A little known fact of Paul Revere’s famous ride is that it was the second excited shouting ride he had taken. His first such ride was in late April, in which he hurriedly rode around town to spread the news: “The Peonies are coming, the peonies are coming, the peonies are coming!”. The news helped people forget the issues of the day. New Yorkers rejoice! Peonies have arrived. The unmatched beauty and uniqeness of the Peony have inspired NYC floral designers to create some incredibly beautiful flower arrangements.
Perfect Peony in NYC
Peony derives its name from the GreekPaeon; physician of the gods. If anything can cure the ills of winter it’s the site of a peony flower. Its majestic blooms of white, pink and red have aptly earned it the nick name “King of Flowers”.
In the language of flowers a display of Peony expresses bashfulness. The meaning is an oddity considering the flamboyance of the flower. Any arrangement containing Peonies shouts out “take notice of me!.”
In today’s global community and travel, Peonies are available throughout the year. However, their vibrancy and quality peak in spring.
Starbright is fortunate to be situated in New York City’s Flower Market making the “King Flower” available to our clientele. Let Starbright Floral NYC help liberate those spring smiles from the winter blues with Peony flower delivery in NYC.

Flowers for secretaries day in NYC has been a tradition since long before it was a widely recognized holiday in other parts of the country. Administrative Professionals Day (Secretaries Day) is the day executives recognize the work of secretaries, and other administrative support professionals. However, these are precisely the people who often are given the task of organizing and keeping the executive’s schedule updated. Every year at this time, as a by-product of the holiday, these individuals are put in an unenviable predicament. Marking the calendar can be viewed as self-serving and suggestive. Not marking the calendar can lead to their bosses’ embarrassment and feverish scrambling. In an effort to help our administrative professional friends and our executives, Starbright has launched an awareness campaign. This blog as well as our other cyber communication means at our disposal are being applied to ease the burden placed on administrative professionals.
Secretaries Day Flowers in NYC
Starbright’s unofficial sanctioned study has shown that the Administrative Professionals in NYC who received flowers were happier than the Administrative Professionals who received nothing.
Administrative Professionals Day (Secretaries Day) is observed on the Wednesday of the last full week of April, this year the day is April 22. National Secretaries Week was created in 1952 through the efforts of Harry F. Klemfuss, a New York publicist and honorary member of the Florist hall of fame (second part- kidding). In 1955, the observance date of National Secretaries Week was moved to the last full week of April. The name was changed to Professional Secretaries Week in 1981, and became Administrative Professionals Week in 2000.
The secret language of flowers was created in Victorian times when etiquette was prohibitive of voicing one’s emotions. Accordingly flowers were given hidden meanings. Floral gifts given to administrative professionals on April 22 contain no hidden meaning. The message is loud and clear and for all the office to see: “Thank You!”
It is that time of the year to celebrate and express our appreciation to those who do so much all year-long to keep the wheels of commerce moving. Assistants of all stripes have saved companies, increased revenue, prevented recessions and even kept those that they report looking great and making sure that personal and department performance is at it is peak. All of us at Starbright Floral Design are standing ready all week to help you express the appreciation that is so well deserved.

Starbright Floral Design – Flowers, Festivals and Celebrations. It is what we do!
The anticipation or excitement was building for days. In the 41 year history of the Macy’s flower show this had only happened twice before, Starbright would be appearing. Once the news was out, the lines started forming. Like the Beatles in 1965, Starbright was taking the city and Macy’s by storm. Our fans, affectionately named “Starbraniacs”, were camped out for days (Macy’s would tell you just under 10 minutes) just for a chance to get a glimpse of our leader and creative inspirator, Nic Faitos. This impromptu picture was taken of Nic with some lucky fans who finally got the chance to meet the supreme leader. The fans, never knowing when they would ever get the chance to meet Nic again (Nic would tell you just come on by the store he would love to meet you) nearly fainted from their joy.
Once the crowd settled down, the floral demonstration began. This year’s demonstration centered around classic floral designing tools including designing with floral foam. The picture shows Nic demonstrating how to properly place a flower stem in floral foam. In the background you can see Socrates, a Starbright floral artist, preparing a one of a kind bouquet to be given to randomly chosen lucky winner. The lucky winner was believed to have stated that this was the single most glorious moment in her life.

