Behind the Scenes at Starbright

With Starbright Floral Design out and about at events in New York City every day, we wanted to share with our dear friends how the magic is made. Founded 22 years ago in NYC, Starbright started out with the mission to be the greatest florist in the City that Never Sleeps. Over two decades later, we can say with great happiness that we are still chasing that dream every day, and are honored to work with over 200 concierges in Manhattan who heartily recommend us to their guests and clients.

Starbright's beautiful creations.
Starbright’s beautiful creations.

But where do we craft our intricate designs, and who are the elves that create the magic in our New York City flagship shop? We wanted to throw back the curtain and introduce our incredible floral designers, who we think are the best in the business.

Starbright Floral Design has 17 designers working full-time to create lush, floral masterpieces. Our staff of over 70 people ensures that each flower delivery gets to just the right place and is always on time. Our days are busy and overflowing with flowers because we have an average of 250 floral deliveries going out each day in addition to being the florist for an average of 6 events each day. Starbright is having its best year yet and it is also our 22nd year of consecutive growth. We’re thrilled that we get to bedeck Manhattan in flowers and wanted to share what we’ve been up to recently.

Starbright carefully crafts each beautiful bouquet.

The events where Starbright’s floral creations appear vary from black tie galas and fundraisers to celebrating a 111th birthday at the Pierre Hotel. We were delighted to beflower Fashion Week in NYC this year and of course, we love our work as a corporate florist.

One of our upcoming events is for a law firm client who requested that Starbright enhance the United Nations Delegates Dining Room for a private meeting. Later this week we will be collaborating with Macy’s Herald Square in NYC to provide blooms as they start to prepare for the holiday season crush.

While Starbright is delighted to be the florist for incredibly elegant and festive events in Manhattan, one of our priorities is always giving back to our community in New York City. This week we are proud to be a sponsor for the 31st Annual Gala of Answer the Call at Cipriani, which provides assistance to the widows and children of first responders of NYC.

Starbright's team is dedicated to giving back to NYC.

Additionally, we were honored to have been called on by the American Red Cross to fill the Museum of Natural History with flowers for the 2016 Gala, Heroes Among Us.

With so many events and floral masterpieces to create, there’s only one way Starbright could do it all. It’s thanks to our incredible team of floral designers, inspirers, dreamers and doers that we’ve been able to come this far as a firm. And together — who knows what the future may hold. We hope to see you soon at an event that has Starbright’s impeccable blooms!

We hope our blooms brighten your day!

Starbright and the City

At Starbright Floral Design, we stop to smell the flowers every day. Even though we do, we also find our schedule bountiful with events. We wanted to share with our friends and colleagues what we’ve been up to these past few days. Sometime, somewhere, we hope that you are at a special gathering decorated with our amazing blooms and robust accents.

Starbright was delighted to be invited to enhance the beauty that is the Oculus at the World Trade Center, located in lower Manhattan. Our client was Advertising Week and they had the distinct honor of hosting the first ever event at the Santiago Calatrava designed space that is referred to as a “bird in flight”.

Starbright bedecked the Oculus with lush, willowy palm trees.

The event took place at the Grand Staircase of the Oculus in New York City, which was built with white Italian marble. Advertising Week, which brings the best and brightest of the marketing and entertainment fields together for one week in NYC, wanted to highlight the serenity of the space while evoking the fresh and innovative practices that they are known for creating in their industry. As soon as Advertising Week described their vision for the event, we at Starbright Floral Design knew that lush palm trees would the perfect accompaniment to the evening.

The awe-inspiring vaulted ceiling at the Oculus is the focal point that we wanted to enhance.
The awe-inspiring vaulted ceiling at the Oculus is the focal point that we wanted to enhance.

As some of our clients may not know, not only does Starbright Floral Design create custom floral displays in venues across New York City, we are also able to send our carefully curated plants to be rented for an evening, which is what Advertising Week decided to do in this case. We were thrilled to be a small part of this amazing evening in NYC and look forward to being a partner with Advertising Week for future events.

This past week Starbright also had the privilege of beautifying the Baryshnikov Arts Center in Manhattan for their annual gala, the Fall Fete. The Fall Fete was created to raise funds to support performances and residencies at BAC, while also having a magical evening in NYC with those who are passionate about the arts.

Starbright had been requested to create floral accents that would enhance the elegance of the Center’s Ballroom for the sumptuous dinner, without causing difficulty for guests who wanted to converse while they dined. We rose to the challenge by crafting a runner of blooms and greenery that ran the 18-foot length of each table. Composed of an array of fuchsia calla lilies, orchids, orange pincushion protea flowers and purple eucalyptus, the runner was pin-spot lit from above to enhance the display and create an intimate and inviting atmosphere for the private gala.

