Peonies Coming Soon!!!

Is there anything more richly glamorous or lushly romantic than the overflowing blossoms of peonies? Although our plant and flower emporium in New York City is abounding with endless options, peonies are the spring flower that our designers always swoon over. With peony season right around the corner, we wanted to give our beloved friends and clients the inside scoop on the flower that sets all of our hearts at Starbright aflutter.

The gradation of shades for peonies and their incredible petals are stunning.

Adored throughout New York City as one of the most romantic flowers (inspired, perhaps by their ubiquitous presence in the NYC-based Gossip Girl tv show), peonies are also one of the longest-used flowers in Eastern cultures. Known as the “flowers of riches and honor” in China, the bloom has been crowned the “King of Flowers” in Japan, and it is easy to see why. Their unique and stunning beauty can leave anyone breathless, in bunches or as a single, perfect bloom.

Indeed, the history of peonies is as rich and varied as their blossoms. There are many wonderful myths about peonies and the origin of the flower. One of our favorites is that there was once a beautiful nymph named Paeonia, who Apollo flirted with. When Paeonia realized that Aphrodite was watching them, she flushed and Aphrodite turned her into a peony, imbuing the flower with bashfulness. Why Aphrodite turned Paeonia into a flower, we aren’t sure — but we are thrilled to have peonies as one of our most cherished blooms in New York City!

Peonies make dazzling bouquets and are sure to delight the even the most discerning.

Peonies have long been associated with health and prosperity, so long, in fact, that water would be infused with the petals of peonies and drunk in the Middle Ages. Today, the petals are added to salads or beverages to add an unexpected, delightful floral essence. In England, children used to wear the root of the peony around their necks to ward off pain from teething. Peony seeds used to be swallowed to fend off nightmares, and while we hope it helped, we would imagine that a garden filled with peonies would do that, as well!

The generous bloom can range in size anywhere from 2 – 10 inches. While we must admit that we adore peonies when they are on the larger end of the spectrum, there is something particularly enchanting about the smaller peonies and how they infuse a bouquet with their precious intricacy.

The bright fuchsia in a peony is magical.

Peonies are like no other flower to be found anywhere in New York City. The depth and variation of their hues alone are enough to make Starbright’s designers wax poetic all season long. Traditional peonies range in color from the purest white to soft pinks, charming rose-colored and decadent reds. Today, we’re seeing an expansion of color offerings, including the endlessly fascinating coral, rich purples, deep mahogany and happy yellows. While we love all of the tints of colors that peonies come in, there is something so classically beautiful about peonies in pink that will always take our breath away.

Pink peonies are always among our favorites, though all of the colors are gorgeous!

We are thrilled to announce that with the start of peony season, there will be a new and dynamic section of the Starbright website that will be catering specifically to your peony whims. Of course, we’ll keep you updated on these exciting developments and hope that as peonies begin to bloom, so will your adoration of these truly incredible flowers.

The Allure of Amaryllis

What is sometimes forgotten because of Amaryllis’ beauty, is the lore behind one of Starbright’s treasured flowers. Greek legend tells us that Amaryllis was once a beautiful, though bashful, nymph. And though she didn’t live in New York City, she was familiar to all of us as she fell deeply in love. Amaryllis loved Alteo, a shepherd who had Hercules’ strength and Apollo’s fetching facade (rumor has it that he was quite foxy).

Gorgeous Amaryllis has a wonderful Greek legend to go along with its beauty.
Gorgeous Amaryllis has a wonderful Greek legend to go along with its beauty.

Amaryllis longed to give Alteo the one thing he desired most: a flower that had never existed in the world before. But not knowing how to do this, Amaryllis sought guidance from the Oracle of Delphi. The Oracle told Amaryllis to go to Alteo’s door each night and to pierce her heart with a golden arrow upon every visit. Alteo finally opened the door after 30 nights to behold Amaryllis and the flowers that the blood of her heart created; a singular kind of flower never seen before.

Crimson Amaryllis was said to have sprung from the love of a nymph.

