The Dahlia…Official Flower of Summertime Fun!

Beautiful Dahlias available for NYC flower delivery
Summer Dahlia Flowers in NYC

Back to school sales are in full swing.  Don’t miss out on Dahlias, Summer’s signature flowers. This spectacular flower comes in a range of colors matched only by the iconic rose.  My favorite is the deep burgundy Dahlia which can appear almost black.  Each color variety, whether it be white, yellow, pink, purple, orange, and red has its fair share of fans. Whether implemented in a wedding, summer party, or something more formal and sophisticated, the dahlia is a sure winner for summer.

Sunflowers: They seem to be popping up all over NYC this Summer

DSC_5324
Sunflowers in NYC-Washington Square Park

As a kid growing up in NYC my mother grew some tremendous sunflowers in the yard.  I used to marvel at their beauty and would often run though the garden surrounded by towering sunflowers.   I remember those days as the care free days of my youth.  My relationship with sunflowers soon soured when one day running through the garden I realized that sunflowers are attractive to bees as well as humans.

Too many years have gone by allowing the sight of sunflowers to generate feelings of  anxiety , pain and a buzzing in my ear.  I set out to make new fond memories of this classic summer flower as part of our Starbright’s flowers in NYC photo shoot.  By arranging to have sunflowers displayed alongside some of my favorite New York City’s famous and not so famous landmarks I have been able to silence the buzzing of those bees.

Fresh Flowers In your Restaurant – Yes You Can Afford Flowers!

V300New York City is filled with choices.  Everything you need or want is within the city limits.  Some would say NYC was Al Gore’s model of what he envisioned the internet to be; endless choices within minutes.  Restaurateurs are keenly aware of the competitiveness of the NYC restaurant market.  In view of this market saturation, the finest restaurants in NYC have long since fused culinary arts and interior design with the art of floral design to deliver a dining experience worthy of the discerning customer’s dollar.

Starbright’s unparalleled service and award winning designers have proudly assisted some of the finest restaurants in New York City in delivering a memorable dining experience.  No matter what the décor, Starbright’s team is able to complement it with floral designs.  Our efforts have led to many accolades from our clientele. We were recently thrilled to be mentioned as the go to florist for the restaurant industry by 4Q Consulting, LLC.  4Q Consulting is a distinguished restaurant consulting company based in NYC.  Such an honorable mention by a recognized authority in the industry is truly high praise.  I’ve included the full text of the 4Q’s blog piece as an informational piece for all our restaurant clientele.  Here it is:

4Q Consulting

Our clients often ask us if they should have fresh flowers in their restaurants and cited their budget as a reason to forgo them.  Fresh flowers that complement your restaurant’s décor and color scheme will instill a warm, welcoming, and hospitable environment. Placing a small, artistically-made arrangement of fresh flowers on each table can raise your diners’ spirits and make them feel welcome, which in turn can help drive repeat business, especially for your local clientele.

The expense of fresh flowers can be mitigated if they are if managed and handled correctly to extend their use.  Here are some tips to manage the cost of your floral arrangements:

Choose Wisely – Choosing hearty flowers that last relatively long will be most cost effective. For example when watered regularly, flowers such as hydrangeas and chrysanthemums can last five to seven days. While other flowers might look pretty, replacing them every two or three days can get costly. Work with your florist to select bunches that will bloom, as these can live for up to two weeks if cared for.

Keep Arrangements Simple and in Line with your Overall Décor – Choosing a suitable vase and flower arrangement will depend on your restaurant’s design and theme. If your budget is limited keep it simple:  a single stem can go a long way.  For instance Cymbidium Orchids come in a variety of colors and can compliment your color palette.

Maintenance – Simple maintenance will help to extend usability. Remove any wilting or discolored flowers as the buds start to blossom.  Add water to the vases every day to ensure a fresh supply of nutrients. When not in use, store the flower arrangements in the fridge.  Work with your florist on how to make your flowers last even longer.  Some florists suggest using a flower preservative or placing two drops of bleach into the water to preserve the petals and to prevent bacteria growth; check with your florist as methods depend on flower type.

Build a Relationship with your Local Florist – Build a rapport with your florist.  When you have a strong working relationship with a vendor they are more likely to work with you on price, advise you of new stock or product and perhaps offer services not normally available (i.e. on-site servicing of arrangements, changing out vases, etc.).  When you have a friendly rapport with your florist, you will receive a higher level of service.  Once this relationship is established, the local florist is much more likely to work with you on payment terms, recommend your restaurant to their clients, and be open to cross marketing and promotions.

Fresh Flowers in your restaurant need not be expensive if done properly and can even help drive business.  Cut fresh flowers can set you apart from your competition, drive repeat business and give you opportunity establish a beneficial vendor partner.

Restaurant Consulting NYC | Managing Safety Risks in your Restaurant | 4Q Consulting, LLC

Restaurants can be dangerous places and accidents can be costly. As an operator, you need to understand the health and safety risks associated with restaurant operations and take appropriate preventive measures to minimize risk and liability.

