Starbright Floral Design at Harvest in the Square

Starbright Floral Design was thrilled to be an official sponsor of the 21st annual Harvest in the Square that took place in Manhattan on September 22, 2016. This year was, as in previous years, a huge success. Harvest in the Square is a fantastic evening when more than 45 food vendors and 12 wineries come together under a beautiful tent in Union Square to provide an unforgettable evening for attendees by giving them a taste of the best of what each of them have to offer.

In addition to showcasing the broad array of culinary masterpieces that Union Square offers, Harvest in the Square also raises funds for the Union Square Partnership. The Union Square Partnership is a community-based nonprofit that is a group of local businesses which have joined together in order to ensure that Union Square in NYC is a beautiful and welcoming space for all who visit. Harvest in the Square is the culminating event of the year and is considered by many to be the preeminent food and wine tasting event in New York City.

A blend of sunflowers, chrysanthemums, wheat and barley moss created a rustic elegance atmosphere for soiree.

Starbright had the distinct honor of decorating the entire venue for Harvest in the Square. We crafted thousands of flowers into centerpieces and decor throughout Union Square Park while staying true to the Harvest theme.

We focused on incorporating sunflowers, wildflowers and other rustic touches to keep in step with the autumnal motif of the evening. Our centerpieces were showcased in wicker baskets and we used calla lilies to add a touch of whimsy and elegance. Starbright was able to incorporate one of our favorite flowers, the orchid, into the arrangements by sourcing incredibly beautiful and unusual orange orchids to make an incredible statement.

Dramatic orange calla lilies were a stunning focal point in the centerpieces.

Starbright also crafted the floral displays for each table at Harvest in the Square. We blended deep violet Licianthus with wild clover and greens to create a subdued display. Our intention was to subtly evoke the theme while letting the attention stay focused on the delicious offerings.

Starbright’s reserved table displays kept the focus on the culinary delights.

Harvest in the Square attracts a large crowd each year and 2016 was no exception. With over 1,200 attendees, we were excited to offer each one a signature Starbright bouquet. Composed of Roses, Gerbera Daisies and Solidago, the attendees were delighted with this unexpected memento from the event that a team of nine designers at the Starbright shop had composed, using over 5,000 fresh blooms.

Julie McGonigle from Starbright oversaw the operations for the event.

The entire team at Starbright Floral Design was delighted to play a part in this year’s Harvest in the Square. Our three designers who were onsite for the event were crafting floral displays the entire day and the feedback we received was that the attendees thought the creations were spectacular.

Having raised over five million dollars since the event’s inception, we take great pride in knowing our contribution will help in maintaining and beautifying one of the great gems of New York City: Union Square Park. We’re already looking forward to next year!

Roses, Roses, Roses: June’s Birth Flower

Roses in NYC are as plentiful as NYC birthdays.  Every year millions of roses are gifted in NYC for any number of occasions.  In June, the appropriate floral gift is the rose as it is June’s birth flower.  Rich in popularity as a symbol of love and romance it hasn’t always been so.   In fact, the rose was first looked upon as a symbol of war.  A civil war that raged on from 1455-1487 between the House of York and the House of Lancaster.   The House of York adopted a white rose, the House of Lancaster was represented by a red rose. The war has been dubbed “The War of the Roses”.  The winner of this war, Tudor Henry VII (The Tudors), merged his Lancastrian rose with the rose of his York bride and thus the creation of the Tudor Rose, the Rose of England.

Roses
Roses, Roses, Roses in NYC

In later years the rose evolved into a form of language creating a secret means of communication between lovers.   In the mid 18th century the wife of the British ambassador in Constantinople described this language in her letters.  Largely due to the publication of her letters after her death, we have the code necessary to decipher the intricate language of roses.  For example if you want to ask your love interest “will you love me?”, send an open white rose.    Want to ask  “Don’t you love me any more?” , send an open yellow rose.      Want to say “I respect and look up to you” then send a bouquet of white roses.   Red roses signify  “forever I Love You”.  However a bouquet of red and white roses state “Together we are one and united”.  Want to declare your attraction to someone but don’t want to go as far as declaring your undying love, then purple roses are the way to go.  Colors alone aren’t enough to deliver the complex messages of love.  In combination with the colors, the number and degree of bloom of the roses have also been assigned meaning.  A dozen roses says  “Be Mine”.   Thirteen roses tells someone we’ll be friends forever.  Three dozen roses expresses “I’m head over heels in love!”.  Six dozen roses or more says “my love for you is limitless”.  In addition to its Victorian assigned message, this last one says “I’m a Starbright Gold club member”!!!.

Regardless of its diverse assigned meanings, the one constant is the rose’s undeniable beauty.  The recipient of a beautiful arrangement of roses is always appreciative.

NYC-Peony Flowers Are Back!

A little known fact of Paul Revere’s famous ride is that it was the second excited shouting ride he had taken.  His first such ride was in late April,  in which he hurriedly rode around town to spread the news: “The Peonies are coming, the peonies are coming, the peonies are coming!”.   The news helped people forget the issues of the day.  New Yorkers rejoice!  Peonies have arrived.  The unmatched beauty and uniqeness of the Peony have inspired NYC floral designers to create some incredibly beautiful flower arrangements.

Perfect Peony in NYC
Perfect Peony in NYC

Peony derives its name from the GreekPaeon; physician of the gods.  If anything can cure the ills of winter it’s the site of a peony flower.  Its majestic blooms of white, pink and red have aptly earned it the nick name “King of Flowers”.

In the language of flowers a display of Peony expresses bashfulness.   The meaning is an oddity considering the flamboyance of the flower.   Any arrangement containing Peonies shouts out “take notice of me!.”