Starbright Floral Design issued a press release today proudly announcing the long-awaited arrival of the Lazarus Rose. The Lazarus Rose is a genetically engineered rose developed by Starbright that grows roots and is ready to be replanted in practically any pot or garden. It is the dawn of a new day for rose buyers in NYC. No longer will the roses purchased for a loved one today be contributing to the City’s gigantic trash problem tomorrow. Rather than becoming a neighborhood blight the Lazarus rose is destined to beautify our great city with thousands of new rose bushes in its first year alone. The full press release is being republished herein for informational purposes:
PRESS RELEASE
Starbright Floral Design Kicks Off the “Lazarus Rose”. The Most Significant Product Launch since the advent of air travel and genetic engineered plants.
NEW YORK — April 1, 2015 — At a press conference at Starbright headquarters in the heart of New York City’s historic flower district, Nic Faitos , Starbright’s Managing Partner, in association with the Dutch Flower Marketing Association (an industry group whose mission is to promote flower buying throughout the world), announced the availability of the “Lazarus Rose”. A new rose variety that allows the recipient to plant the stem in a garden once the bloom from the arrangement has wilted and create a new rose awaiting to be planted. The concept was conceived by the creative minds of the “Go Green Project” and designed through many years of collaboration between the finest botanists in the world with Dr. Nisan Sakasi as the lead scientist.
Today’s announcement that the “Lazarus Rose” is available to retail customers of Starbright and volume licensing customers marks the beginning of the most significant product launch in our company’s history and perhaps since Barbara McClintock’s discovery of “Jumping Genes”. The “Lazarus Rose” will be available to retail customers effective immediately. Availability to NYC organizations with volume license agreements will begin shortly but initial supplies are limited to retail customers with Starbright Loyalty Club membership. Volume customers will be supplied for orders FOB New York City for delivery before Mother’s Day and beyond.
Through chromosome engineering, more fully discussed in the science section herein, Turkey’s premier botanist Dr. Nisan Sakasi was able to develop a rose which begins to regenerate as soon as it is clipped. The result is the growth of roots at the cutting site. Currently the Lazarus Rose is limited to the Afrilu Wawaye variety of rose. Accordingly, the price of the Lazarus Rose is for upscale clientele.
Customer feedback through Starbright’s web site, starflor.com , guided product development. “This is a game changing product,” Faitos said. “It’s an incredible step forward in the floral industry with ramifications that are yet unknown but undoubtedly far-reaching. Accordingly, in a press release under separate cover, we’ve announced the formation of a joint venture between Starbright and The Dutch Flower Marketing Association to fully explore the wide-ranging uses of this exciting innovation.” Said Faitos. First Users See Clear Business Value
Joining Faitos at Starbright’s headquarters was Poisson D’Avril, the president of the Hospitality and Tourism Association of Greater New York.
“In the highly competitive and fast-moving hospitality industry, our advantage comes first from our people and second from everything NYC has to offer. You can add the Lazarus Rose to the list of incomparable NYC attractions.” Said D’Avril. “Nic has allowed several of our higher end venues offer the Lazarus Rose prior to its official release. The response has been extraordinary. Finally, something to give to that person who has everything!” Original Science
“The ovules of a rose are mega sporangia and typically develop into female gametophytes. These gametophytes give rise to egg cells which, in a typical rose holds the pollen.” Said Dr. Nisan Sakasi. “In the transgenic rose, called the Lazarus Rose, through chromosome engineering, our team was able to develop a rose that has characteristics of an African Violet and behaves like a clipping from an African Violet. The mature egg cells of the African Violet and the Rose are split through chemical mutagens and combined through protoplast fusion. The genetic recombination leads the rose to react just like African Violet clippings that are placed in a propagating agent. The agent used with the rose is simply water with a few pieces of horticultural charcoal placed in the bottom of the container.” Said Dr. Nisan Sakasi. Transcripts of Dr. Nisan Sakasi full procedures are available upon request. On the Road to the Future
“During the last decade, Starbright has built an impeccable reputation in the floral industry with unsurpassed customer service.” Faitos said. “Although we have been at the forefront of technology, the new product announced today is the most innovative product we’ve ever been involved with, and I believe it signals the beginning of a new wave of innovation that will have a profound impact during the next decade.” Said Nic Faitos, President of Starbright Floral Design.
Located in the heart of NYC’s flower district and founded in 1994, Starbright Floral Design has established the gold standard for customer service within the floral industry. It truly is a New York City event that is not to be missed. 2015’s event is themed, Art in Bloom and is running from March 22 through April 4. This year Macy’s has added an attraction that can’t be missed. Sure they will have dramatic showpieces, and breath-taking displays of flowers guaranteed to bring a smile to all, but in addition, Starbright is thrilled to have been asked to present a Macy’s floral seminar for the third time. Mark your calendars and set aside Friday, April 3 to come visit it us at Macy’s. This year’s selected topic is classical floral designs with a Starbright spin.