Every day there are plenty of chances for an employee to become injured on the job: slipping, falling and lifting injuries account for more than 40 percent of serious injuries in a restaurant. Consider additionally a busy kitchen during service, full of sharp implements and open flames, or a frenzied bar area with broken glass. Additionally, a customer may become injured while dining at your restaurant, for example by slipping on a greasy floor or tripping on loose carpeting. It is your responsibility to make safety an integral part of your operational procedures.

Here are 4 ways to help minimize your safety risks:

Define Policies and Procedures – Your employee manual is a perfect tool for laying out your restaurant’s safety policies and procedures on everything from proper equipment use to shoe wear choices. The handbook should contain as many scenarios as possible so that staff members know what to expect from their job, how to execute the job safely, and how to react in case of a crisis. This is an integral part of your business and a great training tool. See our blog: 4 Reasons Why Your Restaurant Needs an Employee Handbook, for more on the importance of Employee Handbooks.

Train Employees Thoroughly – Train new employees in correct procedures and behaviors. Use the Employee Handbook as well as frequent demonstrations to support your training. Training is crucial to keep employees from avoiding behaviors that can risk injury. Safety training should also include Food Handling Safety Training, see our blog: 4 Reasons why it is Vital that All Employees are Trained in Food Safety, detailing the reasons for this training.

Safety Training in the Pre-Service Meetings – As discussed in our previous blog: Are Your Pre-Service Meetings a Waste of Time, use pre-service meetings for on-going training and awareness of safety procedures and behaviors in the restaurant. Having a regular safety topic and daily updates for the entire staff keeps these ideas top of mind; complacency is a recipe for accidents. Continue to educate staff on and keep them aware of the potential hazards of working in the restaurant.

Make Safety Part of Manager Evaluations – When safety is integrated in the evaluation criteria for a restaurant manager’s review, the manager is apt to take safety more seriously and therefore reinforce the procedures in their employees. Reward managers for low occurrences of injuries and illnesses, or for having regular safety meetings. This is also a good way to hold managers accountable for keeping safety a priority. We have had our clients hang posters on the manager’s office door showing how many days the operation has gone without an accident, for all to see.

Minimizing Safety Risks by having written procedures, proper staff training and holding your staff accountable, can help lower your costs associated with Workmen’s Compensation Claims, Insurance Premiums, and possible lawsuits. To be successful, make sure your business model incorporates ways to actively work to keep both your employees and customers safe.

Don’t know where to begin? Ask yourself, do you have the proper written procedures and operational guidelines in place to help you be as profitable as possible? 4Q Consulting can develop customized operational guidelines and training programs to meet your needs. A Client From London Shares His Thoughts About a Starbright Experience…

I woke up this morning and decided to stay home – It is a holiday weekend and there are rarely any opportunities to recharge the gas tank with a little rest and relaxation.  As I often do even when I stay home, I was checking my email and got this really cool note from a client in London.  Just thought I would take a moment to share his words with the whole wide world… Dale really made my day and the day of our entire team…

Featuring a vase of mokara orchids, miniature calla lilies, grasses and bells of Ireland.

“You must email every new customer, so please believe me when I tell you that I planned to write to you in any case.

Today I panicked. I intended to send a pre-wedding gift to a colleague at work who is everso important to me, professionally and personally. But due to vacations and some problems at work, time caught up with me, and I needed to find a gift she would appreciate.

As I live in the UK, I took a risk with your firm. I panicked further when I realised it was a holiday weekend, and people would be leaving work early! But I am very happy I did take a risk. When I telephoned after realising how tight the timing was, you were curteous and helpful. The flowers I ordered were delivered just a couple of hours later, and my colleagues who saw them said they were wonderful.  Thank you for your professionalism, creativity and efficiency. I appreciate it very much, and I could tell it made my friend’s day.

I don’t know if you use testimonials, please feel free to use this one. Thanks again, and have a great holiday weekend,

Dale”

For all of us at Starbright Floral Design, delivering flowers and  “making someone’s day” is a real passion of ours.  When we hear from someone far away (Like Dale from London) that we did great work and that they “loved our flowers” we are just as happy as our clients are!  To everyone that has placed their trust and confidence in Starbright for all their flower and gift-giving requests we are truly grateful.  Thank you to everyone that has helped to put our florist on the map!

The One Year Anniversary of Same Sex Marriage in New York City

The Mayor’s Press Conference. Nic Faitos, Senior Partner at Starbright Floral Design is about to be introduced and will speak about the effect this law has had on local businesses.