In today’s global community and travel, Peonies are available throughout the year.  However, their vibrancy and quality peak in spring.

Starbright is fortunate to be situated in New York City’s Flower Market making the “King Flower” available to our clientele.  Let Starbright Floral NYC help liberate those spring smiles from the winter blues with Peony flower delivery in NYC.

The Macy’s Flower Show-Thank You To All!

Photo Apr 03, 1 38 53 PMThe anticipation or excitement was building for days.  In the 41 year history of the Macy’s flower show this had only happened twice before, Starbright would be appearing.  Once the news was out, the lines started forming.  Like the Beatles in 1965, Starbright was taking the city and Macy’s by storm.  Our fans, affectionately named “Starbraniacs”, were camped out for days (Macy’s would tell you just under 10 minutes) just for a chance to get a glimpse of our leader and creative inspirator, Nic Faitos.   This impromptu picture was taken of Nic with some lucky fans who finally got the chance to meet the supreme leader.  The fans, never knowing when they would ever get the chance to meet Nic again (Nic would tell you just come on by the store he would love to meet you) nearly fainted from their joy.

Photo Apr 03, 1 08 12 PMOnce the crowd settled down, the floral demonstration began.  This year’s demonstration centered around classic floral designing tools including designing with floral foam.  The picture shows Nic demonstrating  how to properly place a flower stem in floral foam.  In the background you can see Socrates, a Starbright floral artist, preparing a one of a kind bouquet to be given to randomly chosen lucky winner.  The lucky winner was believed to have stated that this was the single most glorious moment in her life.

Macy’s is a mainstay of both New York City and America at large.  We were proud to have been included in their majestic and spectacular floral extravaganza and sincerely thank Macy’s and all the attendees for the opportunity and their support.  We look forward to being asked back in the near future (if the Starbraniacs promise to behave).

Spring flowers are here in NYC.  For 41 years, Macy’s has welcomed spring with their annual Flower Show at their flagship location in Herald Square.  It truly is a New York City event that is not to be missed.    2015’s event is themed, Art in Bloom and is running from March 22 through April 4.    This year Macy’s has added an attraction that can’t be missed.  Sure they will have dramatic showpieces, and breath-taking displays of flowers guaranteed to bring a smile to all, but in addition, Starbright is thrilled to have been asked to present a Macy’s floral seminar for the third time.   Mark your calendars and set aside Friday, April 3 to come visit it us at Macy’s.  This year’s selected topic is classical floral designs with a Starbright spin.

March Flower Files: Daffodils

Daffodils
“Daffodils” by William Warby

NYC Floral enthusiasts rejoice! The beloved daffodil is back in season. Here at Starbright, we’re prepping the stems and getting ready for Spring!

Daffodil Notes /

Daffodils are often considered to be some of the sunniest flowers around; they are among the first wild flowers to appear in Spring and are the official flower of the month of March. They are most commonly found in yellow or white, though orange and pink varieties exist as well. The unique shape of the bloom, with its six petal-like tepals surrounding a trumpet-shaped corona is easy to identify though it is called by many names including: narcissus, jonquil, and daffadowndilly.

Daffodils are native to the Mediterranean. They were initially brought to England by the ancient Romans who believed the blooms had medicinal properties…which is not at all true. The flowers have toxic crystals that can irritate the skin, repel garden pests, and even wilt other flowers in the same vase unless treated properly.

Inside Info /
  • Daffodils are some of the first flowers to bloom; they can actually grow straight through the snow
  • Bring a bundle of daffodils to a friend, but never a single bloom. One daffodil on it’s own predicts misfortune!
  • Daffodils are a symbol of hope and friendship today.

NYC Centerpieces That Won’t Break The Budget

Cymbidium centerpiece
White cymbidium orchid with silver sprayed curly willow

Planning a wedding reception on a budget can be disheartening. But it doesn’t have to be! There are a host of options for couples with refined taste and a restricted budget. One area of the budget that can grow quickly is the tabletop centerpiece. These pieces come in all shapes and varieties and are generally placed at the center of each dinning table. The best centerpieces are designed to coordinate with the rest of the events décor; appropriate centerpieces will help your event’s theme suffuse the space and fill your guests with festive feelings.   Many floral centerpieces are selected for their color, texture, or the time of year. They sometimes include decorative items like colored wire, glass beads, or river stones. The size and shape is also variable and sometimes an event may include a number of sizes to represent the guest’s status; the wedding party and family tables are pretty much always identifiable based on the size of the centerpiece.

Starbright Floral Design suggests following a few simple steps to create a stunning tabletop without breaking the budget.

Consider the size of your container

Think about Goldilocks when selecting the size of the floral container. Too small and the flowers may feel insignificant, too big and the flowers will just get in the way. Not sure what size you need? Ask you florist! Starbright’s design consultants and client satisfaction representatives will help guide you to success. Many styles and concepts can be scaled easily to just the size you’re looking for. One such arrangement from Starbright is Give Me Tomorrow. This arrangement features roses cut to fit and fill a square container.

Rose centerpieces
Cut roses look good in any size container!

Consider the flowers

Centerpieces should mimic the overall floral direction. A great way to maximize the consistency is to select one standout bloom from the arrangements that captures the color and feel of the rest of the floral styling. Some of our favorite blooms for this purpose include cymbidium orchids, calla lilies, and amaryllis.

Or, for the adventurous and openminded, consider the unexpectedness of carnations. For outside weddings with a lot of green, one of our favorite potential centerpieces is this guy:

Green Trick
Green Trick makes for an unexpected twist on the classic centerpiece

Consider the style

Another way to keep your centerpieces elegant, on-theme, and within a budget is to consider modern styles; modern arrangements often have a clean look and fewer blooms than traditionally lush arrangements. These pieces can be soft and romantic…