Verdant greens provided the perfect background emphasize the floral arrangements.

Our dramatic arrangements that accompanied the photo area for the event were created to create a heightened effect that would make an impact, both visually and emotionally, as guests entered the venue. Staying true to the theme of the evening, these displays were made of a blend of fuchsia calla lilies, orchids and orange pincushion protea flowers, with purple eucalyptus and succulents that took guests’ breath away.

These arrangements created an elevated elegance for photography at the step and repeat wall.

For many of our events, we create variations on a floral theme, and the evening at the Baryshnikov Arts Center in Manhattan was no exception. We crafted another floral runner for the bar, where the delicate, soft curve of the calla lily’s petal could be admired up close.

The length of the bar was lined with calla lilies mixed with greens.

We pride ourselves as florists on remembering the smallest details to ensure the biggest impact in our arrangements. That is why, for the dinner at the Baryshnikov Arts Center in NYC, we added tangerine ribbons to our displays in the lavatories to make sure that elegance abounded wherever guests glanced.

The silver countertops provided the perfect foil to our vibrant arrangements.

It was a busy week for us at Starbright Floral Design and indeed, as The Official Florist of the City that Never Sleeps we barely slept! However, we were elated with the result of our collaboration with our clients in New York City, but more importantly, they were thrilled. We’re looking forward to working with them again, and you, soon!

August Birth Flowers in NYC: Gladiolus

Gladiolus

Gladiolus has been dubbed the flower of the Gladiators.   It represents strength of character, sincerity, generosity.  In the Victorian age with its secret language of flowers it was said to represent “love at first sight”. Gladiolus derives its name from the latin word for sword and is sometimes called the sword lily.  As a member of the iris family it contains about 260 species.   Only about 10 are native to Europe the rest are native to southern Africa.  The species vary from very small to the spectacular giant flower spikes you see in floral designs. The flower stalk of the Gladiolus contains an extended row of trumpet-shaped, fragrant flowers, all of which face in one direction. Their colors include pink to reddish or light purple with white, contrasting markings, or white to cream or orange to red.

Once upon a time Gladiolus were viewed as an upscale, highly sought after flower but fell into the sympathy arrangement niche.  However, we’ve recently seen a resurgence of the Gladiolus in NYC.    Many upscale restaurants and hotels in NYC have once again incorporated the Gladiolus in their floral decor.

Secretaries Day Flowers: The law of unintended consequences strikes again!

Flowers for secretaries day in NYC has been a tradition since long before it was a widely recognized holiday in other parts of the country.  Administrative Professionals Day (Secretaries Day) is the day executives recognize the work of secretaries, and other administrative support professionals.  However, these are precisely the people who often are given the task of organizing and keeping the executive’s schedule updated.  Every year at this time, as a by-product of the holiday, these individuals are put in an unenviable predicament.  Marking the calendar can be viewed as self-serving and suggestive.  Not marking the calendar can lead to their bosses’ embarrassment and feverish scrambling. In an effort to help our administrative professional friends and our executives, Starbright has launched an awareness campaign.  This blog as well as our other cyber communication means at our disposal are being applied to ease the burden placed on administrative professionals.

NYC Secretaries day flowers
Secretaries Day Flowers in NYC

equalhappyStarbright’s unofficial sanctioned study has shown that the Administrative  Professionals in NYC who received flowers were happier than the Administrative Professionals who received nothing.

Administrative Professionals Day (Secretaries Day) is observed on the Wednesday of the last full week of April, this year the day is April 22.  National Secretaries Week was created in 1952 through the efforts of Harry F. Klemfuss, a New York publicist and honorary member of the Florist hall of fame (second part- kidding).  In 1955, the observance date of National Secretaries Week was moved to the last full week of April. The name was changed to Professional Secretaries Week in 1981, and became Administrative Professionals Week in 2000.

The secret language of flowers was created in Victorian times when etiquette was prohibitive of voicing one’s emotions.  Accordingly flowers were given hidden meanings.  Floral gifts given to administrative professionals on April 22 contain no hidden meaning.  The message is loud and clear and for all the office to see: “Thank You!”

It is that time of the year to celebrate and express our appreciation to those who do so much all year-long to keep the wheels of commerce  moving.  Assistants of all stripes have saved companies, increased revenue, prevented recessions and even kept those that they report looking great and making sure  that personal and department performance is at it is peak.  All of us at Starbright Floral Design are standing ready all week to help you express the appreciation that is so well deserved.

