love for her." -- photo by egozdes@gmail.com

Starbright had some bashful and some proud gentlemen having beautiful bouquets crafted for their loves in NYC, all doubtlessly tickled to be identified as a “hot guy” by the discerning and distinguished InStyle “hot guy” judge. Of course, Starbright was only too happy to provide the background in New York City for the sweet interviews and hope to see these gentlemen callers again soon.

CBS

At Starbright, we were thrilled to see that CBS was airing information on how to get the most bang for your buck when it comes to flowers. It can sometimes be confusing to figure out how to make the biggest statement with flowers in New York City, but with this segment airing all over the country, everyone at Starbright is hopeful that the viewers were able to capitalize on the tricks and tips that CBS offered to get the best bouquet of flowers possible, while staying in budget.

Starbright's Be Still My Heart bouquet is composed of lush roses and lilies that would make anyone swoon.

In prior years, Starbright has been honored to be visited by CBS to talk about flowers for Valentine’s Day in NYC. It is one of Starbright’s great delights to help our New York City friends and clients convey their sentiments through flowers and we strive to always surpass expectations. Talking with news outlets like CBS helps Starbright spread our message of how wonderfully flowers can convey every sentiment, no matter how big or small a budget might be.

Starbright's Breathtaking Beauty is three dozen long stemmed roses; there's nothing more romantic.

Although it is great regret that we say adieu to Valentine’s Day 2017, it does mean that the calendar is filled with upcoming holidays and celebrations all throughout New York City. Everyone at Starbright is ready to beflower all of Manhattan. With St. Patty’s Day on the horizon and the delicious color of Greenery being selected by Pantone for color of the year, Starbright’s brilliant designers are already dreaming of the masterpieces they can create. If we didn’t see you for Valentine’s Day, we missed you and do hope that you’ll stop by soon!

Starbright in the Dutch News!

Over the ocean and through the woods, do Starbright’s flowers journey; a long trip that finishes by the blooms landing in New York City. We have been delighted to source Starbright’s decadent blooms in NYC from Holland for over two decades. We were tickled when two publications in Holland wanted to feature Starbright and the floral work we do in Manhattan — of course we said yes!

Starbright was honored to be featured in two Dutch floral magazines.

Starbright was featured in two Dutch trade journals for professional growers of flowers and plants. Starbright’s own Nic Faitos, senior partner and flower-cultivator-extraordinaire, was interviewed to share some insight on how and why Starbright chooses Dutch flowers when there are less expensive options available.

Nic said it best when he mentioned, “There are cheaper options, but not better ones.”

Starbright's superior flowers are flown in from Holland.
Starbright’s superior flowers are flown in from Holland.

As our beloved friends and clients know, Starbright never compromises on quality. There are a lot of florists in NYC and we are grateful that Starbright has been able to create our own niche in the floral world of Manhattan. One of the ways that Starbright has been able to do that is by always focusing on quality and ensuring that our clients always receive the best flowers available.

The Dutch trade magazines noted that Starbright uses flowers from Holland to adorn “…lobbies of hotels like Park Avenue, events at the New York University, the yearly Peter Stuyvesant Gala and the penthouses of celebrities.”

We were thrilled for Starbright to be interviewed by Dutch trade journals.
We were thrilled for Starbright to be interviewed by Dutch trade journals.

And it’s true! One of the ways we love to express ourselves is through Dutch flowers. As Nic mentioned to the trade journals from Holland, Dutch flowers are heartier and larger, they are of better quality and last longer than flowers from other countries. Starbright loves Dutch flowers so much, it’s one of the ways that we differentiate ourselves from other florists in NYC; we even mention our dedication to Dutch flowers through our social media platforms, which we adore.

“Even after airline transport – either on water or in carton boxes – the Dutch quality is incomparable,” Nic said.

Nic Faitos spoke with the trade publications on behalf of Starbright.

Starbright is able to serve the very discerning upper corporate segment of the NYC market by almost exclusively using Dutch flowers. One of the flowers that Starbright needs to source elsewhere are chrysanthemums, which are banned from import into New York City and the rest of America.

Starbright was thrilled that Nic had the opportunity to mention that we enjoy hosting Flower Power Happy Hours for our clients, when all of Starbright’s flowers are half price on certain days and times, and Starbright’s recent participation in the Petal it Forward initiative in Manhattan. If you find yourself in Holland anytime soon, keep your eyes peeled for a copy of the Dutch trader journals…Nic would love to autograph it and give you a bouquet to go with it!