Today, there are easier ways to entice your own true love in New York City! As unique as golden arrows piercing hearts sounds, there’s no need to follow Amaryllis’s dramatic endeavors in Manhattan. Instead, consider sending some Amaryllis to that special person you love in NYC and woo them by sharing this tale.

It’s true that everyone at Starbright adores everything that we have in our overflowing NYC flower and plant emporium. And while each florist has their own favorite flower, there’s nothing that we all love more than a good story to go with a beautiful bloom.

Amaryllis is a fantastic choice to send to someone you love.
Amaryllis is a fantastic choice to send to someone you love.

Amaryllis is one such flower that is beloved in New York City and beyond, and it’s easy to see why. With stunning petals that come in a variety of vivid hues, including purples, pinks, whites and crimson reds, Amaryllis stands out in every floral composition anywhere in Manhattan.

Amaryllis comes from the Greek work “amarysso” which translates into “to sparkle” and everyone at Starbright is delighted to do our part to spread these flowers far and wide in New York City to dazzle the City. Amaryllis flowers have become known beyond New York City to symbolize pride, determination and lustrous beauty; combined with its rich coloring, it’s no surprise that it has become a seasonal favorite.

Amaryllis is a great choice for the holidays and beyond.

Flowers and Passion Through Barbara’s Eyes…

On any team, in any company or in any organization people join in every now and then that you “just know” are going to be around for a very long time and will contribute in a super meaningful way… Barbara is just such a person.  Last year we were short-handed for what was the largest wedding production that our organization had ever been involved with.  It took our entire team, plus a freelance group (that Barbara was a part of) to basically decorate the Brooklyn Museum.  That is when we met Barbara and have  not let go since…

Flowers by Starbright...
Flowers, Festivals and Romance

In her own words, life in the wonderful world of flowers –

At ten years, the floral design industry is one of my two longest-lasting relationships, (the other is my husband, who’s been my partner for seven.) Following are a series of brief descriptors of the business.

In a cash and carry shop I worked at, customers were constantly walking in and saying how wonderful the store smelled. I’d smile and agree, and even lead them to the fragrant flowers if they asked, although I’d been in the store long enough that I couldn’t actually smell them anymore. A favored expression in this business is, “hurry up and wait,” meaning that work is not a steady flow; rather, everyone rushes to meet a deadline, or prep to begin work on an event…and then we just hang around for go time. The florally-related holidays, such as Valentine’s, Mother’s Day, Easter, and so on, do produce weeks’ worth of intense work. Sometimes, if a store is lucky, there is more work than even the best-equipped store can handle. Those times generally wear on everyone’s nerves- frazzling coworkers to the point that they want to strangle each other. The hours become long and the amount of work slavish.  These periods are counter balanced by the quiet periods, such as January or midsummer, when customers are traveling, or the calendar is empty of a special occasion which calls for flowers.  Since flowers are generally short-lived, a commodity rather than a necessity, customers also frequently haggle about the price, or the fact that, yes, there is tax on flowers.

How does the floral business sound after the above descriptions? If the job had been described as such, I probably would’ve looked for a job elsewhere before walking into my first interview with a shop. The truth is, however, that I am, and always have been, hopelessly addicted to flowers. My interest was piqued at an early age by my grandmother, who was a landscape architect. But familial dedication isn’t really enough to explain why I’ve returned again and again to the floral business over a decade. Flowers, if you can stop to take a deep breath and appreciate them, are beautiful in themselves. But let’s face it… how many people can stop to smell the roses? This work is worthwhile to me for the good moments, to be found in every day. When an arrangement comes together, it gives a sense of satisfaction that is immediate and complete. When coworkers also find beauty in something you’ve made, it’s an additional bonus. The maximum gratification comes when a customer’s eyes light up at seeing what you’ve made for them. I’ve also been fortunate to work with many excellent people, not least among them the crew at Starbright. (Especially Brian!!!) There are always laughs to be shared, as well as the sense of accomplishment when a large job is completed, at having contributed to a significant moment or event in someone’s life. If I’m waxing too poetic, sometimes there’s satisfaction at simply having gotten through another day, and having managed to create something in the meantime.

An Event Planner’s Prespective on the Weekend..

