Starbright Helps “Petal It Forward” in NYC

On Wednesday, Starbright Floral Design was thrilled to be part of the second annual Petal It Forward, a pop-up, surprise event in Manhattan where 4,400 floral bouquets were given away in bunches of two, to delight commuters. One flower composition was for them to keep and the other was for them to “Petal It Forward” and gift it to someone whose day they wanted to brighten in NYC, whoever that might be. There’s nothing like the fresh beauty of flowers to make someone’s day!

Petal It Forward was organized by the Society of American Florists (SAF), which is the national trade association to the floral industry, representing all segments, including growers, wholesalers and florists, like Starbright. We are thrilled to have been a member of SAF for more than a decade and love working with them to enhance the community in New York City through wonderful events like this.

Starbright’s team of “Happiness Ambassadors” for Petal It Forward.

Petal It Forward was inspired by research from Rutgers University which found that while 80 percent of people say flowers make them happy, 88 percent said that giving flowers to someone else makes them happy. Knowing that, Petal It Forward made many people’s day throughout NYC this week!

Starbright was honored to be asked to participate as “Happiness Ambassadors” in Petal it Forward — a role that we were only too delighted to fill. As Happiness Ambassadors, we gave away thousands of flowers from 7 AM – 11 AM in NYC, but we were up and getting ready since 4 AM, because we wanted to be fully prepared to make everyone in New York City smile! Everyone at Starbright was delighted to enjoy the morning with our fellow New Yorkers and see how happy they were to be the recipient of unexpected joy in their day.

Starbright delighted people passing by with beautiful bouquets.

While as Happiness Ambassadors we did our very best to brighten everyone’s day in Manhattan, it wasn’t just in NYC that Petal It Forward was taking place. In 225 cities in all 50 states, Petal It Forward was spreading happiness through 256 local events to shower the country in flowers. Starbright was thrilled to be part of this wonderful day.

Social media was abuzz with the the #petalitforward chatter and recipients posted photos of their beautiful flowers and the gifting of the other bouquet. This multiplying effect of being able to share the joy of beautiful flowers with others is one of our favorite things at Starbright, making Petal It Forward one of the most beloved events in our year.

We had a wonderful time with our friends from the SAF and everyone at Holland America Flowers who graciously donated the blooms to be used in New York City and the folks from Delaware Valley Floral Group, who arranged for the transportation of the thousands of flowers to Manhattan.

If we didn’t see you this year, we hope to next year! With Petal It Forward being such a success, plans are already underway for 2017 and we are looking forward to spreading joy and happiness throughout New York City once again.

Flowers 101: The Alstroemeria

At Starbright Floral Design, it is our great delight to bring you the occasional missive where we can feature the flowers that capture our fancy — and we hope yours! One of our greatest passions is introducing our friends and clients to the myriad of stunning flowers that fill our world.

If you haven’t heard of the Alstroemeria flower, we’re about to make your day! Also known as a Peruvian Lily, these fun and festive blooms are a favorite among florists in New York City, and it’s easy to see why.

Lavender and white Alstroemeria are stunning with their showy blossoms.
Lavender and white Alstroemeria are stunning with their showy blossoms.

The depth of beauty of the Alstroemeria unfolds before your eyes; while you might first be captivated by its resemblance to lilies, as you gaze more deeply into it, you will discover a cheetah-like pattern etched on the inner petals of each flower.

Symbolizing friendship and devotion, Alstroemerias epitomize this through their incredible longevity. As florists, one of the attributes we love about the Alstroemeria is the subtle and slow bloom of each flower. Each bouquet of Alstroemerias lasts longer than many other compositions, bringing a smile to everyone who sees it. If you are looking for a stunning display that will last for almost two weeks in a vase, look no further than these flowers.

Grown in a variety of hues, from deep apricot and vibrant lavender to snowy white, Alstroemeria flowers are stunning in every shade. The sunny yellows, gorgeous pinks and joyful reds of this flower make it a captivating addition to any bouquet. In addition to weaving Alstroemerias in our compositions, another way we at Starbright love to honor the beauty of these flowers is to arrange them with more Alstroemerias of different colors for a jubilant display, perfect for an entryway or dining room.

Alstroemerias festive spirit is readily seen when grouped together in a bouquet.
Alstroemerias festive spirit is readily seen when grouped together in a bouquet.

Alstroemerias have no scent and while some may miss the perfume of blossoms, we at Starbright think that the overwhelming ornamentation of the flowers more than compensates for this.

Alstroemerias are bountiful throughout NYC and that is thanks to the hybrids that have been cultivated which allow a year-round growing season. Native to South America, some varieties of this flower grow in the US and can even be cultivated in New York City’s climate, though Alstroemerias may not survive through the harsh NYC winters.