Starbright Floral Design has been spreading beauty through blossoms in New York City and beyond for over two decades. It is our honor and delight to thrill you with breathtaking floral compositions each and everytime.

As a full-service florist with a sweeping emporium located in Chelsea, you’ll find that Starbright is overflowing with fresh flowers, orchids, plants and so much more.

We understand that sometimes the only way to convey your thoughts and wishes is through flowers, so we offer same-day delivery in Manhattan, all of New York City and beyond.

Our floral designers and innovators are some of the best in the business. Starbright is honored to have earned the nickname “The Official Florist of the City that Never Sleeps” by over 200 concierges throughout NYC. We love to live up to that sobriquet by always going above and beyond for our friends and clients by ensuring that each floral bouquet is a magnificent creation.

We would be delighted if you visited us online or in our store and would love to make your floral dreams come true!

Warm regards from all of us at Starbright, “The Official Florist of the City That Never Sleeps”.

Flowers 101: The Alstroemeria

At Starbright Floral Design, it is our great delight to bring you the occasional missive where we can feature the flowers that capture our fancy — and we hope yours! One of our greatest passions is introducing our friends and clients to the myriad of stunning flowers that fill our world.

If you haven’t heard of the Alstroemeria flower, we’re about to make your day! Also known as a Peruvian Lily, these fun and festive blooms are a favorite among florists in New York City, and it’s easy to see why.

Lavender and white Alstroemeria are stunning with their showy blossoms.
Lavender and white Alstroemeria are stunning with their showy blossoms.

The depth of beauty of the Alstroemeria unfolds before your eyes; while you might first be captivated by its resemblance to lilies, as you gaze more deeply into it, you will discover a cheetah-like pattern etched on the inner petals of each flower.

Symbolizing friendship and devotion, Alstroemerias epitomize this through their incredible longevity. As florists, one of the attributes we love about the Alstroemeria is the subtle and slow bloom of each flower. Each bouquet of Alstroemerias lasts longer than many other compositions, bringing a smile to everyone who sees it. If you are looking for a stunning display that will last for almost two weeks in a vase, look no further than these flowers.

Grown in a variety of hues, from deep apricot and vibrant lavender to snowy white, Alstroemeria flowers are stunning in every shade. The sunny yellows, gorgeous pinks and joyful reds of this flower make it a captivating addition to any bouquet. In addition to weaving Alstroemerias in our compositions, another way we at Starbright love to honor the beauty of these flowers is to arrange them with more Alstroemerias of different colors for a jubilant display, perfect for an entryway or dining room.

Alstroemerias festive spirit is readily seen when grouped together in a bouquet.
Alstroemerias festive spirit is readily seen when grouped together in a bouquet.

Alstroemerias have no scent and while some may miss the perfume of blossoms, we at Starbright think that the overwhelming ornamentation of the flowers more than compensates for this.

Alstroemerias are bountiful throughout NYC and that is thanks to the hybrids that have been cultivated which allow a year-round growing season. Native to South America, some varieties of this flower grow in the US and can even be cultivated in New York City’s climate, though Alstroemerias may not survive through the harsh NYC winters.

If you choose to adorn a space with Alstroemeria flowers and can afford to wait a bit to see their beauty shine, look for blooms that have not yet opened. Although less magnificent at that stage, you will be rewarded for your patience with the joy of seeing each blossom slowly open to a showy display.

pl1
Alstroemerias mixed with other flowers highlights their unique beauty.

For all cut flowers including Alstroemerias, water should be refreshed daily, or as soon as it is not crystal clear. At Starbright, we ensure that all of our flowers are only enjoying water that we ourselves would relish drinking. Our flowers have only the cleanest water to nourish them.

We hope that you enjoyed discovering Alstroemeria as we have loved being able to expound upon the beauty and care of these flowers. All of us at Starbright warmly invite you to visit us to see the these flowers and more up close. And while you’re visiting, remember to have the perfect bouquet curated just for you. We look forward to seeing you soon!

