Summer of Love

San Francisco in 1967 was a place to behold. With over 100,000 people coming to the city to celebrate the Summer of Love, city officials worried about having the capacity to host everyone. Now, 50 years later, the San Francisco Travel Office is ready to do it again.

The 50th Anniversary of the Summer of Love is a wonderful opportunity to visit (or revisit!) that magical time in our history when the flower children converged in San Francisco to rally for peace and prosperity in our world. The first event of its kind, the Summer of Love became ubiquitous with San Francisco, helped in no small part by the song written by The Mamas & the Papa’s called “San Francisco: Wear Flowers in Your Hair”.

Wearing flowers in our hair is one of our favorite things to do at Starbright, so of course the Summer of Love is near and dear to our heart. The San Francisco Travel Office has planned a plethora of activities to commemorate the extraordinary Summer of Love and of course, to celebrate the flower children, there will be flowers! To kick off the festivities in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love, the San Francisco Travel Office had a reception and cocktail hour that we were only too delighted to beflower. Mayor Ed Lee of San Francisco in attendance and addressed the crowd.

To help guests feel the vibe, Starbright crafted a flower bar that was called Flower Child Creations with headbands and flower jewelry to make the evening more reminiscent of all those years ago in gorgeous San Francisco. With lovely flower garlands available for every guest, Starbright designers combined daisies with all imaginable wildflowers of the period to capture the free spirit of the Summer of Love. Our own Nic Faitos and Julie McGonigle dressed as hippies and let down their long, long hair.

A stunning garden wall was a centerpiece for the event, with verdant greens and lush flowers anchoring the piece. Starbright’s whimsical designers created a vibrant peace sign out of fresh carnations in cheerful yellow and lovely fuchsia while other blooms danced merrily in the backdrop of the garden wall. Single, voluptuous roses in a vase graced the tables, as did spritely gerber daisies and pansies paired with field daisies.

…And the band played on, with great music to serenade everyone on this wonderful evening.

Of course, to honor the Summer of Love, there had to be tie-dye involved and the reception for the San Francisco Travel Office was awash in a sea of rainbows. With a tie-dyed table cloth setting off our Flower Child Creations table that was filled with flowers for guests to make their own compositions and tie-dyed clothes wrapped around the microphones of the band, the 60’s were in the air.

As one of our favorites, Jimmy Hendrix so wisely said, “When the power of love overcomes the love of power the word will know peace.”

Groovy glasses and VW vans were paired with Starbright blooms to bring back a bygone era.

And although we aren’t there yet, we believe we’re on the way. We were delighted to have the opportunity to help create a night that was in tribute to the Summer of Love and hope that you can make it to stunning San Francisco to celebrate the return of that iconic moment in time. We’ll see you there!

Starbright at the Hotel Excellence Awards!

Starbright Floral Design was thrilled to be invited to be a sponsor for this year’s Hotel Excellence Awards (HEA), held in New York City. Starbright has always looked forward to the HEA, which we’ve been a sponsor of since the award ceremony began, in 2000. One of Manhattan’s many prestigious annual galas, the HEA honors those who serve the hotel industry and everyone at Starbright was only too happy to lend a hand…and some flowers!

Hosted by Where IN New York with the New York Association of Hotel Concierges and the Hotel Association of New York City, Inc, this night was an exciting and unique chance to showcase some of Starbright’s most decadent floral designs.

Starbright had the honor of being invited to be a sponsor of the Hotel Excellence Awards.

As the coveted floral designer among hotel concierges since Starbright’s founding in 1994, we wanted to give back to our friends and clients by helping to create an evening they’d always remember, filled with fantastic flowers and beautiful blooms.

We used this festive occasion to showcase our towering verdant orchids, that have a playful touch of fuchsia to tickle the senses. Ensconced in a tall crystal vase, these orchid blooms are always a hit, and we’re elated to report that they had that exact response at the Hotel Excellence Awards in NYC.

