In Honor of Mothers

We are all someone’s child. Each one of us was nourished, protected and loved when we were too tiny to do anything for ourselves. Someone watched over us, guided us as we took our first steps and giggled with us as we tried new foods.

Some moms, some wonderful women, we were born to. Some of our mothers found us, already born but longing to be someone’s child. And some moms live forever in our memories. The tie that binds all of these mothers, these women, these pillars of strength and inspiration, is that they are extraordinary.

Every one of us is incredibly fortunate to have a mother; she who first loved us, smiled at us, and celebrated each milestone. We all have one and we only have one mother, by our side in person or in memory, special and unique — utterly ours. There’s nothing like the love between a mother and a child, that bond that can move mountains and cross oceans, that love that runs deep, changing and growing, yet always there.

Our mothers are our greatest inspiration.

When we reflect on what mothers have done for all of us throughout our lives, we are awestruck. From the love and attention they showered upon each of us to the guidance and patience they showed us as the years went on, we’re forever grateful to our mothers, those amazing women who dedicated their entire lives for our being.  Who but a mother will put a child’s welfare above her own, giving so much of herself and expect nothing in return? Mothers are our superheroes.

Sometimes the work of mothers can be overlooked or forgotten — the millions of little things that they do each and every day to make our world run smoothly and our days easier. From packing lunches, cleaning up the spills, reminding us about important dates or having us make peace with our siblings (even though they started it!), to us at Starbright mothers are the living embodiment of unconditional love. And where would we be without love?

If we are lucky, we have her wisdom and fortitude. If we are luckier still, we have her by our side. And while honoring our mothers every day is a joy and a delight to us at Starbright, Mother’s Day is the perfect occasion to celebrate her even more.

A mother’s love is like nothing else in the world.

For our love of mothers everywhere, we’ve created a new section on the Starbright website for Mother’s Day that is overflowing with festive florals. We realize that there’s nothing sweeter than a child saying, “I love you,” to their mom, but hope that these blooms help illustrate to your mom that she is cherished beyond words and that her presence in your life has been a blessing. Flowers are but a small honor for a person who has dedicated their entire life for our being.

We’re delighted to have a pop-up shop now through Sunday in the Lord & Taylor at 424 Fifth Avenue to make your Mother’s Day a little bit brighter. And of course, we always love to see our adored friends and clients at our flower and plant emporium at 140 West 26th Street to make gifts for their moms that much more personalized.

Come visit us at our pop-up shop at Lord & Taylor for a beautiful bouquet for your own adored mom!

Our mothers always celebrated our victories and soothed us when we lost. Our mothers loved us first and they will always love us best. We relish showering our moms with flowers on Mother’s Day, and if we can be of assistance, it would be our great honor craft a beautiful bouquet for your mom.

Of course, there are a million ways to celebrate Mother’s Day and whether it is with perfectly curated blooms or in some other way, we hope you have a wonderful time making your mom feel incredibly special and loved this Mother’s Day — and every day!

Summer of Love

San Francisco in 1967 was a place to behold. With over 100,000 people coming to the city to celebrate the Summer of Love, city officials worried about having the capacity to host everyone. Now, 50 years later, the San Francisco Travel Office is ready to do it again.

The 50th Anniversary of the Summer of Love is a wonderful opportunity to visit (or revisit!) that magical time in our history when the flower children converged in San Francisco to rally for peace and prosperity in our world. The first event of its kind, the Summer of Love became ubiquitous with San Francisco, helped in no small part by the song written by The Mamas & the Papa’s called “San Francisco: Wear Flowers in Your Hair”.

Starbright’s garden wall was the perfect place to stop for a photo.

Wearing flowers in our hair is one of our favorite things to do at Starbright, so of course the Summer of Love is near and dear to our heart. The San Francisco Travel Office has planned a plethora of activities to commemorate the extraordinary Summer of Love and of course, to celebrate the flower children, there will be flowers! To kick off the festivities in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love, the San Francisco Travel Office had a reception and cocktail hour that we were only too delighted to beflower. Mayor Ed Lee of San Francisco in attendance and addressed the crowd.

Mayor Ed Lee came to the Summer of Love evening and we were thrilled to see him!

To help guests feel the vibe, Starbright crafted a flower bar that was called Flower Child Creations with headbands and flower jewelry to make the evening more reminiscent of all those years ago in gorgeous San Francisco. With lovely flower garlands available for every guest, Starbright designers combined daisies with all imaginable wildflowers of the period to capture the free spirit of the Summer of Love. Our own Nic Faitos and Julie McGonigle dressed as hippies and let down their long, long hair.