August Birth Flowers in NYC: Gladiolus

Gladiolus

Gladiolus has been dubbed the flower of the Gladiators.   It represents strength of character, sincerity, generosity.  In the Victorian age with its secret language of flowers it was said to represent “love at first sight”. Gladiolus derives its name from the latin word for sword and is sometimes called the sword lily.  As a member of the iris family it contains about 260 species.   Only about 10 are native to Europe the rest are native to southern Africa.  The species vary from very small to the spectacular giant flower spikes you see in floral designs. The flower stalk of the Gladiolus contains an extended row of trumpet-shaped, fragrant flowers, all of which face in one direction. Their colors include pink to reddish or light purple with white, contrasting markings, or white to cream or orange to red.

Once upon a time Gladiolus were viewed as an upscale, highly sought after flower but fell into the sympathy arrangement niche.  However, we’ve recently seen a resurgence of the Gladiolus in NYC.    Many upscale restaurants and hotels in NYC have once again incorporated the Gladiolus in their floral decor.

Roses, Roses, Roses: June’s Birth Flower

Roses in NYC are as plentiful as NYC birthdays.  Every year millions of roses are gifted in NYC for any number of occasions.  In June, the appropriate floral gift is the rose as it is June’s birth flower.  Rich in popularity as a symbol of love and romance it hasn’t always been so.   In fact, the rose was first looked upon as a symbol of war.  A civil war that raged on from 1455-1487 between the House of York and the House of Lancaster.   The House of York adopted a white rose, the House of Lancaster was represented by a red rose. The war has been dubbed “The War of the Roses”.  The winner of this war, Tudor Henry VII (The Tudors), merged his Lancastrian rose with the rose of his York bride and thus the creation of the Tudor Rose, the Rose of England.

Roses
Roses, Roses, Roses in NYC

In later years the rose evolved into a form of language creating a secret means of communication between lovers.   In the mid 18th century the wife of the British ambassador in Constantinople described this language in her letters.  Largely due to the publication of her letters after her death, we have the code necessary to decipher the intricate language of roses.  For example if you want to ask your love interest “will you love me?”, send an open white rose.    Want to ask  “Don’t you love me any more?” , send an open yellow rose.      Want to say “I respect and look up to you” then send a bouquet of white roses.   Red roses signify  “forever I Love You”.  However a bouquet of red and white roses state “Together we are one and united”.  Want to declare your attraction to someone but don’t want to go as far as declaring your undying love, then purple roses are the way to go.  Colors alone aren’t enough to deliver the complex messages of love.  In combination with the colors, the number and degree of bloom of the roses have also been assigned meaning.  A dozen roses says  “Be Mine”.   Thirteen roses tells someone we’ll be friends forever.  Three dozen roses expresses “I’m head over heels in love!”.  Six dozen roses or more says “my love for you is limitless”.  In addition to its Victorian assigned message, this last one says “I’m a Starbright Gold club member”!!!.

Regardless of its diverse assigned meanings, the one constant is the rose’s undeniable beauty.  The recipient of a beautiful arrangement of roses is always appreciative.

At Starbright Floral Design, we’ve recently seen a huge increase in the popularity of succulent plants and gardens.

Succulent Garden
Succulent Garden from Starbright Floral Design

Succulents are notable for their appearance; their leaves or other parts tend to be broad and fleshy so that they can absorb and store water in dry environments. Some well-known succulents include cactus and aloe, but this unique type of plant goes well beyond those household names. From colorful echeveria to hardy sedum, there is a wide range of beautiful and versatile succulent plants that are getting lots of attention from gardeners, landscape architects, and wedding planners. As Pacific Horticulture states:

Succulents are hot! Landscape professionals and home gardeners…are expanding their plant palettes to include these uniquely functional plants. Over the last couple of years, landscape architects and designers have reported…that many clients are asking specifically for a custom-designed succulent garden. This is a big moment for succulents.

Of course, Starbright has some great options to get you started with your very own urban succulent garden. This Succulent Zen Garden comes in a handsome wooden container and would look absolutely wonderful on any mantle. Meanwhile, our Succulent Glass Menagerie would make the perfect centerpiece for a living room table. Whether you choose one of these or another beautiful succulent arrangements from our site, you’ll to know how to care for your new indoor garden. Here are some tips for keeping your succulents healthy and happy.