It’s March 17 which means it’s celebration time. Every year the Irish and the Irish for a day celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. What began as celebration of the patron saint of Ireland has become a celebration of everything Irish. NYC is renowned for its incredible population increase of people who claim to be Irish on March 17. Festivals, parades, parties and feast throughout the world reign the day. What feast or celebration is complete without flowers? Although blue was initially the color of St. Patrick’s day it has universally been replaced by Green. NYC flower lovers and connoisseurs have always supplemented their traditional celebrations with flowers.
Conclusion: Flower gift giving on St. Patrick’s Day is a tradition that we humbly and hopefully submit should be universally accepted! Enjoy the day everyone, with flowers or without (preferably with).

Planning a wedding reception on a budget can be disheartening. But it doesn’t have to be! There are a host of options for couples with refined taste and a restricted budget. One area of the budget that can grow quickly is the tabletop centerpiece. These pieces come in all shapes and varieties and are generally placed at the center of each dinning table. The best centerpieces are designed to coordinate with the rest of the events décor; appropriate centerpieces will help your event’s theme suffuse the space and fill your guests with festive feelings. Many floral centerpieces are selected for their color, texture, or the time of year. They sometimes include decorative items like colored wire, glass beads, or river stones. The size and shape is also variable and sometimes an event may include a number of sizes to represent the guest’s status; the wedding party and family tables are pretty much always identifiable based on the size of the centerpiece.
Starbright Floral Design suggests following a few simple steps to create a stunning tabletop without breaking the budget.
Consider the size of your container
Think about Goldilocks when selecting the size of the floral container. Too small and the flowers may feel insignificant, too big and the flowers will just get in the way. Not sure what size you need? Ask you florist! Starbright’s design consultants and client satisfaction representatives will help guide you to success. Many styles and concepts can be scaled easily to just the size you’re looking for. One such arrangement from Starbright is Give Me Tomorrow. This arrangement features roses cut to fit and fill a square container.
Cut roses look good in any size container!
Consider the flowers
Centerpieces should mimic the overall floral direction. A great way to maximize the consistency is to select one standout bloom from the arrangements that captures the color and feel of the rest of the floral styling. Some of our favorite blooms for this purpose include cymbidium orchids, calla lilies, and amaryllis.

Or, for the adventurous and openminded, consider the unexpectedness of carnations. For outside weddings with a lot of green, one of our favorite potential centerpieces is this guy:
Green Trick makes for an unexpected twist on the classic centerpiece
Consider the style
Another way to keep your centerpieces elegant, on-theme, and within a budget is to consider modern styles; modern arrangements often have a clean look and fewer blooms than traditionally lush arrangements. These pieces can be soft and romantic…