Nic Faitos and Julie McGonigle brought the flower power to the event.

A stunning garden wall was a centerpiece for the event, with verdant greens and lush flowers anchoring the piece. Starbright’s whimsical designers created a vibrant peace sign out of fresh carnations in cheerful yellow and lovely fuchsia while other blooms danced merrily in the backdrop of the garden wall. Single, voluptuous roses in a vase graced the tables, as did spritely gerber daisies and pansies paired with field daisies.

…And the band played on, with great music to serenade everyone on this wonderful evening.

Of course, to honor the Summer of Love, there had to be tie-dye involved and the reception for the San Francisco Travel Office was awash in a sea of rainbows. With a tie-dyed table cloth setting off our Flower Child Creations table that was filled with flowers for guests to make their own compositions and tie-dyed clothes wrapped around the microphones of the band, the 60’s were in the air.

Our Flower Child Creations table was awash in flowers, just waiting to be curated by the evening’s guests.

As one of our favorites, Jimmy Hendrix so wisely said, “When the power of love overcomes the love of power the word will know peace.”

Groovy glasses and VW vans were paired with Starbright blooms to bring back a bygone era.

And although we aren’t there yet, we believe we’re on the way. We were delighted to have the opportunity to help create a night that was in tribute to the Summer of Love and hope that you can make it to stunning San Francisco to celebrate the return of that iconic moment in time. We’ll see you there!

We Love Cherry Blossoms in the Springtime!

Is there anything more delightful than cherry blossoms to celebrate the arrival of spring? At Starbright, we cherish this time of year when those beautiful blooms open up to announce that finally, finally…we are witnessing the glorious rebirth of spring!

Cherry blossoms bountiful blooms make this a breathtaking bouquet!

About 1,300 years ago, people started picnicking under cherry blossoms, and we couldn’t image a more splendid way to spend an afternoon in NYC. Beginning in the Nara Period in Japanese history (710-794) and continuing through today, enjoying the magnificence of these flowers in their peak season is a treasured pastime by anyone who has enjoyed their loveliness.

Today, the Japanese gather to have flower-viewing parties to relish in the cherry blossoms as they arrive each spring and at Starbright, we do too! Our party takes place in our Manhattan flower and plant emporium and it is a celebration of the striking display of blooms that visit us on their way to a new home.

The richness of the cherry blossoms are always a delight.

Cherry blossoms in Japan are deeply symbolic and in New York City they are admired as a harbinger of spring, along with endless elegance. In Japan, the beauty and fragility of the cherry blossoms are seen as metaphors for mortality, as well as for the graceful acceptance of what life hands you, whether that’s an unexpected frost or some cheerful sunshine.

The Brooklyn Botanical Garden in New York City will be celebrating the arrival of cherry blossoms at the end of the month, with their annual Sakura Matsuri festival, where they have over 60 events and performances taking place around cherry blossoms. There are many other celebrations throughout the country to mark the arrival of cherry blossoms, but of course, everyone at Starbright loves to stay close to NYC this time of year. The reason we adore New York City’s cherry blossom festivals, in particular, is that we can’t wait to create a stunning masterpiece out of cherry blossoms once we’ve had the chance to visit a festival and are inspired by the brilliance of nature.

More cherry blossoms together means…more beauty to enjoy!

While cherry blossoms can be eaten in moderation, our favorite way to enjoy them is while they are on fresh branches that can stand tall in elegant vases. Their waving blooms are a source of incredible enjoyment and fascination for us at Starbright, where we relish in the natural beauty of one of nature’s most opulent creations.

Of course, to celebrate the cherry blossom season, the brilliant designers at Starbright have been busy creating masterpieces that highlight the soft pinks and gentle whites of the flowers. We adore showcasing them by themselves in Manhattan, as cherry blossoms look incredible on their own. The denseness of each bloom delightfully weighs down the tree bough they are on, giving the entire composition of cherry blossoms a look of rich lushness that’s impossible to resist.

The natural weaving of the branches makes each cherry blossom bouquet uniquely perfect.

We hope as always, that you have the opportunity to enjoy the cherry blossoms in full bloom in a park or festival near you. The renewal of spring is a time of year that everyone at Starbright cherishes — and hope you do, too!

If you’re finding yourself in need of cherry blossoms to lighten up your life, everyone at Starbright is ready to bring this luscious flower into your life! We would love to beflower your home and office with these dazzling seasonal flowers and are just waiting for your call!

Peonies Coming Soon!!!