Succulent Garden
Succulent Garden from Starbright Floral Design

Tip #1: Water only when the soil has fully dried

Because succulents are made for retaining water, you can water them less than you would other indoor plants. Wait until the soil in which they’re planted is completely dry before you add any more water. In a humid climate like New York City’s in the summer, watering once every few days should suffice. Keep an eye out for overwatering by watching out for the stems constricting and turning black.

Tip #2: Give them light—but not direct midday sun

While it can be difficult in an indoor setting, it’s important to give your succulent garden natural light. But be careful: succulents prefer indirect light to direct, so a spot in a nice, bright room away from direct rays should be perfect. Tabletops and bookshelves can often be great spots for this. Some succulents will do well on brighter windowsills, but always be sure to check them for any signs of scorching.

Tip #3: Re-pot your succulents every year

Like many plants, succulents will do better if they are re-potted occasionally—once a year should be perfect. This allows them to continue growing without sacrificing the root structure. As for how to re-pot, Uncommon Goods has some advice:

Before introducing your plants to their new home give the bottom of the existing dirts/roots a bit of a scrunch. Flare the root structure out a bit. This will help it transition better into its new/bigger/better environment. This is something good to remember when planting anything anywhere. If you don’t break up the bundle they are used to having in their temporary store shells, they might be a little too shy to branch out (pun intended) into their new world.

Tip #4: Don’t worry too much about temperature!

Many people think that it’s important to keep succulents in constantly hot temperatures, but in fact, they can withstand cool temperatures above freezing. Since their native desert environments often grow cold at night, your indoor succulent garden should be more than able to survive both during hot summers and during the winter and at evening, when your indoor temperature may drop a bit.

Succulents are a great choice for adding a fresh look to your apartment, deck, or backyard. Nothing brightes up a space like a bit of living color.  Over at Starbright Floral Design will be more than happy to work with you on creating a great succulent arrangement that you can care for easily.

December Birth Flower: Poinsettia

Poinsettias and Christmas seem to go together like peas and carrots.  This association hasn’t always been the case.  Its roots stem from Mexican legend.  As legend has it, a child who could not afford a proper gift to offer the Christ child on Christmas Eve was left to pick weeds from the roadside. The child was told that any gift given in earnest and with love is valued in God’s eyes. When the child placed the weeds onto the church altar, they miraculously bloomed into a poinsettia with its bright red flowers.

Poinsettias are native to southern Mexico and Central America, where they may reach heights of sixteen feet. They are named after the first United States ambassador to Mexico, Dr. Joel Roberts Poinsett.  A physician, politician and an avid amateur botanist, Dr. Poinsett sent samples of the plants to the U.S. in 1825 and by 1836 the plant had become commonly known as the poinsettia.

The Aztec Indians prized poinsettias (pronounced oohahargh-do in their native tongue) and considered them a symbol of purity because of their brilliant red color.  The Aztecs made a reddish dye from the flowers of the poinsettia.  They also made a medicine said to fight  fevers from the sap of the plant.  One common myth of the plant is that its sap is poisonous.  Although not tasty, it has not been found to be poisonous.

Today every festive holiday party is sure to contain the popular plant.  Its brilliant colors are sure to brighten any venue.

November Birth Flower: Chrysanthemums, flower with an identity crisis…

Chrysanthemums were first cultivated in China as a flowering herb in the 15th Century BC.  The flower was brought to Japan in the 8th Century and the Emperor adopted the flower as his official seal.  The flower was brought to Europe in the 17th Century and named from the Greek for “Gold Flower”, a reflection of its original color.

The Chrysanthemum - November Flower....

These days the flowers come in various forms and can be daisy-like, decorative pompons, or buttons.  In addition to the traditional yellow, other colors are available such as white, purple and red.

In the United States, Chrysanthemums are identified as cheerful holiday flowers.  Fall arrangements and Thanksgiving Day Flowers in NYC and throughout the country incorporate Chrysanthemums in their decor.  However, many European countries (France, Italy, Spain, Hungary and Croatia) have identified Chrysanthemums with death.  Accordingly, their use in floral arrangements is limited to funerals or on graves.

Other Uses:

Be sure to bring Chrysanthemums with you when taking a walk in the jungle.  The flower is considered a natural source as an insect repellent.  The Pyrethins when extracted and applied on the skin in an oil suspension or as a powder can be lethal to insects such as mosquitoes.  The Chinese have used the flower for its antiseptic and antibiotic qualities for centuries.