Planning Florals for a Valentine’s Day Wedding in NYC
Roses and Valentine’s Day are like Peanut Butter and Jelly
Is there anything more romantic than a Valentine’s Day wedding in NYC?
The story of St. Valentine is one of hopeful love. During the time that he lived, soldiers weren’t allowed to marry under Roman law. That wasn’t acceptable for ol’ Val who (as we like to think) believed that if any two people wanted to get married, they should have the right to do so. He married many soldiers despite the harsh laws and harsher punishment – it was the right thing to do – but ultimately, for this practice, he was executed.
It’s been an exciting few years, but just because we all can get married in many states doesn’t mean everyone can get married everywhere yet. This Valentine’s Day, we’ll be looking to St. Valentine as an inspiration because we know there’s nothing more inspiring than watching two individuals embark on a lifelong journey of love and partnership.
So, flowers. Here’s the thing about Valentines Day and flowers – flower shops are pretty-much going to be jam-packed with roses – and sometimes, very little else. If you’re having an an event on Valentine’s Day and you don’t want roses, you need to let your florist know a few weeks in advance. Valentines Day is a bit of a stress on the gears that keep the industry moving – for about 96 hours, all anybody is going to want when they call up the shop is a dozen (or more) roses. All these roses get the shelf space that usually goes to the rest of the inventory – while other flowers are around, they’re in a bit of a short supply compared to the rest of the year. Flower biz is like any other biz – if you let your vendors know what you want with as much “time to go” as possible, you’ll get the flowers you want without any stress.
But, this is Valentine’s Day – you probably totally do want roses. They’re a great choice – your grandma and aunt will think they’re lovely, they’ll smell nice but not too strong, and when the event is done you’ll have a whooooooole bunch of rose petals to strew about everywhere. When you’re designing your rose centerpiece, keep in mind that roses come in lots of lengths, some on very long stems – this is great for creating arrangements with with a lot of height variance. Roses also come in many, many colors – it doesn’t have to be all red and white! You’ll find oranges, pinks, purples and yellows – again, just make sure to mention this to your florist a few weeks before Valentine’s, so they can order what they’ll need and schedule your event into their busiest time.
Composite Rose bouquet by Sokratis
One of Starbright Floral’s amazing designers, put together this composite bouquet to match the latest floral trends walking down the runways. This is a carefully crafted piece made by wiring individual rose petals and arranging them into one giant rose. It’s high on impact, but deceptively low on fuss (in actuality, this takes a long, long time!). While this would make an amazing centerpiece, the time it takes may be prohibitive to the budget. For an alternative rose centerpiece, these pave styles are flawlessly refined.
Pave roses sparkle as a centerpiece
Whatever is in your centerpiece should also be in your boutonniere (you can read all about boutonnieres here). If you’ve got a wedding party, make sure the folk getting wedded are in a different boutonniere from the folk standing up with the couple.

Glorious Greens
So, design. When it’s good, it’s usually great – and when it’s bad, it’s usually “ugh, awful, no way!” This is true across the board – fashion, graphic design, food, flowers, you name it. Many people think that the trick to good design is “having a great concept” – those people aren’t wrong, but they’re missing the secret: a good design covers all the details. When it comes to flowers, one of the details we almost never hear customer’s mention is the Green Stuff. But any floral designer with an attention to detail knows better. Starbright’s designer’s are fully aware what a difference upscale greens can make in an elegant flower arrangement for NYC floral consumers.
They may not be the star of the show, but these glorious greens can have a huge impact on the “vibe” of an arrangement. They are also a great way to personalize the standard Valentine’s Day fare of “a dozen roses”. Whether your looking to send something light and airy or lush and full – the greenery is a great place to make it your own.
Some of Starbright Floral Design’s favorite greens :
1. Spiral Eucalyptus : These “dusty” green shoots are ideal for filling in lofty arrangements and adding height. One of Starbright Floral Design’s favorite uses of seeded eucalyptus is with long-stem roses. This classic combination creates an airy elegance perfect for the minimalist in your life.
2. African Boxwood : Notable for it’s fine-toothed leaves and reddish tint, this green is a great compliment to all sorts of arrangements. The little, but lush clusters of leaves will fill in a lot of space and add a slightly “fresh-from-the-garden” feel to your arrangement. Boxwood has a long-vase life and will dry-out nicely as well.
3. Myrtle : This is another fantastic green to accompany your long-stem roses for Valentine’s Day. The bright jewel-green leaves and wood-like stems also have a sharp, clean smell and will stand up nicely in taller arrangements. In ancient Greco-Roman times, Myrtle was considered sacred to Venus, the goddess of love, and used to decorate wreaths and make garlands.
4. Italian Ruscus : Ruscus is an interesting addition to any arrangement. The large leaf-like cladodes are a brilliant green that matches the green stem; the tonal color makes these waxy greens look almost too perfect to be real.
5. Pittosporum : These are one of the more common greens that appear in short and mid-height arrangements. The plain leaves are bright green while the variegated variety is a softer shade of green with ivory details around the edges. But our favorite part about working with this green at Starbright Floral Design is the sweetly scented leaves.
6. Acacia : This unique green isn’t as common around the shop as some of the others, but it’s always worth asking. Acacia has a unique appearance that makes it great for tall arrangements. The thin branches are entirely covered in sharp triangular leaves, while pre-flowering yellow pods sprout wildly on the top third. In the language of flowers, the acacia signifies secret love. Check it how Starbright Floral Design used acacia in this arrangement to add height and texture :
Acacia makes a fantastic backdrop for delicate flowers while adding height
7. Seeded Eucalyptus : This eucalyptus variety has a softer appearance than the spiral eucalyptus. The leaves of this variety are slightly larger and droop romantically around cluster of lighter, and brighter seeds. If you’re looking for something softer that could potentially be described as “dreamy” – this is the eucalyptus for you.
8. Broadleaf Dusty Miller : These leaves are prized for their uniquely sliver appearance and soft felt-like texture. Another “romantic” green, broadleaf dusty miller looks great in low arrangements where it’s short stems can get to water.
9. Lace Dusty Miller : Another variety of dusty miller, known as silver ragwort, which is perfect for adding extra romance to an arrangement. The leaves of this variety also have a soft felt-like feel and silvery color.
Dusty Miller adds a complimentary “softness” to any arrangement
Next time you call the shop and order some flowers, feel free to give us some hints about the whole arrangement. We want you to be 100% happy with your flower purchase – the best way for us to do that is to give you exactly what you want!