Taking Care of Your Phalaenopsis

Purple Orchids
Triple Orchid Delight

Looking for a new floral friend? It might be time to reconsider an orchid. Trust us – they’re lower maintenance than you might have heard. Beginning table top gardeners should consider beginning with a Phalaenopsis Orchid – pronounced fayl-eh-NOP-sis.  Phals are among the easiest to care for and will reward your attentions with several months of blooms.

6 Things to Know About Caring for Your Phalaenopsis Orchid

Where to place it…

Phalaenopsis Orchids originated in the jungles of South, Southeast, and East Asia. They naturally thrive in hot climates, but under a canopy of leafy shade.

1. Phals need light, but don’t like direct sunlight.

In order to keep your Phal comfy, keep it out of direct sunlight, but near a bright window.  Why? Direct sunlight is like the kiss-of-death for these delicate jungle plants. When exposed to high levels of light, the succulent like leaves can burn, or even scorch. Damage to the leaves will inhibit healthy growth by messing with how the plant takes in it’s nutrients.

2. Phals like to stay warm.

Phals can live in temperatures from roughly 59-86 degrees Fahrenheit. The plant generally puts out a new bloom spike in autumn and flowers through winter. If the temperature is irregular and fluctuates often (drafty windows, maybe) the plant may suffer bud drop – new blooms that fall off before opening.

What to give it…

3. Phals need water…sometimes

Phals are not very thirsty and enjoy humidity more than lots of water. A good rule of thumb is to only water your orchid when it’s potting mixture feels almost dry. Be very careful to avoid overwatering your plants as this can cause the roots to rot. The frequency of your Phal’s water needs will depend on the planting medium, the amount of light it gets and the temperature it is in. A couple things that will help you determine this :

– A bark potting material retains less water than a moss mixture.

– Heat will dry out your Phal faster than cooler temperatures.

–  The more light your Phal gets, the more quickly it will dry out.

It is also good to remember :

 – Hold the fancy waters – Phals want to drink tepid tap water.

 – Water your orchids in the morning.

 – Remove any excess water that remains on the leaves or crown (where the leaves met the stem) gently with cotton balls or a tissue – pat them dry gently to avoid rot which could kill your Phal.

– Drainage is really important to your orchid’s health. Standing water at the base of the plant has downright dastardly effects. Starbright Floral Design does our best to help you out by incorporating a drainage layer of river rocks into the bottom of our glass planters.

It will take a minute to perfect this. In the meantime, orchids generally need to be watered about once a week in the temperate months – more if it’s hot, less if it’s cold. After a couple waterings you should have the feel of when and how much your plant needs. And the very best rule of thumb – if you aren’t sure if it’s time to water, wait a day.

4. Phals like food…sometimes

Orchids aren’t big eaters either. When selecting a fertilizer, go for a balanced orchid mix. Then, when feeding your orchid, dilute the recommended amount by half. Phals don’t want or need a full dose of the mix and excess fertilizer can build up as solid salts in the potting mix. Feeding your orchid a diluted solution once a week or every two weeks is ok year-round. But make sure to water your plant with clean tap water at least once a month to help break up any buildup that has been left behind.  It is also ok to use a bloom booster in autumn to encourage flower growth.

What happens next…

5. Phals get sick too

If you begin to see streaks of white in the fleshy leaves of your Phal, that means your floral friend is stressed out – yeah, they get stressed too. These white streaks often indicate issues with watering or light. Black blisters are a little more ominous – if you see these, reduce watering to dry the plant and isolate the affected orchid to avoid spreading the pests to any other nearby orchids. Black honey mold  can also build up on the leaves. This mold is dull, black and mossy. It can be wiped off with water and a small amount of mild detergent and won’t leave lasting damage.

6. Phals need to be trimmed

After your Phalaenopsis has bloomed, if the leaves are strong and healthy – you can cut the stem above bottom two nodes. Nodes are the little brown lines on the stem below the bloom spike where the flowers are. This, coupled with cooler temperatures at night, will initiate and generally produce another bloom spike with flowers within eight to twelve weeks. If the leaves are not healthy, the stem down to the level of the leaves and the plant will bloom with larger flowers and a strong stem within a year.

And that’s it! That’s all you need to maintain a healthy orchid plant.

Don’t worry, if this sounds like a lot of work, Starbright Floral Design offers a special orchid service to help you have a healthy plant year-round.

Color Profile : Green

Ever wonder where flowers got their “meanings”?