Over  the years I have  had the honor to know and work with one of the true professionals in the Event Planning and Destination Management industry.   Anthony Napoli of Briggs NYC is a pro’s pro.  He is the go-to person for “everything Manhattan” and “everything beyond”.  His clients are in for a New York City experience like no other!  For more years than I can count on one hand we have had the privilege to be the florist for the events that are organized by Briggs.   Because of Tony and this amazing organization we have decorated at the United Nations, at Ellis Island, at Gotham Hall and countless other landmarks.

Tony has a unique perspective on this weekend and when I received Tony’s February newsletter, I asked him for permission to reprint it on our blog…  (thankfully he said “yes”!) – Apropos of Valentine’s Day, here is Tony’s perspective on what to do this weekend – enjoy!

“The stars have lined up for a multiple holiday weekend this February 12th to the 15th.  The festivities start off on Friday, February 12th the traditional date for celebrating Lincoln’s Birthday (before Congress passed the Monday Holiday Act – of course they left the Fourth of July alone!).  And that evening you can toast Honest Abe while watching the opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Saturday is a major day to celebrate Mardi Gras or as we call it in NYC, Carnevale! Sunday is a double header: Valentine’s Day and Chinese New Year’s – the Year of the Tiger! We can all rest up on Monday, Presidents Day! Happy Birthday George! So get out your patriotic songs, beads and doubloons, fortune cookies and dancing shoes cause it’s all “ashes ashes all fall down” for 40 days of Lent!. What a weekend!”

To learn more about Anthony Napoli and  his amazing team, please visit their website at www.briggsnyc.com.

Roses – Creativity, Style and Love

A Sphere of Black Magic Roses
A lavander phaleonopsis orchid plant
A clutch bouquet of miniature calla lillies

Tom S. is our Creative Director and the Arbiter of Style for Starbright.  Tom sees into the future and keeps our design styles ahead of the curve.  For Valentine’s Day 2010 he has some thoughts to share and has written the article below… Enjoy!

As Valentine’s Day quickly approaches, I stop to ponder Gertrude Stein’s famous quote, “A rose is a rose is a rose.”  During this time of year, our store is inundated with requests for red rose arrangements.  It is not atypical to have over 15,000 long stem red roses in our fridge during the week of Valentine’s Day.  While roses are gorgeous and will always remain a popular declaration of one’s love and devotion, I have to agree with Stein.  A rose really IS a rose.

Luckily, we are prepared with other creative and unique options that should appeal to most couples.  Why limit yourself to a vase of red roses?  During the Valentine season, the price of roses can be shocking.  Our wholesale cost goes up, supplies of the best roses become scarce and customers can see that reflected in the price of a dozen roses.  Instead of roses, consider sending a lush, hand tied nosegay of eggplant colored calla lilies.  With their sculptural shape that has been eroticized by artists such as Georgia O’Keefe and Robert Mapplethorpe, calla lilies should evoke a passionate response from any recipient.

Orchids are another option that will both delight and inspire.  The exotic shapes, textures and colors of the orchid speak to the tropical fantasies of many lovers.  During the winter months, wouldn’t it be wonderful to remind your loved one of your past trip to the islands?  Perhaps the flowers will help to promote a future trip.  One benefit of orchids that can not be overstated is their longevity.  While long stem roses typically last an average of five days, fresh cut orchids will remain lovely for up to two weeks.  An orchid plant can last months, and they are deceptively easy to care for.  For a masculine approach to the orchid, a floating cymbidium stem artfully arranged inside a glass cylinder is a very modern choice. This option is long lasting and costs about $25 less than a dozen roses.

If your other half is more traditional and may be disappointed if they don’t receive roses, let us become creative to come up with a special mixed arrangement.  Rather than the typical tall vase, try a tight and compact cube arrangement.  Not only will the flowers be easier to bring home, they will last longer!  Low and lush arrangements are a modern trend and appeal to most discerning costumers.  Hydrangea, tulips, and roses make a romantic mix certain to please even the most persnickety lover. Because the roses are being added to other flowers, the cost will be significantly less then a solo vase of roses.  While cost is often not the deciding factor when choosing a gift for someone special, in these times it is very nice to have some economical options.