“I’ll Be The One Wearing A Red Carnation, Because I Find You Fascinating”: How Flowers Can Send Secret Messages
Flowers aren’t just beautiful blooms with pleasing scents – the variety of plants available has led to the use of flowers to send coded messages at many points throughout human history. The practice of sending flower messages is called floriography. NYC flower lovers have been practicing floriography since before there was a flower market in NYC. The messages may be seem subtle and cryptic but Valentine’s Day flowers in NYC by Starbright delivers the message loud and proud for all to see “I love you!”.
References to flower codes go back as far as the Ancient Greeks, but very little is known about what the codes actually were – chances are the codes were passed on orally, their meaning transferred from one illiterate message-sender to another by word of mouth. Romans, Egyptians and Persians also used flower-codes to send messages, but just like the Greeks we know little about the codes themselves.
The Victorian-era world was obsessed with flowers – and Victorian-era England was obsessed with the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire, in the early half of the 18th century, was going wild for tulips – and had started using tulips to send very complex notes, with colors standing in for words and arrangement standing in for grammar. As England’s interest in botany grew, so did interest in the more dramatic side of flower history.
Lady Mary Morley Montagu is the woman credited with bringing flower codes to the British court. From 1716-1718 Lady Mary lived in the Ottoman Empire with her husband Lord Edward Montagu, British ambassador to the Ottoman Court. She wrote wildly-detailed letters back home to friends in London, capturing Ottoman life with a deeply revealing lens. Her letters detailed many mysteries – bath houses, women’s rights and flower codes. The flower codes captured Georgian-Victorian era attentions – by 1809, Joseph Hammer-Pugstall’s Dictionnaire du Language des Fleurs would present the formal code used by nobles across Europe, driving further adoption (and further dictionaries!) There were literally hundreds of dictionaries about – we found one digitized on archive.org. Let’s take a look inside for some ideas to personalize your Valentine’s Day floral gifts!
Calla Lily – Magnificent Beauty – It’s clear how these flowers got their symbolic meaning, they’re simply magnificent!
Yellow Tulips – Hopeless Love – These are the perfect gift for your partner-in-life – sometimes, “hopeless” can be a good thing. If these are for you check out Solar Flair.
Amaryllis – Pride, Timidity, Splendid Beauty – These are a great gift for someone who likes to grow flowers inside their New York City apartment. Uptown, downtown, East Side, West Side – these flowers will do great anywhere. Starbright offers these blooms in both arrangements and potted. Check out this post for tips on taking care of an amaryllis plant in NYC.
Red Roses – Pure and Lovely – Note that these meanings are typically intended for lovers…if you’re giving roses to a family member, according to this book, it’s best to go with white (which means “innocence”) or bouquet of mixed colors. No matter the color, size, or shape – roses in NYC are a Valentine’s Day favorite. Check out this post for a look at the value of roses through history.
Dwarf Sunflower – Adoration – They must’ve chosen this one because the lil’ guys are so adorable! These guys are available in summer and fall, but they’re such a favorite that we wanted to include them anyway.
Next week we’ll take a look at some of the floriography traditions from Asian cultures!