Is there anything more richly glamorous or lushly romantic than the overflowing blossoms of peonies? Although our plant and flower emporium in New York City is abounding with endless options, peonies are the spring flower that our designers always swoon over. With peony season right around the corner, we wanted to give our beloved friends and clients the inside scoop on the flower that sets all of our hearts at Starbright aflutter.

The gradation of shades for peonies and their incredible petals are stunning.

Adored throughout New York City as one of the most romantic flowers (inspired, perhaps by their ubiquitous presence in the NYC-based Gossip Girl tv show), peonies are also one of the longest-used flowers in Eastern cultures. Known as the “flowers of riches and honor” in China, the bloom has been crowned the “King of Flowers” in Japan, and it is easy to see why. Their unique and stunning beauty can leave anyone breathless, in bunches or as a single, perfect bloom.

Indeed, the history of peonies is as rich and varied as their blossoms. There are many wonderful myths about peonies and the origin of the flower. One of our favorites is that there was once a beautiful nymph named Paeonia, who Apollo flirted with. When Paeonia realized that Aphrodite was watching them, she flushed and Aphrodite turned her into a peony, imbuing the flower with bashfulness. Why Aphrodite turned Paeonia into a flower, we aren’t sure — but we are thrilled to have peonies as one of our most cherished blooms in New York City!

Peonies make dazzling bouquets and are sure to delight the even the most discerning.

Peonies have long been associated with health and prosperity, so long, in fact, that water would be infused with the petals of peonies and drunk in the Middle Ages. Today, the petals are added to salads or beverages to add an unexpected, delightful floral essence. In England, children used to wear the root of the peony around their necks to ward off pain from teething. Peony seeds used to be swallowed to fend off nightmares, and while we hope it helped, we would imagine that a garden filled with peonies would do that, as well!

The generous bloom can range in size anywhere from 2 – 10 inches. While we must admit that we adore peonies when they are on the larger end of the spectrum, there is something particularly enchanting about the smaller peonies and how they infuse a bouquet with their precious intricacy.

The bright fuchsia in a peony is magical.

Peonies are like no other flower to be found anywhere in New York City. The depth and variation of their hues alone are enough to make Starbright’s designers wax poetic all season long. Traditional peonies range in color from the purest white to soft pinks, charming rose-colored and decadent reds. Today, we’re seeing an expansion of color offerings, including the endlessly fascinating coral, rich purples, deep mahogany and happy yellows. While we love all of the tints of colors that peonies come in, there is something so classically beautiful about peonies in pink that will always take our breath away.

Pink peonies are always among our favorites, though all of the colors are gorgeous!

We are thrilled to announce that with the start of peony season, there will be a new and dynamic section of the Starbright website that will be catering specifically to your peony whims. Of course, we’ll keep you updated on these exciting developments and hope that as peonies begin to bloom, so will your adoration of these truly incredible flowers.

Bidding Adieu to Valentine’s…for now!

You’ll forgive us, dear reader (we hope!) if we linger on the holiday of love for just a bit longer…

We admit, at Starbright there’s nothing like the language of love expressed through perfectly curated blooms and Valentine’s Day is one of our most favorite times of year in New York City. The love! The passion! The artful ways lovers choose to celebrate their special union. At Starbright, our hearts are set aflutter just reminiscing about all the wonderful touches our romantic Romeos — and Juliets — added to their bouquets to express their adoration this year in New York City.

InStyle

InStyle magazine was on-hand at Starbright’s NYC flower and plant emporium for this year’s Valentine’s Day to chat with some of the gentlemen who came to pay us a call. Terming them “hot guys” — and who are we to argue — InStyle captured the bouquets these intrepid New Yorkers had crafted for their love, along with the story on why those particular flowers were chosen. Ranging from decadent red roses to intricate wildflowers and lilies, there was a huge variety of flowers that these New York men chose, but no matter the request, Starbright was ready to fulfill their floral dreams.

InStyle said, "Alex (24) who gets flowers for his lady once a week got a large bouquet of red roses for Valentine's Day. He says getting flowers for her is a fresh display of his love for her." -- photo by egozdes@gmail.com

Starbright had some bashful and some proud gentlemen having beautiful bouquets crafted for their loves in NYC, all doubtlessly tickled to be identified as a “hot guy” by the discerning and distinguished InStyle “hot guy” judge. Of course, Starbright was only too happy to provide the background in New York City for the sweet interviews and hope to see these gentlemen callers again soon.

CBS

At Starbright, we were thrilled to see that CBS was airing information on how to get the most bang for your buck when it comes to flowers. It can sometimes be confusing to figure out how to make the biggest statement with flowers in New York City, but with this segment airing all over the country, everyone at Starbright is hopeful that the viewers were able to capitalize on the tricks and tips that CBS offered to get the best bouquet of flowers possible, while staying in budget.