Color psychologist don’t. And they have loads of studies backing up their theories. The general model of color psychology relies on six basic principles:

  1. Color can carry specific meaning.
  2. Color meaning is either based in learned meaning or biologically innate meaning.
  3. The perception of a color causes evaluation automatically by the person perceiving.
  4. The evaluation process forces color motivated behavior.
  5. Color usually exerts its influence automatically.
  6. Color meaning and effect has to do with context as well.[1]

Over at Starbright Floral Design, we get to work with lots of colors everyday and all of us have our favorites. But why are they our favorites and what does that say? Up this week, Marcela’s favorite :

Green

Green Anthurium
Green Anthurium

Green is the prime color of the world, and that from which its loveliness arises.” – Pedro Calderon de la Barca

What makes green so special?
Green is the easiest color for the eye to see and therefore considered balanced.  Environments are significantly enhanced by the presence of plenty of green.  On a primitive level, greenery reminds us of water and growth, and is associated by color psychologists with good-taste and a sense of security. Psysiologically, green helps balance emotions and creates a sense of calm. Consider a pair of green tinted shades – one study found that reading through a green tinted transparent sheet increased participants speed and comprehension!
For the Home
Give us a call to talk about bringing living greens into your space – we offer select seasonal varieties of . Green is a cool color and has a calming effect. Green is also a reassuring color. In the presence of greenery, people are subconsciously reminded of the presence of water – or the absence of famine.

For the Teacher

Starbright Floral Design’s succulent gardens are a low maintenance solution for a busy teacher. And worth your while as well! A study at The Royal College of Agriculture in Circencester, England, found that students demonstrate 70 percent greater attentiveness when they’re taught in rooms containing plants. The same study reported that classrooms with plants reported higher attendance than those without plants.  This effect carried over into a study that showed that students were more likely to join and continue to participate in after school programs and activities that took place outdoors or had greenery present.

Yellow

Starbright floral design yellowHow wonderful yellow is. It stands for the sun. -Vincent Van Gogh

Yellow is most often associated with happiness and competence. Due to the amount of light that is reflected, yellow is the most visible color of the spectrum. Because it is so easy to see, yellow is more attention-getting than other colors. It also stimulates stronger reactions in people than most other colors.

To an office

A little yellow in an office goes a long way.  Physiologically, yellow stimulates mental activity.  It can help to increase the speed of analytical processes and logical reasoning.

To support and encourage

A bouquet of yellow flowers can increase the recipients energy, confidence, and happiness level. Bright yellows also relate an optimistic outlook, while pale yellows may be better for also communicating sympathy.

To congratulate

Help aim the spotlight and say “well done!” with an arrangement that calls attention to the recipient.

Scent and Memory – There’s More to it Than You “Think”.

Pink Peonys

It has been proven that our sense of smell is an incredibly powerful tool for invoking memories. There have been several studies that have shown a clear link between smells and the recollection of emotional memories, and these studies were looked at together in a paper from the Oxford journal Chemical Senses. To summarize the studies they look at, the authors state:

“From these data, there is at least preliminary evidence that olfactory stimuli can cue autobiographical memories more effectively than cues from other sensory modalities. Explanations for these effects can be invoked from accepted principles in contemporary cognitive psychology.”

What’s more, the link between smell and memory goes beyond nostalgia. In another study published in the journal Science and reported on in the New York Times, researchers discovered that exposing people to scents as they studied and later, while they slept, helped them recall details better the next day. This points to the possibility that smells can not only bring back memories from long ago, but that they can help us retain information in the short term. According to the Times the “Olfactory sensing pathways in the brain lead more directly to the hippocampus than do visual and auditory ones.”

smell

The hippocampus is a little area curled deep in our brains.  This area is a “convergence point for information arriving from all over the rest of the cortex. Neuroscientists have identified the hippocampus as crucial for creating new memories for events.”  Because of the olfactory bulb’s proximity to this memory generation and storage center, biology supports that the two, scent and memory are closely linked.

For an employer, this information speaks highly to the benefits of having aromatic flowers in the workplace. Based on everything we know about scent and memory, flowers in a work environment could not only make employees recall pleasant memories from the past, improving morale, but they could help workers retain information they learn in the short term. Aromatic flowers are an easy, natural way to make your workplace a happier, more productive environment.

Now that spring is fully in bloom, Starbright has many aromatic options available as part of our Weekly Flowers subscription service. Here are some beautiful springtime smellies that will brighten up your office and bring a smile to the face of anyone who gets a whiff of them:

Peony
Peony

Peonies are one of our favorites right now. Our beautiful Pink Peony Perfection bouquet will give your workplace a lovely rosy, citrusy scent that will enliven anyone and bring back memories of perfect May mornings. Or there’s our vibrant So Stylish bouquet, which pairs those fragrant peonies with pink roses and lilies, purple orchids, green hydrangea, and more.