On the one-year anniversary of the Marriage Equality Act, Starbright’s senior partner, Nic Faitos, was invited to speak on behalf of New York City’s business community about the Act’s positive impact on the floral business and the city in general. As part of NYC & Company’s participating wedding services, Starbright has had a finger on the pulse of the city’s weddings, which have certainly increased in the past year. A year ago New York joined the other states that endorse same-sex marriage. An increase in the number of marriages occurring in New York means many things. The fact is, the city has felt the recession which has gripped the nation for the past several years, so its leaders cannot help but be enthusiastic about anything which boosts the economy. As an epicenter of the U.S., anything which boosts New York City will hopefully help encourage the national economy as well. New York has attracted many non-residents to marry within our state, which brings in additional revenue. More weddings undoubtedly also mean more work for those who offer goods and services in the wedding industry. But the most important ramification of all is the increase in the amount of joy felt and shared amongst all involved in a wedding.

Every wedding is a happy occasion. Despite the often stressful number of details which go into planning a wedding, when the day itself arrives, there is no bride or groom who isn’t overcome with happiness, smiling ear to ear as their lives are joined with the recognition and blessings of their loved ones. How much more poignant must such a union be for a couple whose relationship could not have publicly been thus consecrated, up until a year ago. The details of such major life events are what add up to give us the feel of the whole, and flowers have always been an integral part of weddings. The more traditional aspects of a marriage that are employed in same-sex marriages, or any marriages, for that matter, the more universal of a declaration those weddings are to their witnesses. Starbright has and will proudly offer our floral design services to all those couples who would like to declare their devotion to each other in front of others, regardless of sexual orientation. We’re just glad the rest of New York can now officially participate.

Flower Power: Making My Job As A NYC Floral Designer A Labor Of Love

I tell all my wedding floral clients time and again that I am honored to be a part of their big day.  It’s likely that they get sick of hearing me repeat it!  However, I am truly being honest.  I find it to be a privilege to work with people on what is undoubtedly the most important day of their lives.  Customers often tell me how much they envy my job and the fact that I am constantly surrounded by beautiful botanicals.  My standard response usually involves complaining about my sore feet, dirty clothes and dry, cracked hands.  In my heart, I know they are right to be envious…  I am a lucky guy.

When a bride sees her bridal bouquet for the first time, and all the months of planning and coordinating the flowers comes to fruition, I take pride in my role.  Sometimes tears, usually a hug and always gratitude are the rewards for my labor.  A bridal bouquet is a painstaking creation that often involves wiring and taping individual blooms.  It is the most personal and the most photographed element of the all the wedding flowers.  Each bride chooses the flowers for her bouquet carefully and most have given it a lot of thought.  Many brides tell me that they have dreamed of carrying a specific bloom.  I get to make their dreams come true!  How cool is that!

Romance and flowers go hand in hand.  Floral designers constantly get to play cupid.  Last Valentine’s Day, Starbright made over a thousand deliveries throughout the city.  That is a lot of love being distributed!  As a designer, I literally create a manifest and tangible representation of a person’s love for another.  Not only can I help a person with the art of seduction but I can help smooth over a lover’s spat or even aide in the celebration of a new life!  Whether it’s an engagement, birth, graduation, promotion, or retirement, flowers are always welcome.  The truth is, when people are at their happiest, flowers are often on hand.

I could go on and on about the joy flowers bring to world.  The colors, the fragrance, the shapes and the textures offer me inspiration and provide our customers with a gift that can help change the course of their days and sometimes lives.  My job is to make people happy using delicate, unique and perishable materials.  The art I am responsible for creating ultimately ends up in the compost heap!  That’s what makes flowers special.  Flowers don’t last forever; they are fleeting.  However, the joy the flowers bring is lasting and the gratitude I receive is palpable.  I truly spend my days doing what I love and that for which I have a passion.  Jealous?  You should be.

This scribe is brought to you by Tom Sebenius.  Tom is Starbright Floral Design’s Creative Director and has been a part of the Starbright team for most of the modern history of our company. Tom has made countless brides happy with his wedding flower designs in NYC and beyond. Tom is our most published contributor to floral industry publications and probably the most reviewed floral stylist on all the major online review sites.  We consistently earn five-star reviews on the likes of Citysearch mainly through Tom’s insistence on quality and attention to detail.  A proud member of our team and a true artist.

NYC Valentine’s Day Roses: A Romantic’s Guide to the Meaning of Roses

NYC and Manhattan residents are renowned lovers of roses.  A NYC Valentine’s Day is a virtual harvest of the world’s rose bushes. Each year there are millions of roses delivered in Manhattan and throughout New York City.   Millions of roses are not enough.  Every year the incredible demand for roses creates a shortage that drives the prices through the moon. The colors of roses sold in NYC are as diverse as Manhattan itself; ranging from the traditional red rose, yellow rose, white rose to the hybrid blue rose, NYC roses  on Valentine’s Day never disappoint.

Singles in Manhattan and NYC have a secret rule book of dos and don’ts of dating decorum that is fervently abided to.  Accordingly Starbright gets many inquiries about the symbolism of roses.

Each Rose color has a different meaning and message:

  • Blue Roses: Unattainable, mysterious.  Message: “Anything is possible”

Combination colors

  • Red and white: unity.  Message: “We stand together”
  • Red and yellow: joy and happy feelings.  Message “You make me happy”