Starbright's Be Still My Heart bouquet is composed of lush roses and lilies that would make anyone swoon.

In prior years, Starbright has been honored to be visited by CBS to talk about flowers for Valentine’s Day in NYC. It is one of Starbright’s great delights to help our New York City friends and clients convey their sentiments through flowers and we strive to always surpass expectations. Talking with news outlets like CBS helps Starbright spread our message of how wonderfully flowers can convey every sentiment, no matter how big or small a budget might be.

Although it is great regret that we say adieu to Valentine’s Day 2017, it does mean that the calendar is filled with upcoming holidays and celebrations all throughout New York City. Everyone at Starbright is ready to beflower all of Manhattan. With St. Patty’s Day on the horizon and the delicious color of Greenery being selected by Pantone for color of the year, Starbright’s brilliant designers are already dreaming of the masterpieces they can create. If we didn’t see you for Valentine’s Day, we missed you and do hope that you’ll stop by soon!

The Language of Love

Showering your love with flowers in New York City is a tradition that stretches back through time. Flowers can express loyalty, devotion, love, adoration and so much more, which makes Valentine’s Day one of the holidays that everyone at Starbright looks forward to with great joy. A day filled with flowers is Starbright’s kind of celebration, and we relish our small part in bringing lovers together in NYC as they enjoy this wonderful day.

So how to best tell your love with flowers, “I adore thee,”? Everyone at Starbright always makes sure to suggest the following, before venturing toward other flowers: if your amour has a favorite flower, go with that! There is nothing more romantic than showing your love that you listen to him or her throughout the year and know precious details about them. So whether it’s pansies or tulips, sunflowers or succulents, everyone at Starbright is ready to make your love’s dream in flowers come true.

Romance is in the tiny details of life.
Romance is in the tiny details of life.

But fear not, brave Valentine! If you haven’t yet learned the flower that sets your love’s heart aflutter in Manhattan, the brilliant Starbright artisan florists can make some flowery magic for you. After over two decades in New York City, we have developed a few suggestions on what flowers perfectly convey the language of love on Valentine’s Day.

“A rose by another other name would smell as sweet,” Juliet murmured in regard to her star-crossed love, Romeo — and she’s right! The name of the rose does not create the splendor of the scent, but it does evoke for everyone in New York City a classic beauty that always delights. There’s no better time of year for Starbright’s Love and Devotion bouquet of two dozen red roses. Richly colored and at the height of ripeness, these two dozen roses are a decadent Valentine’s Day treat for your sweetheart.

Starbright’s Love and Devotion bouquet make a stunning statement.

If roses are red and violets are blue, we’d bet that orchids will delight you, too! Starbright’s NYC Orchid Passion marries the vibrancy of fresh orchids with the soft allure of beautiful hydrangea, coupled with darts of pure tulip glory. This gorgeous composition created by Starbright’s floral artists in Manhattan is an excellent choice for a discerning special somebody who is looking for some variety in their blooms. Available for local delivery in New York City, Starbright’s NYC Orchid Passion may end up becoming yours!

Orchids made a bold statement of adoration.

Luscious white flowers are another exquisite choice for your Valentine. The snowy pearlescence of Starbright’s miniature, languid calla lilies look lovely in their crystal vase. Nestled on a throne of glassy pebbles, Starbright’s Blanco Calla Tango combines these features into an enchanted floral composition that is sure to thrill your Valentine.

Starbright's Blaco Calla Tango will send your love over the moon!

As fun as flowers are, everyone at Starbright knows that the true meaning of Valentine’s Day is letting your Valentine know just how much you adore them. So whether through flowers or poems written on napkins in coffee shops in NYC, we hope you and your Valentine have a fabulous time…being together. Happy Valentine’s Day from all of us at Starbright!

The Allure of Amaryllis

What is sometimes forgotten because of Amaryllis’ beauty, is the lore behind one of Starbright’s treasured flowers. Greek legend tells us that Amaryllis was once a beautiful, though bashful, nymph. And though she didn’t live in New York City, she was familiar to all of us as she fell deeply in love. Amaryllis loved Alteo, a shepherd who had Hercules’ strength and Apollo’s fetching facade (rumor has it that he was quite foxy).

Gorgeous Amaryllis has a wonderful Greek legend to go along with its beauty.
Gorgeous Amaryllis has a wonderful Greek legend to go along with its beauty.