Lilac

With a thick smell that’s equal parts rose, vanilla, and almond, lilacs leave a lasting impression on everyone who has had the pleasure to be entranced by them. One of our most fragrant bouquets, Aromatic Spring Amore, features purple lilacs along with white amaryllis, green viburnum, hot pink garden roses, and pink ranunculus. With this collection, spring will truly be in the air in any workspace.

Sweet peas

With a sensuous smell that is used often in perfumes, this floral carries a sweet springtime aroma.  Sweet pea pairs wonderfully with other aromatics like roses, lilies, and stock, and this Isn’t It Romantic bouquet will make every day at your office feel special.

Starbright Flower File
Freesia

Freesias smell is sweet and light, while also being strong. Native to South Africa, these lovelies will only grow more pleasantly fragrant as spring warms up and moves into summer. White freesia gives some of the strongest smells, and in our Spring Rapture bouquet, these light bulbs are bundled with pink cymbidium orchid blooms, pink tulips and pink hydrangea, making for a bright reminder of perfect picnics or that great smell of the soap at your grandmother’s home.

Stock

Stock have a wonderful sweet, almost clove-like scent that will travel throughout any space and awaken the senses with thoughts of a dewy field. This bouquet, full of hot pink stock along with lavender roses, purple tulips, hot pink mokara orchids, truly lives up to its name—it’s full of life, and great for a workplace.

Starbright’s Weekly Flowers subscription service is a sure bet for making your space happier, healthier, and more productive. Whether these aromatics bring back long forgotten memories, jog something from yesterday’s meeting prep, or just provide a spot of life for the surroundings, fresh flowers will make your workplace an environment in which people want to spend time.

Got the morning grumps? Let flowers turn your frown upside down.

It’s cold, it’s dark, and a single digit number glows back on the alarm as ear-piercing beeps cut the silence.

A full ten percent of the population actually enjoy this experience. For the other 90 percent, a mandatory 7:00am alarm is less than desirable.

Society, work, or familial pressures keep us bouncing – very few people have the luxury of  subscribing to their preferred sleeping patterns. In fact, instead of maintaining a natural sleep schedule, many people stay awake later and wake up earlier than their body would like.

What do we get for pulling extra hours? In a study of young employees, lower amounts of sleep caused an increase in tension, nervousness, and irritability. These symptoms were especially present in the morning hours and tended to naturally wear off as the day progressed.

Good news for the habitually groggy!

“The morning blahs, it turns out, is a real phenomenon, with positive moods — happiness, friendliness, and warmth for example — manifesting much later in the day,” says lead researcher Nancy Etcoff, Ph.D. Doctor Etcoff is referring to her research that confirms

“flowers might be the perfect pick-me-up for millions of Americans who do not consider themselves “morning people.”

-Nancy Etcoff, PH.D.

The study, done at Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital studied the effects of flowers on the emotions of participants. These participants noted that they generally felt least positive in the morning but reported being happier and more energetic after looking at flowers first thing in the morning.

Doctor Etcoff continues “By starting the day in a more positive mood, you are likely to transfer those happier feelings to others — it’s called a mood contagion.” We’re thinking of it as an emotional domino effect and it’s wild – check out more info on the Wikipedia page. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emotional_contagion

The best part? Flowers don’t discriminate – the positive effects work for women, men, and even children and adolescents.

Want to try it out? Our reading suggest that the effects are strongest when flowers are located in communal areas or in the immediate surroundings.  Some ideas from starbrightnyc.com :

Marcela
From Starbright’s table to yours

For the bedroom :

Try a posy of something sweet and aromatic. Lilies, lilacs, stock, sweet peas, and freesia are examples of scented flowers to look for.

For the kitchen :

Whether in a home or an office, families and friends tend to come together in kitchen spaces – try something bigger and brighter for this room.  We also love simple and colorful.  A bundle of tulips maybe?

For the desk :

Something elegant, contained, and unlikely to spill might be best.  Check out these callas as an option or these orchids.

For the office :

When you’ve got a bit more space, a flowering orchid plant will help keep you company. While white orchids are always elegant, this purple Phaleonopsis orchid is a great way to include Pantone’s 2014 Color of the Year – Radiant Orchid in your space.

With Starbright’s subscription service, you can have seasonal flowers in your home or office fresh weekly.  Give us a call to find out more.