Representing us at this distinguished event were Stephen Faitos, Senior Vice-President at Starbright, along with Julie McGonigle, our Special Events Architect. They had the opportunity to meet and mingle with some of New York City’s best and brightest in the hotel industry, while having a wonderful time.

Stephen and Julie had a chance to chat with Adeline Tafuri Jurecja, the publisher of Where and IN New York Magazine, and a dear friend of Starbright. Seeing Adeline in person in Manhattan is always a treat for everyone at Starbright and Stephen and Julie loved catching up with her. Stephen and Julie also had the opportunity to see old friends at the Hotel Excellence Awards, with whom lifelong friendships have been forged.

Stephen was selected by the Hotel Excellence Awards to present the award for Best Hotel Amenities this year, and he was delighted to be on hand to do so. This year, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel received the honor; this is a category that everyone at Starbright is always intrigued to see who will win and we are overjoyed that the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in NYC was selected. We’re excited to see who wins next year in New York City!

Starbright in the Dutch News!

Over the ocean and through the woods, do Starbright’s flowers journey; a long trip that finishes by the blooms landing in New York City. We have been delighted to source Starbright’s decadent blooms in NYC from Holland for over two decades. We were tickled when two publications in Holland wanted to feature Starbright and the floral work we do in Manhattan — of course we said yes!

Starbright was honored to be featured in two Dutch floral magazines.

Starbright was featured in two Dutch trade journals for professional growers of flowers and plants. Starbright’s own Nic Faitos, senior partner and flower-cultivator-extraordinaire, was interviewed to share some insight on how and why Starbright chooses Dutch flowers when there are less expensive options available.

Nic said it best when he mentioned, “There are cheaper options, but not better ones.”

As our beloved friends and clients know, Starbright never compromises on quality. There are a lot of florists in NYC and we are grateful that Starbright has been able to create our own niche in the floral world of Manhattan. One of the ways that Starbright has been able to do that is by always focusing on quality and ensuring that our clients always receive the best flowers available.

The Dutch trade magazines noted that Starbright uses flowers from Holland to adorn “…lobbies of hotels like Park Avenue, events at the New York University, the yearly Peter Stuyvesant Gala and the penthouses of celebrities.”

We were thrilled for Starbright to be interviewed by Dutch trade journals.

And it’s true! One of the ways we love to express ourselves is through Dutch flowers. As Nic mentioned to the trade journals from Holland, Dutch flowers are heartier and larger, they are of better quality and last longer than flowers from other countries. Starbright loves Dutch flowers so much, it’s one of the ways that we differentiate ourselves from other florists in NYC; we even mention our dedication to Dutch flowers through our social media platforms, which we adore.

“Even after airline transport – either on water or in carton boxes – the Dutch quality is incomparable,” Nic said.

Nic Faitos spoke with the trade publications on behalf of Starbright.

Starbright is able to serve the very discerning upper corporate segment of the NYC market by almost exclusively using Dutch flowers. One of the flowers that Starbright needs to source elsewhere are chrysanthemums, which are banned from import into New York City and the rest of America.

Starbright was thrilled that Nic had the opportunity to mention that we enjoy hosting Flower Power Happy Hours for our clients, when all of Starbright’s flowers are half price on certain days and times, and Starbright’s recent participation in the Petal it Forward initiative in Manhattan. Hark! An Angel Sings…

Starbright Floral Design counts itself lucky in that we have so many stellar floral designers who have joined our growing team over our more than 20 years in providing the best and brightest blooms for New York City. Nsombi Woodson is one of those gifted designers and she has some incredible ideas for decadent holiday decor to share with all of our friends in NYC!

Based in Manhattan and with over 16 years of experience, Nsombi excels at creating gorgeous floral creations. Nsombi’s draws her inspiration from the lush outdoors, loving to incorporate some whimsy and playfulness with her NYC floral decor that leaves everyone wanting more.

Nsombi brightens every bouquet of flowers!

Nsombi’s professional background includes extensive experience in the event world in New York City. Her floral creations for Starbright reflect her ability to create beauty out of seemingly disparate objects, bringing them together to create harmony and a lasting impression.