Amaryllis longed to give Alteo the one thing he desired most: a flower that had never existed in the world before. But not knowing how to do this, Amaryllis sought guidance from the Oracle of Delphi. The Oracle told Amaryllis to go to Alteo’s door each night and to pierce her heart with a golden arrow upon every visit. Alteo finally opened the door after 30 nights to behold Amaryllis and the flowers that the blood of her heart created; a singular kind of flower never seen before.

Crimson Amaryllis was said to have sprung from the love of a nymph.

Today, there are easier ways to entice your own true love in New York City! As unique as golden arrows piercing hearts sounds, there’s no need to follow Amaryllis’s dramatic endeavors in Manhattan. Instead, consider sending some Amaryllis to that special person you love in NYC and woo them by sharing this tale.

It’s true that everyone at Starbright adores everything that we have in our overflowing NYC flower and plant emporium. And while each florist has their own favorite flower, there’s nothing that we all love more than a good story to go with a beautiful bloom.

Amaryllis is a fantastic choice to send to someone you love.
Amaryllis is a fantastic choice to send to someone you love.

Amaryllis is one such flower that is beloved in New York City and beyond, and it’s easy to see why. With stunning petals that come in a variety of vivid hues, including purples, pinks, whites and crimson reds, Amaryllis stands out in every floral composition anywhere in Manhattan.

Amaryllis comes from the Greek work “amarysso” which translates into “to sparkle” and everyone at Starbright is delighted to do our part to spread these flowers far and wide in New York City to dazzle the City. Amaryllis flowers have become known beyond New York City to symbolize pride, determination and lustrous beauty; combined with its rich coloring, it’s no surprise that it has become a seasonal favorite.

August Birth Flowers in NYC: Gladiolus

Gladiolus

Gladiolus has been dubbed the flower of the Gladiators.   It represents strength of character, sincerity, generosity.  In the Victorian age with its secret language of flowers it was said to represent “love at first sight”. Gladiolus derives its name from the latin word for sword and is sometimes called the sword lily.  As a member of the iris family it contains about 260 species.   Only about 10 are native to Europe the rest are native to southern Africa.  The species vary from very small to the spectacular giant flower spikes you see in floral designs. The flower stalk of the Gladiolus contains an extended row of trumpet-shaped, fragrant flowers, all of which face in one direction. Their colors include pink to reddish or light purple with white, contrasting markings, or white to cream or orange to red.

Once upon a time Gladiolus were viewed as an upscale, highly sought after flower but fell into the sympathy arrangement niche.  However, we’ve recently seen a resurgence of the Gladiolus in NYC.    Many upscale restaurants and hotels in NYC have once again incorporated the Gladiolus in their floral decor.

Roses, Roses, Roses: June’s Birth Flower

Roses in NYC are as plentiful as NYC birthdays.  Every year millions of roses are gifted in NYC for any number of occasions.  In June, the appropriate floral gift is the rose as it is June’s birth flower.  Rich in popularity as a symbol of love and romance it hasn’t always been so.   In fact, the rose was first looked upon as a symbol of war.  A civil war that raged on from 1455-1487 between the House of York and the House of Lancaster.   The House of York adopted a white rose, the House of Lancaster was represented by a red rose. The war has been dubbed “The War of the Roses”.  The winner of this war, Tudor Henry VII (The Tudors), merged his Lancastrian rose with the rose of his York bride and thus the creation of the Tudor Rose, the Rose of England.

Roses
Roses, Roses, Roses in NYC

In later years the rose evolved into a form of language creating a secret means of communication between lovers.   In the mid 18th century the wife of the British ambassador in Constantinople described this language in her letters.  Largely due to the publication of her letters after her death, we have the code necessary to decipher the intricate language of roses.  For example if you want to ask your love interest “will you love me?”, send an open white rose.    Want to ask  “Don’t you love me any more?” , send an open yellow rose.      Want to say “I respect and look up to you” then send a bouquet of white roses.   Red roses signify  “forever I Love You”.  However a bouquet of red and white roses state “Together we are one and united”.  Want to declare your attraction to someone but don’t want to go as far as declaring your undying love, then purple roses are the way to go.  Colors alone aren’t enough to deliver the complex messages of love.  In combination with the colors, the number and degree of bloom of the roses have also been assigned meaning.  A dozen roses says  “Be Mine”.   Thirteen roses tells someone we’ll be friends forever.  Three dozen roses expresses “I’m head over heels in love!”.  Six dozen roses or more says “my love for you is limitless”.  In addition to its Victorian assigned message, this last one says “I’m a Starbright Gold club member”!!!.

Regardless of its diverse assigned meanings, the one constant is the rose’s undeniable beauty.  The recipient of a beautiful arrangement of roses is always appreciative.
