Administrative Professionals Day (Secretaries Day) is the day executives recognize the work of secretaries, and other administrative support professionals. However, these are precisely the people who often are given the task of organizing and keeping the executive’s schedule updated. Every year at this time, as a by-product of the holiday, these individuals are put in an unenviable predicament. Marking the calendar can be viewed as self-serving and suggestive. Not marking the calendar can lead to their bosses’ embarrassment and feverish scrambling. In an effort to help our administrative professional friends and our executives, Starbright has launched an awareness campaign. This blog as well as our other cyber communication means at our disposal are being applied to ease the burden placed on administrative professionals.
Secretaries Day Flowers in NYC
Starbright’s unofficial sanctioned study has shown that the Administrative Professionals in NYC who received flowers were happier than the Administrative Professionals who received nothing.
Administrative Professionals Day (Secretaries Day) is observed on the Wednesday of the last full week of April, this year the day is April 22. National Secretaries Week was created in 1952 through the efforts of Harry F. Klemfuss, a New York publicist and honorary member of the Florist hall of fame (second part- kidding). In 1955, the observance date of National Secretaries Week was moved to the last full week of April. The name was changed to Professional Secretaries Week in 1981, and became Administrative Professionals Week in 2000.
The secret language of flowers was created in Victorian times when etiquette was prohibitive of voicing one’s emotions. Accordingly flowers were given hidden meanings. Floral gifts given to administrative professionals on April 22 contain no hidden meaning. The message is loud and clear and for all the office to see: “Thank You!”
It is that time of the year to celebrate and express our appreciation to those who do so much all year-long to keep the wheels of commerce moving. Assistants of all stripes have saved companies, increased revenue, prevented recessions and even kept those that they report looking great and making sure that personal and department performance is at it is peak. It’s March 17 which means it’s celebration time. Every year the Irish and the Irish for a day celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. What began as celebration of the patron saint of Ireland has become a celebration of everything Irish. NYC is renowned for its incredible population increase of people who claim to be Irish on March 17. Festivals, parades, parties and feast throughout the world reign the day. What feast or celebration is complete without flowers? Although blue was initially the color of St. Patrick’s day it has universally been replaced by Green. NYC flower lovers and connoisseurs have always supplemented their traditional celebrations with flowers.
Conclusion: Flower gift giving on St. Patrick’s Day is a tradition that we humbly and hopefully submit should be universally accepted! Enjoy the day everyone, with flowers or without (preferably with).

Planning a wedding reception on a budget can be disheartening. But it doesn’t have to be! There are a host of options for couples with refined taste and a restricted budget. One area of the budget that can grow quickly is the tabletop centerpiece. These pieces come in all shapes and varieties and are generally placed at the center of each dinning table. The best centerpieces are designed to coordinate with the rest of the events décor; appropriate centerpieces will help your event’s theme suffuse the space and fill your guests with festive feelings. Many floral centerpieces are selected for their color, texture, or the time of year. They sometimes include decorative items like colored wire, glass beads, or river stones. The size and shape is also variable and sometimes an event may include a number of sizes to represent the guest’s status; the wedding party and family tables are pretty much always identifiable based on the size of the centerpiece.