If you choose to adorn a space with Alstroemeria flowers and can afford to wait a bit to see their beauty shine, look for blooms that have not yet opened. Although less magnificent at that stage, you will be rewarded for your patience with the joy of seeing each blossom slowly open to a showy display.

pl1
Alstroemerias mixed with other flowers highlights their unique beauty.

For all cut flowers including Alstroemerias, water should be refreshed daily, or as soon as it is not crystal clear. At Starbright, we ensure that all of our flowers are only enjoying water that we ourselves would relish drinking. Our flowers have only the cleanest water to nourish them.

We hope that you enjoyed discovering Alstroemeria as we have loved being able to expound upon the beauty and care of these flowers. All of us at Starbright warmly invite you to visit us to see the these flowers and more up close. And while you’re visiting, remember to have the perfect bouquet curated just for you. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Starbright and the City

At Starbright Floral Design, we stop to smell the flowers every day. Even though we do, we also find our schedule bountiful with events. We wanted to share with our friends and colleagues what we’ve been up to these past few days. Sometime, somewhere, we hope that you are at a special gathering decorated with our amazing blooms and robust accents.

Starbright was delighted to be invited to enhance the beauty that is the Oculus at the World Trade Center, located in lower Manhattan. Our client was Advertising Week and they had the distinct honor of hosting the first ever event at the Santiago Calatrava designed space that is referred to as a “bird in flight”.

Starbright bedecked the Oculus with lush, willowy palm trees.
Starbright bedecked the Oculus with lush, willowy palm trees.

The event took place at the Grand Staircase of the Oculus in New York City, which was built with white Italian marble. Advertising Week, which brings the best and brightest of the marketing and entertainment fields together for one week in NYC, wanted to highlight the serenity of the space while evoking the fresh and innovative practices that they are known for creating in their industry. As soon as Advertising Week described their vision for the event, we at Starbright Floral Design knew that lush palm trees would the perfect accompaniment to the evening.

The awe-inspiring vaulted ceiling at the Oculus is the focal point that we wanted to enhance.
The awe-inspiring vaulted ceiling at the Oculus is the focal point that we wanted to enhance.

As some of our clients may not know, not only does Starbright Floral Design create custom floral displays in venues across New York City, we are also able to send our carefully curated plants to be rented for an evening, which is what Advertising Week decided to do in this case. We were thrilled to be a small part of this amazing evening in NYC and look forward to being a partner with Advertising Week for future events.

This past week Starbright also had the privilege of beautifying the Baryshnikov Arts Center in Manhattan for their annual gala, the Fall Fete. The Fall Fete was created to raise funds to support performances and residencies at BAC, while also having a magical evening in NYC with those who are passionate about the arts.

Starbright had been requested to create floral accents that would enhance the elegance of the Center’s Ballroom for the sumptuous dinner, without causing difficulty for guests who wanted to converse while they dined. We rose to the challenge by crafting a runner of blooms and greenery that ran the 18-foot length of each table. Composed of an array of fuchsia calla lilies, orchids, orange pincushion protea flowers and purple eucalyptus, the runner was pin-spot lit from above to enhance the display and create an intimate and inviting atmosphere for the private gala.

Verdant greens provided the perfect background emphasize the floral arrangements.

Our dramatic arrangements that accompanied the photo area for the event were created to create a heightened effect that would make an impact, both visually and emotionally, as guests entered the venue. Staying true to the theme of the evening, these displays were made of a blend of fuchsia calla lilies, orchids and orange pincushion protea flowers, with purple eucalyptus and succulents that took guests’ breath away.

These arrangements created an elevated elegance for photography at the step and repeat wall.

For many of our events, we create variations on a floral theme, and the evening at the Baryshnikov Arts Center in Manhattan was no exception. We crafted another floral runner for the bar, where the delicate, soft curve of the calla lily’s petal could be admired up close.

The length of the bar was lined with calla lilies mixed with greens.

We pride ourselves as florists on remembering the smallest details to ensure the biggest impact in our arrangements. That is why, for the dinner at the Baryshnikov Arts Center in NYC, we added tangerine ribbons to our displays in the lavatories to make sure that elegance abounded wherever guests glanced.

Starbright Floral Design at Harvest in the Square

Starbright Floral Design was thrilled to be an official sponsor of the 21st annual Harvest in the Square that took place in Manhattan on September 22, 2016. This year was, as in previous years, a huge success. Harvest in the Square is a fantastic evening when more than 45 food vendors and 12 wineries come together under a beautiful tent in Union Square to provide an unforgettable evening for attendees by giving them a taste of the best of what each of them have to offer.

hits1aStarbright Floral Design transformed Union Square Park with festive fall foliage.