Nsombi prefers to work with Dutch flowers. Holland flowers are of the highest quality and while there are blooms that cost less from other parts of the world, nobody can even come close to the quality of flowers that come from Holland.

Having joined the Starbright team in Manhattan almost two years ago, Nsombi has some wonderful ideas on how to make sure your holiday decor pops. A favorite design tip that Nsombi uses time and time again in NYC is to seek out unusual vessels for your flowers. By using unexpected items, like a water pitcher or gravy dishes, you’ll delight your New York City guests and make a lovely visual impact.

One of Nsombi’s favorite elements to add to holiday decor are bunches of herbs. Surprising, economical and delicious in scent, herbs can be grouped together in bunches and scattered throughout your home. Nsombi recommends using rosemary or mint on the dinner table to create a festive and fragrant ambiance.

In speaking of scents, Nsombi recommends staying away from overly strong floral fragrances at the dinner table in Manhattan. Instead of placing aromatic flowers like paperwhites where there will be feasting in NYC, maybe keep them in a powder room so the scent doesn’t interfere with the food.

Nsombi noticed that sometimes, in the quest to bring beauty to a setting, New Yorkers will over-complicate their floral arrangements. Keeping flowers simple and elegant, like having one bloom in a tea cup, scattered throughout your Manhattan home, will allow the charm of the decor to shine through.

Nsombi recommends using the highest quality flowers available to make a stunning impact.

Another way to add a stunning element to your holiday decor is by bringing the outside…in! Try to find some tree branches, tree bark, evergreen clipping from your Christmas tree or pinecones and arranging them around your home. For extra sparkle, consider layering these items with a dusting of gold or glitter spray paint (but make sure to do so outside!).

There are other ways to enliven your holiday decor in New York City that are fun and fast to do. Adding faux snow — or “flocking” as it’s know in the NYC floral industry — to create a wintery look is an easy ways to heighten the drama without breaking the bank.

Behind the Scenes at Starbright

With Starbright Floral Design out and about at events in New York City every day, we wanted to share with our dear friends how the magic is made. Founded 22 years ago in NYC, Starbright started out with the mission to be the greatest florist in the City that Never Sleeps. Over two decades later, we can say with great happiness that we are still chasing that dream every day, and are honored to work with over 200 concierges in Manhattan who heartily recommend us to their guests and clients.

But where do we craft our intricate designs, and who are the elves that create the magic in our New York City flagship shop? We wanted to throw back the curtain and introduce our incredible floral designers, who we think are the best in the business.

Starbright Floral Design has 17 designers working full-time to create lush, floral masterpieces. Our staff of over 70 people ensures that each flower delivery gets to just the right place and is always on time. Our days are busy and overflowing with flowers because we have an average of 250 floral deliveries going out each day in addition to being the florist for an average of 6 events each day. Starbright is having its best year yet and it is also our 22nd year of consecutive growth. We’re thrilled that we get to bedeck Manhattan in flowers and wanted to share what we’ve been up to recently.

The events where Starbright’s floral creations appear vary from black tie galas and fundraisers to celebrating a 111th birthday at the Pierre Hotel. We were delighted to beflower Fashion Week in NYC this year and of course, we love our work as a corporate florist.

One of our upcoming events is for a law firm client who requested that Starbright enhance the United Nations Delegates Dining Room for a private meeting. Later this week we will be collaborating with Macy’s Herald Square in NYC to provide blooms as they start to prepare for the holiday season crush.

While Starbright is delighted to be the florist for incredibly elegant and festive events in Manhattan, one of our priorities is always giving back to our community in New York City. This week we are proud to be a sponsor for the 31st Annual Gala of Answer the Call at Cipriani, which provides assistance to the widows and children of first responders of NYC.

Additionally, we were honored to have been called on by the American Red Cross to fill the Museum of Natural History with flowers for the 2016 Gala, Heroes Among Us.

The Starbright Team – Barbara

We spent some time recently getting to know the office staff of Starbright NYC. Today, we’d like to introduce you to a special office member who also holds it down on the design table – Barbara:

How many years have you been working at Starbright? Can you mention something about when you started?