Consider the size of your container
Think about Goldilocks when selecting the size of the floral container. Too small and the flowers may feel insignificant, too big and the flowers will just get in the way. Not sure what size you need? Ask you florist! Starbright’s design consultants and client satisfaction representatives will help guide you to success. Many styles and concepts can be scaled easily to just the size you’re looking for. One such arrangement from Starbright is Give Me Tomorrow. There’s no shortage of Romance in NYC this week! With Valentine’s Day 2015 just around the corner, New York City is abuzz with a Valentine’s Day glow that can just give you goose-bumps. The romance is so heavy in the air it’s practically steaming, just like the vapors of the Nuts’4’Nuts cart. Strolling through New York City you can almost hear St.Valentine himself, banging on the lid of a taxi as he crosses 6th avenue, yelling “I’m walking here!” as he scopes out another love-lorn hopeful with his old buddy Cupid. Whether you’ve got a special someone, several special someones, or several special cats there’s only good things about February 14th. There’s no end of things to do in the city – you can take in a Broadway show, go eat a romantically-lit dinner from anywhere in the world or see some hot jazz in a cool club.
If you’re in the mood to cheer on another couple’s real life love-story head over to Times Square. Nine happy couples will be getting married there this Saturday in front of the Times Square Valentine Heart Design winner, “Heartbeat,” by Brooklyn-based outfit Stereotank. This interactive beating-heart drum reacts to sound and movement and it’s pretty impressive (check it out on Bustler here).
Here at Starbright Floral Design, we’re pretty obsessed with Valentine’s Day too. It’s a great time in the shop; the floral coolers are full, most of the staff is smiling on-site and energy levels are high. To kick off the season right, the Starbright designers each created custom heart-shaped arrangements for our V-Day 2015 Heart Collection. These unique arrangements all represent the personalized style of our design team and pack a whole bunch of extra love. We’re also excited to be creating arrangements from the “helpfully” romantic Valentine’s Day Flowers Collection.
Every Valentine’s day serves up it’s own set of unique challenges. Last year, despite a foot of snow, Starbright was able to send out over 2,000 orders for Valentine’s Day. So how did we manage?
Getting Ready For Valentine’s Day
It all starts in the back. After unpacking, washing and shelving A LOT of vases, the guys begin adding greens for storage.

Orange
Orange comes in all sorts of forms here at Starbright Floral Design

The color orange has a special place in Starbright’s design palette even though it is the most contested colors here in the US; people generally have a “love it” or “hate it” reaction to orange. Here at Starbright, we tend to collectively lean towards loving it. And what’s not to love? According to Color Wheel Pro, “Orange represents enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity, determination, attraction, success, encouragement, and stimulation”.
What makes orange so special?
Orange is a vibrant and energetic color that is highly visible to the human eye. It is often used catch attention and highlight important elements of a design. For a similar reason, orange can also be considered a “bargain” color – in floral design, this means orange flowers will make an arrangement feel more present.
The shade of the color is extra important when considering the symbolic associations of orange. Because the color was named for the fruit, orange is often associated with health and vitality. While in a muted tone, burnt or greyed oranges that can be commonly spotted in the color of changing leaves are most often associated with Autumn. Because of the close connection to nature, more subtle shades of orange are often used to represent change, movement, and comfort.
For Encouragement

Are you trying to start a new project? Quit an old habit? Beginning a journey? Orange promotes a positive perspective on life and help to motivate people to look on the bright side of a situation. According to the color symbolism of ancient heraldry, orange represents strength and determination.
Looking for something for someone young? Kids and teens are especially down with the color orange. We’re guessing it might because orange tends to carry a sense of adventure about it.
It’s not always easy to say what you want to say. The color orange is associated with social communication. Studies have shown an increase in two-way conversations while the color orange is present. According to color theorists, “this color is both physically and mentally stimulating which gets people thinking and talking!”

When it comes to boutonnières, this is a pretty common question. Put your worries to rest, Starbright Floral Design will always include pins…whether or not you decide to use them.
At one point, every suit lapel was made with the expectation of wearing a boutonnière. If you happen to have a vintage suit in your closet, take a peek at the underside of the left lapel. You may find a flat loop about one inch below that buttonless buttonhole. This detail made it easy for a man of elegance to slip the stem of a boutonnière flower through the hole and under the loop so that it stayed secure, sans pins. While the extra buttonhole persists as a menswear standard, the boutonnière loop, unfortunately, seems to have faded into the past. Many suits today are designed without the boutonnière loop or an open buttonhole. Not to worry! This is a situation that either your tailor or you, and some YouTube tutorials, can solve in no time.
But don’t feel pressured to try your hand at tailoring in the days leading up to your big event! Boutonnière flowers today are commonly reserved for special occasions; while a single bloom used to be common, now boutonnières generally include at least three or more flowers, some type of greenery, as well as decorative ribbon for stem wrapping. With all that going on, it is not only perfectly acceptable, but also more common, to wear your boutonnière pinned to the outside of your lapel. About the only thing affected by the pins will be your suit.
If the boutonnière wants to be pinned to the jacket let the buttonhole placement guide you. Depending on the size of your arrangement, the bottom of the blooms in your boutonnière should be level with, or not too far below, the extra buttonhole on your left lapel. The tips of the flowers shouldn’t go above the seam where the collar and lapel meet, nor should they be below the extra buttonhole.Basically, if you’ve covered the extra buttonhole – you’re good.