In addition to showcasing the broad array of culinary masterpieces that Union Square offers, Harvest in the Square also raises funds for the Union Square Partnership. The Union Square Partnership is a community-based nonprofit that is a group of local businesses which have joined together in order to ensure that Union Square in NYC is a beautiful and welcoming space for all who visit. Harvest in the Square is the culminating event of the year and is considered by many to be the preeminent food and wine tasting event in New York City.

A blend of sunflowers, chrysanthemums, wheat and barley moss created a rustic elegance atmosphere for soiree.

Starbright had the distinct honor of decorating the entire venue for Harvest in the Square. We crafted thousands of flowers into centerpieces and decor throughout Union Square Park while staying true to the Harvest theme.

We focused on incorporating sunflowers, wildflowers and other rustic touches to keep in step with the autumnal motif of the evening. Our centerpieces were showcased in wicker baskets and we used calla lilies to add a touch of whimsy and elegance. Starbright was able to incorporate one of our favorite flowers, the orchid, into the arrangements by sourcing incredibly beautiful and unusual orange orchids to make an incredible statement.

Dramatic orange calla lilies were a stunning focal point in the centerpieces.

Starbright also crafted the floral displays for each table at Harvest in the Square. We blended deep violet Licianthus with wild clover and greens to create a subdued display. Our intention was to subtly evoke the theme while letting the attention stay focused on the delicious offerings.

hits6

Starbright’s reserved table displays kept the focus on the culinary delights.

Harvest in the Square attracts a large crowd each year and 2016 was no exception. With over 1,200 attendees, we were excited to offer each one a signature Starbright bouquet. Composed of Roses, Gerbera Daisies and Solidago, the attendees were delighted with this unexpected memento from the event that a team of nine designers at the Starbright shop had composed, using over 5,000 fresh blooms.

hits5

Julie McGonigle from Starbright oversaw the operations for the event.

The entire team at Starbright Floral Design was delighted to play a part in this year’s Harvest in the Square. Our three designers who were onsite for the event were crafting floral displays the entire day and the feedback we received was that the attendees thought the creations were spectacular.

Having raised over five million dollars since the event’s inception, we take great pride in knowing our contribution will help in maintaining and beautifying one of the great gems of New York City: Union Square Park. We’re already looking forward to next year!

August Birth Flowers in NYC: Gladiolus

Gladiolus

Gladiolus has been dubbed the flower of the Gladiators.   It represents strength of character, sincerity, generosity.  In the Victorian age with its secret language of flowers it was said to represent “love at first sight”. Gladiolus derives its name from the latin word for sword and is sometimes called the sword lily.  As a member of the iris family it contains about 260 species.   Only about 10 are native to Europe the rest are native to southern Africa.  The species vary from very small to the spectacular giant flower spikes you see in floral designs. The flower stalk of the Gladiolus contains an extended row of trumpet-shaped, fragrant flowers, all of which face in one direction. Their colors include pink to reddish or light purple with white, contrasting markings, or white to cream or orange to red.

Once upon a time Gladiolus were viewed as an upscale, highly sought after flower but fell into the sympathy arrangement niche.  However, we’ve recently seen a resurgence of the Gladiolus in NYC.    Many upscale restaurants and hotels in NYC have once again incorporated the Gladiolus in their floral decor.

Roses, Roses, Roses: June’s Birth Flower

Roses in NYC are as plentiful as NYC birthdays.  Every year millions of roses are gifted in NYC for any number of occasions.  In June, the appropriate floral gift is the rose as it is June’s birth flower.  Rich in popularity as a symbol of love and romance it hasn’t always been so.   In fact, the rose was first looked upon as a symbol of war.  A civil war that raged on from 1455-1487 between the House of York and the House of Lancaster.   The House of York adopted a white rose, the House of Lancaster was represented by a red rose. The war has been dubbed “The War of the Roses”.  The winner of this war, Tudor Henry VII (The Tudors), merged his Lancastrian rose with the rose of his York bride and thus the creation of the Tudor Rose, the Rose of England.