[Barbara Mele] I’ve been here since 2009, so five years. I started as a freelancer, to assist with one of Starbright’s biggest and most beautiful weddings ever. It was at the Brooklyn Museum of Art.

What is you position at Starbright?

[Barbara Mele] Design and Events Manager

If you take sales calls, what is your favorite advice to give the undecided client looking for a (1) romantic arrangement or (2) something to give to a guy or (3) in general.

[Barbara Mele] 1) People have varying ideas of “romantic”- it isn’t always red roses! So it is good to discuss a little bit what kind of romantic they have in mind. Classic? Modern? Soft? Then use those descriptives to shape the design and what varieties are involved. 2) For guys, you can not go wrong with primary colors. You don’t necessarily have to use red, blue AND yellow- it can be only two of those- but try to break up red and yellow with some green or orange, so it doesn’t look ketchup and mustard. 3) Even the most indecisive client has an idea of what they want, you just have to help them find it. A designer can take her cues by asking about the recipient or sender’s favorite color, flower, season, holiday, adjective, place to visit…there are so many sources of inspiration!

What’s your favorite flower? color?

[Barbara Mele] I have many, many favorites. A long time favorite has been lily of the valley. My favorite color is Orange.

What’s your favorite floral style?

[Barbara Mele] Gardeny, wild.

Name one thing you love about working at Starbright.

[Barbara Mele] It is definitely a family here.

What languages are you able to speak with clients?

[Barbara Mele] English and Spanish, a very few words of Greek, haha.

WOULD YOU RATHER…

Coffee or Tea?

[Barbara Mele] Coffee unless I’m sick, then tea. In winter, I drink tons of both.

Go to the theater or a movie?

[Barbara Mele] I love the theatre, but don’t often have a chance, or am able, to drag someone to go with me. So, movies.

Sesame seeds or poppy seeds?

[Barbara Mele] Why not both?

Pop or Soda?

[Barbara Mele] Neither. Seltzer! : )

The Starbright Team – Costas

We figured it was time to let you get to know some of the people who work in our office – operating the day to day activities in our client support, as well as making sure the flowers get where they’re going. Today, we’d like to introduce you to Costas:

How many years have you been working at Starbright? Can you mention something about when you started?

My relationship with Starbright goes back in the late 1990’s, when the company was in its very early stages. There was a period of absence of some years and a reunification six years ago – we had such a good time arranging Carmine’s restaurant with Christmas décor.

What is your position at Starbright?

Operations Coordinator

What is your favorite advice to give an undecided client?

Leave it to our design team to produce a unique floral design appropriate for the occasion.

What’s your favorite flower? Color?

I like the Anemone flower. And I prefer the color orange when it’s an option – lucky for me, the anemone flower comes in lost of colors – including orange.

What’s your favorite floral style?

Balanced floral, modern or traditional.

Name one thing you love about working at Starbright.

The Starbright Team – George B

We figured it was time to let you get to know some of the people who work in our office – operating the day to day activities in our client support, as well as making sure the flowers get where they’re going. Today, we’d like to introduce you to George B:

How many years have you been working at Starbright? Can you mention something about when you started?

This is my fifth year here at SFD. I had moved back to NY in January of 2010 and was sending out applications to colleges in the city and working here part time. I ended up being accept to CUNY’s Hunter College the following year, to pursue my degree in Economics and I’ve been going to school full time and working full time ever since! Sounds like fun right? J

What is your position at Starbright?

Currently, I’ve been working closely with our Senior Partner, Nic, to increase our overall sales by strengthening existing client relationships and developing new ones. You could say I’m a sales manager of sorts. Nic is a phenomenal mentor and he has, quite literally, built our brand single handedly over the course of two decades. We are now working together to bring exceptional service and quality flowers to as many people as we can.

If you take sales calls, what is your favorite advice to give the unsure client?

Overall, I generally recommend simply leaving it to our creative team to do something appropriate for the occasion. It’s really amazing to see what they can do when you just give them a theme to work with.