Did you know that red is the most common color used on national flags? Or that red is generally considered to be a good luck color in Asia? Or that red is the traditional color for 40th anniversaries?
What makes red so special?
Red is the color of extremes. It is a warm color with a lot of energy. It is the second most visible color to the eye, though about 8% of the male population cannot see it. Many people think of red as the color of action. To the ancient Greeks, red was the color of super-human heroism. And while we’re certainly not going to knock that association, it’s also worth mentioning the color’s current day connection – romance.
For Someone Special

“As it happens, red is an exquisite ambassador for love, and in more ways than people may realize. Not only is red the color of the blood that flushes the face and swells the pelvis and that one swears one would spill to save the beloved’s prized hide. It is also a fine metaphoric mate for the complexity and contrariness of love. In red we see shades of life, death, fury, shame, courage, anguish, pride and the occasional overuse of exfoliants designed to combat signs of aging. Red is bright and bold and has a big lipsticked mouth, through which it happily speaks out of all sides at once. Yoo-hoo! yodels red, come close, have a look. Stop right there, red amends, one false move and you’re dead.”

Whether your looking to add feelings of warmth and comfort or richness and luxury, red is a favorite of feng shui experts and interior designers alike. Known for increasing appetites, red details are especially great for the kitchen and dinning areas as well as the bedroom. But be careful to use reds in moderation – too much red can be over stimulating and cause restlessness.

Dealing with life can require an extra kick sometimes. If you’re not a big coffee drinker, consider adding a bit of red to the area. Physically, red can cause a bump to your blood pressure, speed up your heart rate, and motivate you to action. Red flowers can also increase the sensitivity of your senses and lend feelings of boldness, courage and action.
If red is your favorite color, you might be a strong person who craves independence. And if you have a particular aversion to the color red, it could mean you tend to be impulsive and could use some calming influences. Mixing reds with teals, blues, and greens (as in the arrangement above from StarbrightNYC) can balance strong red shades enough for even the strongest red-dissenter.

And while the team took a break to chow down on some delicious treats and talked shop. Starbright has a unique studio layout – over 75% of the floor space in the suite is devoted to designing and producing floral arrangements. If you enter the shop and look to the left, all the way down in the back of the shop you’ll see a row of desks – this is where the office staff work, manning the phones. One of the first things you’ll notice is that there isn’t a wall or door or glass window or blind or anything between these two sides of the business. The design and shop staff and the business operations personnel share one space, and one mission – that makes it real easy to come together and let loose, like a big family.
Starbright is known for the flowers, but if you ask anyone who works here what makes the joint special they’ll tell you “it’s the people!” We’re going to break the fourth wall here – we’ve worked with a long list of multi-national businesses and local standouts. Starbright Floral Design is unique on that list because of the incredibly diverse range of experiences, backgrounds and motivations that come together to compose the team. Design isn’t just about making something look nice, or just about pleasing a client on-time and on-budget – design is what happens when someone considers their life story, and funnels those experiences into your life story. And this is Barbara! With over a decade of floral design experience and about six years in this shop, Barbara is another Starbright veteran and a huge part of the team.
Have you attended a party with Starbright flowers recently? Or a wedding? If you have, there’s a big chance Barbara is responsible for the pieces. Barbara’s style can be described as lush – whether it’s modern or traditional, somehow Barbara’s pieces seem richer than the budget would lead you to expect.
But don’t be fooled. This girl’s got edge – check out her great tattoo – but also a huge heart. As a mother of three, Barbara is an expert listener. I don’t know how she does it, but somehow, Barbara always knows just what people are hoping for.
Sokratis recently joined us from Greece, where he and his wife both worked as floral designers. Creating natural looking forms from flowers – Sokratis brings a technique and style all his own. He is known around the shop for his daring composition, utilizing flora in atypical fashions to achieve top flight results.
Viktor? Where’d you go?
Viktor? Where’d you go? Just kidding. Viktor is a little camera shy himself, but that’s not at all the case for the arrangements that he makes!