Roses
Roses, Roses, Roses in NYC

In later years the rose evolved into a form of language creating a secret means of communication between lovers.   In the mid 18th century the wife of the British ambassador in Constantinople described this language in her letters.  Largely due to the publication of her letters after her death, we have the code necessary to decipher the intricate language of roses.  For example if you want to ask your love interest “will you love me?”, send an open white rose.    Want to ask  “Don’t you love me any more?” , send an open yellow rose.      Want to say “I respect and look up to you” then send a bouquet of white roses.   Red roses signify  “forever I Love You”.  However a bouquet of red and white roses state “Together we are one and united”.  Want to declare your attraction to someone but don’t want to go as far as declaring your undying love, then purple roses are the way to go.  Colors alone aren’t enough to deliver the complex messages of love.  In combination with the colors, the number and degree of bloom of the roses have also been assigned meaning.  A dozen roses says  “Be Mine”.   Thirteen roses tells someone we’ll be friends forever.  Three dozen roses expresses “I’m head over heels in love!”.  Six dozen roses or more says “my love for you is limitless”.  In addition to its Victorian assigned message, this last one says “I’m a Starbright Gold club member”!!!.

Regardless of its diverse assigned meanings, the one constant is the rose’s undeniable beauty.  The recipient of a beautiful arrangement of roses is always appreciative.

Secretaries Day Flowers: The law of unintended consequences strikes again!

Flowers for secretaries day in NYC has been a tradition since long before it was a widely recognized holiday in other parts of the country.  Administrative Professionals Day (Secretaries Day) is the day executives recognize the work of secretaries, and other administrative support professionals.  However, these are precisely the people who often are given the task of organizing and keeping the executive’s schedule updated.  Every year at this time, as a by-product of the holiday, these individuals are put in an unenviable predicament.  Marking the calendar can be viewed as self-serving and suggestive.  Not marking the calendar can lead to their bosses’ embarrassment and feverish scrambling. In an effort to help our administrative professional friends and our executives, Starbright has launched an awareness campaign.  This blog as well as our other cyber communication means at our disposal are being applied to ease the burden placed on administrative professionals.

NYC Secretaries day flowers
Secretaries Day Flowers in NYC

equalhappyStarbright’s unofficial sanctioned study has shown that the Administrative  Professionals in NYC who received flowers were happier than the Administrative Professionals who received nothing.

Administrative Professionals Day (Secretaries Day) is observed on the Wednesday of the last full week of April, this year the day is April 22.  National Secretaries Week was created in 1952 through the efforts of Harry F. Klemfuss, a New York publicist and honorary member of the Florist hall of fame (second part- kidding).  In 1955, the observance date of National Secretaries Week was moved to the last full week of April. The name was changed to Professional Secretaries Week in 1981, and became Administrative Professionals Week in 2000.

The secret language of flowers was created in Victorian times when etiquette was prohibitive of voicing one’s emotions.  Accordingly flowers were given hidden meanings.  Floral gifts given to administrative professionals on April 22 contain no hidden meaning.  The message is loud and clear and for all the office to see: “Thank You!”

It is that time of the year to celebrate and express our appreciation to those who do so much all year-long to keep the wheels of commerce  moving.  Assistants of all stripes have saved companies, increased revenue, prevented recessions and even kept those that they report looking great and making sure  that personal and department performance is at it is peak.  All of us at Starbright Floral Design are standing ready all week to help you express the appreciation that is so well deserved.

Starbright Floral Design is located in the heart of New York City’s Historic Flower District in New York City and we deliver beautiful flowers, bouquets in amazing designs and so much more throughout Manhattan and beyond.

Crocosmia
Quick Notes /

A favorite flower in August, crocosmia is a common flower in the grasslands of southern and eastern Africa. In the United Staes, these lovely blooms are often referred to as Coppertips or Falling Stars. They grow as evergreens or as deciduous perennials and come back year after year to please the senses with their trumpet-like shapes and bright colors.

The genus name is derived from the Greek words krokos, meaning “saffron”, and osme, meaning “odor” – from the fact that dried leaves of these plants emit a strong smell like that of saffron (a spice derived from Crocus – another genus belonging to the Iridaceae) – when immersed in hot water.

Visual Notes /

Crocosmia is distinctive for its colorful inflorescence in shocking orange and reds. The stems branch out and display a number of blooms along one side of each stem near the end and nod and sway gracefully above your flower beds or your late summer arrangements.  The Crocosmia leaves are long, pointy and have parallel veins along their length. They grow in clumps in bloom in a spectacular

Color Profile : Purple

Ever wonder where flowers got their “meanings”?

Color psychologist don’t. And they have loads of studies backing up their theories. The general model of color psychology relies on six basic principles:

  1. Color can carry specific meaning.
  2. Color meaning is either based in learned meaning or biologically innate meaning.
  3. The perception of a color causes evaluation automatically by the person perceiving.
  4. The evaluation process forces color motivated behavior.
  5. Color usually exerts its influence automatically.
  6. Color meaning and effect has to do with context as well.[1]

Over at Starbright Floral Design, we get to work with lots of colors everyday and all of us have our favorites. But why are they our favorites and what does that say? Up this week :