As a floral designer, my opinion of roses may be negatively influenced by the scars and calluses I’ve acquired from years of Valentine’s Day thorns.  However, I have the unique opportunity to see the wide of variety of flowers available to customers during this romantic holiday.  While roses are certainly the star of the show, there are many flowers that are waiting in the wings for their moment to shine.  No matter what, when the flowers are sent with love, they transcend and aspire to more than Stein’s observation.  “A rose is a rose is a rose…” unless it comes from you!

About Starbright Floral Design: We are located in New York City in the heart of the historic flower district.  We are in a loft on the second floor of our building on 28th Street, right by Seventh Avenue.  We deliver to all of New York City ourselves (and beyond).  This holiday season we have some amazing Valentine’s styles for you to choose from.  Give us a call (800.520.8999), stop by (150 West 28th Street, Suite 201) or visit our website (www.starflor.com)

The Hotel Experience Awards

A photo op with the award winners and presenters
Catching up with great friends at the Westin Times Square table...

On Monday night the 1st of February the top hotels in New York City were honored for their achievements in travel, tourism and service to all those who visit our great city.

NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly received a lifetime achievement award.  New York City is now “Officially the Safest Big City” in America (and probably the world)!

Hotel honors were given for everything from the Best Overall Hotel Experience , The Concierge Desk of the Year, and even the Most Family Friendly Hotel in all of New York (both big and small).  Yes, we have hotels in all sizes in New York!

Starbright was honored to be a sponsor of the Hotel Experience Awards this year and for every year since their inception (the better part of a decade).  The awards evening was held at Cipriani’s Wall Street and there were well over 500 in attendance.  Many have called this event “The Oscars of the Hospitality Industry” and I for one attending last night agree.   It was a fun night, a night of making new friends and catching up with old ones.

Floral decor was provided by our very own Creative Team at Starbright.  We presented a short cylinder vase with a ti leaf wrapped on the inside (so that the water and the stems were not visible).  Each centerpiece had twenty stems of balm dendrobium orchids and about ten stems of vanda orchids (in lavender).

To top off the evening?  It was my personal honor to be selected to give the award to The Most Family Friendly Hotel in the over 500 room category.  The Marriott Marquis won this category and it was a dream come true when my close personal friend George Ntim (Director of Guest Relations) received the award on behalf of the property.

The complete press release and better photos of the event will be on this scribe soon… But for now – enjoy!

You can always find Starbright Floral Design at www.starflor.com.  We are known as “The Official Florist of the City That Never Sleeps”.  Starbright offers the highest quality blooms imaginable and compositions of flowers that come from all five continents.  Gift-giving deliveries can be made anywhere in New York City (in most cases within an hour) and beyond Manhattan pretty much anywhere.  In addition, we have decorated for some of the most amazing events that have ever taken place  in all of New York’s venues… To learn a bit more about the work that we do, give us a call or visit our website!

The Begining is Always Rough…

Flat Bamboo Tray of Roses by Starbright

While I have written many times on many different blogs – The begining is always wierd! The first entry! What in the world do you write about? How do you keep one’s interest? How do you create the aura of a blog that is in widely read by many? You simply do not!

Actually what you do, is you hope nobody visits your blog posting until you have at least a dozen or so entries and this one is buried deep in the page – so far down that nobody will scroll that far and want to read the first entry. This is where I get the salvation for these random sensles thoughts that are currently occupying pixels on the screen.

Anyway – Welcome to our wonderful world of flowers. Starbright Floral Design is located in the heart of New York City’s Historic Flower District. We have been here for the past fifteen years and we are having the time of our lives!

Stick around. We are not professional writers, but we will keep your interest. In the pages that will follow, you will find random thoughts about arranging flowers, what is in season, gift protocol, how to buy flowers in the farmer’s markets and much-much more!

If you have a bit of free time, please visit our website at http://www.starflor.com. Here you will gain a much broader perspective on who we are and the type of work that we do. We look forward to hearing from you and making our conversations as interactive as possible.

Give us a call, drop us a line, visit our website or send us a smoke signal – know we love you!
